Do furloughed employees get unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
My company just announced mandatory furloughs starting next month - we'll be working reduced hours (only 2 days per week instead of 5). I've never dealt with this before and honestly don't know if I can even apply for unemployment since I'm technically still employed? Has anyone been through a furlough situation with Washington ESD? Do they consider this temporary layoff eligible for UI benefits? I'm really worried about making rent with such reduced income.

Yes, you can absolutely file for partial unemployment benefits during a furlough! Washington ESD treats furloughs as temporary layoffs. You'll file a regular UI claim and report your reduced earnings each week when you do your weekly claim certification.

•Oh wow, that's a relief! Do I need any special documentation from my employer or just file like normal?

•Just file normally through the Washington ESD website. Your employer will get notified automatically and they'll verify the furlough details.

Same thing happened to me last year during the slow season at my job. Filed for partial UI and it helped a lot. Just make sure you report ALL income from your reduced work days - Washington ESD will calculate the partial benefit amount based on what you earn vs what you used to make.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm hoping it's faster than regular unemployment claims.

•Took about 2 weeks for me, which was pretty standard. The key is being accurate about your work schedule changes.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your furlough situation, I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours!

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me so much frustration.

wait i thought you had to be completely unemployed to get UI benefits?? this is confusing

•Nope! Washington ESD offers partial unemployment benefits for people with reduced hours. It's designed exactly for situations like furloughs or when your employer cuts your schedule.

•oh that makes sense. wish i knew this when my hours got cut last summer

The Washington ESD system is actually pretty good about handling furlough situations. You'll want to keep detailed records of your work schedule changes though. They may ask for documentation during the adjudication process, especially if there are any questions about your reduced hours.

•What kind of documentation should I keep? Just my pay stubs or something more detailed?

QuantumQueen
•Pay stubs are good, but also keep any written communication from your employer about the furlough - emails, memos, official notices. Anything that shows the reduction was employer-initiated.

Been through this twice now with different companies. The partial UI definitely helps bridge the gap, but just know that you'll still need to do the job search requirements unless you have a definite return-to-work date. Make sure you understand what Washington ESD expects for your weekly job contacts.

•Oh right, I forgot about job search requirements! Do I still have to look for other jobs even though I'm just furloughed?
0 coins
Aisha Rahman
•Yes, unless your employer gives Washington ESD a specific recall date. If it's indefinite furlough, you'll need to do the standard 3 job search activities per week.

Zara Khan
•Actually, if you're on standby status (meaning you have a definite return date), you might be exempt from job search. Check with Washington ESD about your specific situation.

This is exactly what I needed to hear! My restaurant cut everyone's hours in half starting next week and I was panicking about money. Going to file my claim this weekend.

•Good plan! File as soon as your hours are reduced. Don't wait - you want to get the process started right away.

One thing to watch out for - if your employer calls the furlough 'temporary' but doesn't give you a specific return date, Washington ESD might treat it like a regular layoff. This could affect your job search requirements and how long you can collect benefits.

Anastasia Popov
•Our HR said it's temporary but didn't give exact dates, just 'until business picks up.' Should I be worried?
0 coins
Ethan Wilson
•Not worried, just prepared. Washington ESD will likely require job search activities in that case. It's still better than no income at all.

ugh the Washington ESD phone system is impossible to get through to. spent 3 hours yesterday trying to talk to someone about my furlough situation and kept getting hung up on

Luca Ferrari
•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - they handle all that phone nonsense for you. Worth checking out if you're getting frustrated with the calling process.

•might have to try that. this is ridiculous that it's so hard to get basic information

Quick question - does the partial unemployment amount change based on how many days you work? Like if I go from 5 days to 3 days vs 5 days to 1 day?
0 coins
QuantumQueen
•Yes, it's calculated based on your earnings vs your previous full-time earnings. The less you make during the week, the higher your partial benefit amount (up to your maximum weekly benefit amount).

Carmen Flores
•That makes sense. So it's not just a flat rate for everyone.

FINALLY someone asking the right questions! I've been wondering about this for months. My company keeps threatening furloughs and I had no idea we could get partial benefits. This thread is super helpful.

•Glad it's helping! Too many people don't know about partial unemployment benefits. It's there specifically for situations like this.

Word of caution though - make sure your employer is actually calling it a furlough and not just a schedule reduction. The terminology matters to Washington ESD and can affect how they process your claim.

Anastasia Popov
•How can I tell the difference? Our manager just said 'reduced hours due to business conditions.

CyberSamurai
•That sounds like it would qualify. The key is that it's employer-initiated and temporary. Get it in writing if possible.

I tried to file for partial UI during my furlough last year but got denied initially. Had to appeal and it took forever. Make sure all your paperwork is perfect from the start.

•What went wrong with your initial application? Want to make sure I don't make the same mistake.

•I didn't report my reduced earnings correctly on my weekly claims. Washington ESD thought I was working full time and collecting benefits fraudulently.

Zara Khan
•Yikes, that's scary. Good reminder to be super careful with the weekly reporting.

Does anyone know if you can collect partial UI indefinitely during a furlough or is there a time limit?
0 coins
QuantumQueen
•Same time limits as regular unemployment - usually 26 weeks maximum in Washington, though it can vary based on your benefit year and economic conditions.

•Good to know. Hopefully our furlough doesn't last that long!

This thread convinced me to try that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Just used it yesterday and actually got through to a Washington ESD agent within 20 minutes instead of wasting my whole day calling. They confirmed my furlough situation qualifies for partial benefits.

•Really? That actually worked? I'm definitely trying it next week.

•Yeah, I was skeptical too but it really does work. Way less stressful than the regular calling process.

remember you still have to be able and available for work even on partial UI. so if your employer gives you weird shift times that conflict with other potential jobs, that could be an issue

Anastasia Popov
•Our furlough schedule is pretty flexible - we choose which 2 days to work. Should be fine then?

Liam O'Donnell
•sounds like it should be okay since you have control over the schedule

Just want to add that your partial unemployment benefits are still taxable income. Don't forget to either have taxes withheld or set money aside for tax season!
0 coins
Anastasia Popov
•Good point! I always forget about the tax implications. Can you have taxes taken out automatically?
0 coins
Amara Nwosu
•Yes, you can elect to have 10% withheld for federal taxes when you file your weekly claims. Definitely recommend it.

anyone else notice that partial UI claims seem to get processed faster than regular unemployment claims? mine got approved in like 10 days

Zara Khan
•I think it's because there's less chance of fraud with partial claims - you're still working so Washington ESD can verify everything easier.

•that makes sense. plus the employer is still involved so there's more documentation

One last tip - if you get called back from furlough early, make sure to stop filing weekly claims immediately. Washington ESD gets really picky about people who continue claiming after returning to full-time work.

Anastasia Popov
•How do I officially stop the claims? Just stop filing the weekly reports?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Farsi
•You can call Washington ESD to close your claim officially, or just stop filing. But calling is safer to avoid any confusion later.

•And if you need to call Washington ESD to close your claim, that's another good use case for Claimyr - much easier than trying to get through on your own.

Just wanted to share my experience from last year - I was furloughed for 3 months and partial UI was a lifesaver. One thing I learned the hard way is to keep VERY detailed records of your work schedule changes. Washington ESD asked me to provide documentation about 6 weeks into my claim, and having everything organized (pay stubs, emails from HR, my work calendar) made the process smooth. Also, don't stress too much about the job search requirements if you have a definite return date - my employer provided that info to ESD and I was exempt. The whole process was way less scary than I expected!

•This is so reassuring to hear from someone who actually went through it! I was definitely overthinking how complicated it would be. The documentation tip is really helpful - I'm going to start organizing everything now before I even file. Did you have any issues with the weekly reporting process, or was it pretty straightforward once you got into the routine?
