How many weeks work to get unemployment benefits in Washington?
I've been working part-time jobs for the past year and just lost my main gig. I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits but I'm confused about the work requirements. How many weeks do you need to work to get unemployment in Washington? I've worked about 8 months total but it wasn't all consecutive - had some gaps between jobs. Does that matter? Really need to know if I should even bother applying.

In Washington, you need to have worked in at least two of the last five quarters (base period) and earned a minimum amount. It's not about weeks specifically - it's about quarters and earnings. You need at least $1,005 in your highest quarter and total earnings of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter amount.

•Oh wow, I had no idea it was based on quarters! That makes more sense. I think I worked in 3 of the last 5 quarters so I should be good on that part.

•yeah the quarter thing trips up a lot of people, I thought it was just about having a job for X weeks too

The gaps between jobs don't matter as long as you meet the earnings requirements in your base period. Washington ESD looks at the first four of the last five completed quarters when you file. So if you file in January 2025, they'd look at Oct 2023 - Sept 2024.

•That's a relief about the gaps not mattering! I was really worried about that.

•Wait, so if I file in February, they look at different quarters? This is confusing...

Amelia Dietrich
•Exactly - the base period shifts depending on when you file. It's always the first four of the last five completed quarters.

I tried calling Washington ESD to get clarification on my work history but their phone lines are impossible! Been trying for weeks. Anyone know a better way to reach them?

•I actually found a service called Claimyr that helps get through to Washington ESD agents. They handle the calling for you - check out claimyr.com. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of waiting on hold.

•Oh interesting, I'll check that out. Getting through to someone who can actually look at my account would be huge.

This is all so confusing! I worked 30 hours a week for 6 months, then got laid off. Do I qualify or not? I'm freaking out because I need to pay rent next month and I don't know if I should apply or look for another job first.

•30 hours a week for 6 months sounds like you'd definitely meet the earnings requirement. You should apply! The worst they can say is no, and you won't know until you try.

•Definitely apply. Even if you start looking for work immediately, you can still collect benefits while job searching. That's literally what unemployment is for.

•Ok you're right, I'm going to apply today. Thanks for the encouragement!

just to add - if you don't qualify under the regular base period, Washington ESD will automatically check your alternate base period (the last four completed quarters). so you might still qualify even if the first calculation doesn't work out

•What's the difference between regular and alternate base period?
0 coins
KhalilStar
•regular is first 4 of last 5 quarters, alternate is the most recent 4 completed quarters. alternate base period can help if you had more recent work

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator that can give you an estimate if you know your quarterly earnings. Might be worth checking before you apply.

•Good idea! I'll look for that calculator. Do you remember where on the site it is?

•It's under the 'Before You Apply' section I think. Pretty straightforward to use.

UGH the whole system is so complicated! Why can't they just say 'work X weeks, get benefits'? All this quarter stuff is ridiculous.

Amelia Dietrich
•I get the frustration, but the quarter system actually makes sense because it ensures people have substantial work history, not just a few weeks here and there.

•I guess that makes sense... still annoying though when you're stressed about money and trying to figure out if you qualify

Been there! I applied not knowing if I qualified and got approved. The application process will tell you if you meet the requirements - no point in guessing.

•How long did it take to find out if you were approved?

Madison King
•About a week for the initial determination. Then had to do the job search stuff but that's standard.

Don't forget you also need to be able and available to work, and actively seeking work. The earnings requirement is just part of it.

Lucy Taylor
•Yeah I'm definitely able and available! Just need to know I can afford to take time to find the right job instead of grabbing the first thing I see.

•That's exactly what unemployment is for - giving you time to find appropriate work instead of just any work

I had a similar situation last year - worked irregular schedule but in multiple quarters. Still got approved. The key is having enough total earnings, not necessarily consistent work.

Lucy Taylor
•That's encouraging! I think my total earnings should be enough, just wasn't sure about the irregular schedule part.

William Schwarz
•Yeah irregular is fine as long as you hit the minimums. I was worried about the same thing.

Quick tip - when you apply, have your employment history ready with dates and employer info. Makes the process much smoother.

Lucy Taylor
•Good point! I'll gather all that info before I start the application.

Also remember that if you're denied initially, you can appeal. Sometimes the first review misses things or there are issues with how employers reported your wages.

•Good to know there's an appeal process if needed. Hopefully it won't come to that though!

The Washington ESD customer service is actually pretty helpful once you get through to them. I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it worked great - got connected to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of waiting hours.

•Yeah I tried Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here and finally got to talk to someone! They confirmed I qualify and helped me understand the process.

•Nice! It's such a relief when you can actually talk to a real person who can look at your specific situation.

just apply already! worst case scenario they say no and you're in the same position you're in now. best case you get benefits while job hunting

One more thing - if you do qualify, make sure you understand the weekly claim requirements. You have to file every week and report any work or earnings.

Lucy Taylor
•Got it, I'll make sure to stay on top of the weekly claims if I get approved. Thanks for the reminder!

This thread was super helpful for me too. I'm in a similar situation and was also confused about the work requirements.

•Glad it helped you too! Seems like a lot of people get confused about the quarter system vs. just counting weeks.

For anyone reading this later - the Washington ESD website has all this info but it's kind of buried. The 'Eligibility' section breaks down all the requirements pretty clearly once you find it.

•Thanks for that tip! I'll bookmark that section for future reference.

Final update: I applied and got approved! Turns out I had way more than enough earnings in my base period. Thanks again everyone for pushing me to just apply instead of worrying about it.
