How long does it take to receive an unemployment check from Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after waiting 3 weeks for adjudication to complete. My claim status changed to 'approved for benefits' yesterday but I haven't received any payment yet. I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday. How long should I expect to wait before getting my first unemployment check? I'm getting really anxious about my bills piling up.

Congratulations on getting approved! Usually takes 2-3 business days after filing your weekly claim for the payment to hit your account. Since you filed Sunday, you should see something by Wednesday or Thursday.

•Thank you! That's a relief. I was worried it would take another week or two.

The timing depends on your payment method. Direct deposit is fastest - usually 2-3 business days. The debit card (ReliaCard) can take 3-5 business days for the first payment, then it's faster after that. Paper checks take the longest at 7-10 business days.

•I chose direct deposit so hopefully it'll be on the faster side. Thanks for the breakdown!

•Wait, there's a debit card option? I've been getting paper checks and they take forever.

•Yes, you can switch to the ReliaCard in your Washington ESD account. Much faster than paper checks.

I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my payment delay but their phone lines are impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually get through to someone?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents - saved me hours of calling. Check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. I got through on my third try doing that.

WASHINGTON ESD PAYMENTS ARE SO SLOW!! I've been waiting 6 days for my check and still nothing. This system is broken.

•Six days isn't unusual if you're getting paper checks. Have you checked your payment history in your account to see if it shows as issued?

•It shows 'payment issued' from 4 days ago but no check in my mailbox yet.

•Mail delivery has been really slow lately. Maybe give it another day or two?

•That's good to know! So it gets more predictable after the first one?

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week and answering all the questions correctly. Missing even one week can delay everything.

•I've been very careful about that. Set a reminder on my phone for Sunday mornings.

•Smart! I forgot one week early on and it was a nightmare to fix.

I'm still confused about the job search requirements. Do I need to complete those before getting my first payment?

•You need to be actively seeking work and keep a job search log, but it shouldn't delay your first payment. The job search requirements are ongoing, not a prerequisite for payment.

•Okay good, I was worried I had missed something important.

•Make sure you understand the specific requirements though - it's 3 job search activities per week in Washington.

I remember my first unemployment payment back in 2019 - took almost 2 weeks because I had some verification issues. But once everything was sorted, payments came regularly every week. The waiting is the worst part.

•What kind of verification issues? I hope I don't run into any problems.

•They needed additional income verification from my previous employer. Nothing major, just took time to process.

Check your ReliaCard account if you chose that option. Sometimes the payment is there but you don't get the text notification right away.

•Good point! I didn't realize you could check the card balance online.

•Yeah, you can log into the ReliaCard website or use their app to check your balance anytime.

Washington ESD has been pretty good about payment timing lately. I think they improved their processing after all the issues during the pandemic.

•That's encouraging to hear. I was worried based on some of the horror stories I've read online.

Just wanted to add that holidays can delay payments by an extra day or two. Something to keep in mind for future weeks.

•Good to know! I'll factor that in if there are any upcoming holidays.

•Presidents Day is coming up next month, so that might affect timing then.

Has anyone had issues with their bank flagging the unemployment deposits as suspicious? My credit union held my first payment for review.

Paolo Esposito
•That's not uncommon for the first deposit. You might want to call your bank and let them know you're expecting regular unemployment payments.

•Good idea, I'll call them tomorrow to set that up.

I used Claimyr when I needed to check on a delayed payment and actually got through to someone at Washington ESD who could see exactly where my payment was in the system. Totally worth it when you're stressed about money.

•That sounds really helpful. I might try that if my payment doesn't show up by Thursday.

•I checked out that Claimyr website earlier and it actually looks legit. Might give it a try next time I need to call.

The payment timing also depends on when exactly you submit your weekly claim. If you file really late on Sunday night, it might not process until Monday.

•I filed mine around 2pm on Sunday, so hopefully that was early enough.

•That should be fine. I think the cutoff is midnight Sunday.

Once you get into the routine, it becomes pretty predictable. File on Sunday, payment by Wednesday is the typical pattern for direct deposit.
