How much is unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about my weekly amount
I just got approved for unemployment after being laid off from my warehouse job last month. My weekly benefit amount shows $362 but I'm not sure if this is correct? I was making about $18/hour working 40 hours a week before I got let go. Is there a way to calculate what my Washington ESD benefits should be? I tried looking at their website but it's confusing with all the quarters and base period stuff. Has anyone else gotten around this amount?

The weekly benefit amount is calculated using your highest earning quarter from your base period. If you were making $18/hour for 40 hours that's $720/week or about $2880/month. Washington ESD uses a formula where your weekly benefit is roughly 3.85% of your total base period earnings divided by 52, but it can't exceed $999/week in 2025.

•Thanks! That helps explain it. I was working for about 8 months before getting laid off so maybe that's why it's not higher.

•Wait I thought the max was like $800 something? Did it go up this year?

Your amount sounds about right for part-time or newer employment. The calculation looks at your four highest-earning quarters in your base period (which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed). If you only worked 8 months, some of those quarters might have been zero or low earnings.

•That makes sense. I started the job in March last year so I probably don't have a full year of earnings in the base period.

•This is so confusing, why can't they just tell us how they calculated it??

I had a similar situation and couldn't get through to Washington ESD to ask about my benefit calculation. Ended up using Claimyr to actually reach someone who could explain it. They have this service where they'll call and wait on hold for you - saw it on their demo video https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. The agent was able to break down exactly how they got my weekly amount.

•How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money waiting for my first payment.

•It's worth checking out their site claimyr.com - they focus on getting you connected rather than charging crazy fees. Way better than spending hours on hold.

•Never heard of this but honestly anything beats calling Washington ESD directly. Last time I tried I was on hold for 3 hours and got disconnected.

The maximum weekly benefit amount for 2025 is $999 but most people don't get that unless they were making really good money. Your $362 sounds normal for warehouse work especially if you haven't been working there super long.

•Good to know I'm not getting shortchanged then. Just wanted to make sure.

•Yeah I got $410 when I was laid off from my restaurant job, seems like they're pretty consistent with their calculations.

ugh the whole system is ridiculous. they make it so complicated to figure out what you should get and then half the time the amounts are wrong anyway. ive been fighting with them for weeks about my calculation

•If you think there's an error you can appeal the monetary determination. You have 30 days from when they mailed it to you.

Javier Garcia
•already did that, waiting to hear back. probably take another month knowing how slow they are

•Appeals usually take 4-6 weeks but sometimes longer if they need to review employment records.

I think there's also a minimum amount you have to have earned to even qualify. Like you need at least $3,000 in your highest quarter or something? Not sure of the exact number but might be why some people get lower amounts.

Keisha Williams
•Yes, there are minimum earning requirements. You need at least $3,800 in your highest quarter and total base period earnings of at least 1.5 times your high quarter amount.

Connor Byrne
•I definitely earned more than that so I should be good. Thanks for the info everyone!

Just want to point out that your benefit amount also affects how much you can earn from part-time work. You can usually earn up to 1/3 of your weekly benefit before they start reducing your payment.
0 coins
Connor Byrne
•That's good to know! So I could make about $120 a week from odd jobs without affecting my benefits?
0 coins
Isabella Silva
•Right, but you still have to report ALL earnings on your weekly claim, even if it's under the threshold.

•And make sure you're still doing your job search activities! They're pretty strict about that.

The thing that sucks is the benefits are taxable too. So that $362 isn't what you actually get to keep after taxes.

Connor Byrne
•Wait, really? They tax unemployment benefits?
0 coins
CosmosCaptain
•Yep, it's considered income. You can have taxes withheld automatically or pay them when you file your return.

•I always have them withhold 10% just so I don't owe a huge amount at tax time.

Does anyone know if the amount changes based on how many dependents you have? I have two kids and wondering if that affects anything.
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•Washington doesn't add extra money for dependents like some other states do. Your benefit amount is just based on your earnings history.

•Bummer, that would have helped a lot with daycare costs while I'm job hunting.

I had issues with my benefit calculation too and tried calling Washington ESD for weeks. Finally used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and they got me through to an actual person who could review my case. Turns out they had missed some of my earnings from a previous job.

•How long did it take them to fix it once you got through?

Chloe Wilson
•About 2 weeks to get the corrected amount. They had to verify my earnings with my old employer but it was pretty straightforward once I actually talked to someone.

Just remember your benefits will last up to 26 weeks in most cases, so if you're getting $362/week that's about $9,400 total. Not a lot but hopefully enough to tide you over while job searching.

been getting unemployment for 12 weeks now and honestly the amount barely covers rent let alone everything else. hoping something opens up soon

One thing to watch out for - if you get any severance pay or vacation payout, that might delay when your benefits start. Washington ESD considers that wages even though you're not working.
0 coins
Connor Byrne
•I didn't get any severance, they just laid us all off with one week notice. Pretty crappy way to handle it.

Luca Greco
•That sucks but at least it means your benefits should start right away without any delays.

Quick question - do you have to pay back unemployment if you find a job quickly? I'm worried about getting benefits and then starting work next week.
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•No, you don't have to pay back legitimate benefits you received while unemployed. Just stop filing weekly claims once you start working again.

Nia Thompson
•Thanks! I was worried there might be some penalty for not using all the weeks.

The hardest part for me was proving I was laid off and not fired for cause. Had to get documentation from HR and everything. Make sure you have all that stuff ready when you apply.
0 coins
Connor Byrne
•Yeah they sent me a separation notice form to fill out. Luckily it was clearly a layoff due to 'lack of work' so shouldn't be an issue.

Anyone else find it weird that they base it on old earnings instead of your most recent pay? I got a raise 3 months before being laid off but my benefits are based on when I was making less money.
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•That's because of the base period lag. They use completed quarters to make sure the earnings are verified. It's frustrating but prevents fraud.

GalacticGladiator
•Makes sense I guess, just seems unfair when you were actually making more money right before losing your job.

At least Washington's benefits are decent compared to some states. My cousin in another state only gets like $240/week max.

•Wow that's terrible. I guess $362 isn't so bad in comparison.

Just wanted to add that if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD about your benefit amount or any other questions, I've had good luck with Claimyr recently. They handle the calling and waiting so you don't have to spend your whole day on hold. Check out claimyr.com if you're interested.

Hope this helps! Your $362 sounds totally normal for your situation. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims on time and do your job search activities. The system works pretty well once you get used to it.
