How long does it take for Washington ESD unemployment check to come in the mail?

I just got approved for unemployment benefits last week and I'm wondering how long it usually takes for the actual check to arrive in the mail? I know most people do direct deposit but I don't have a bank account right now so I had to go with the paper check option. My claim shows as paid but I haven't received anything yet. Should I be worried or is this normal timing?

Usually takes 5-7 business days for Washington ESD to mail out paper checks once your claim shows as paid. If it's been longer than that, you might want to call them to make sure they have the right address.

It's only been 4 days so I guess I should wait a bit longer. Thanks for the info!

Good luck trying to call Washington ESD lol. I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my adjudication issue and can never get through. The phone system is completely broken.

Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it last month and it actually got me through to an Washington ESD agent within 20 minutes. They have this system that calls for you and waits on hold. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

I've been getting paper checks for 6 months now and they're pretty consistent. Usually arrive on Thursday or Friday if my weekly claim was processed on Monday. Make sure you check your address in your Washington ESD account though - I had a typo in mine that delayed my first check by 2 weeks.

Good point about checking the address. I just logged in and it looks correct but I'll double check everything.

Why don't you just get direct deposit? It's so much faster and you don't have to worry about checks getting lost in the mail.

I don't have a bank account right now. Had some issues with my previous bank and haven't opened a new one yet.

The standard timeframe for Washington ESD paper checks is 5-7 business days from when your claim shows as paid. However, there can be delays due to postal service issues or if there are any problems with your claim. You can track your payment history in your SecureAccess Washington account to see the exact date it was issued.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I'll check my payment history to see when it was actually issued.

This is good info. I was wondering the same thing since I just switched from direct deposit to paper checks.

PAPER CHECKS ARE THE WORST!! I had so many problems with them getting lost or delayed. One time it took 3 WEEKS to get my check and Washington ESD wouldn't do anything about it. They just said 'wait longer' every time I called.

0 coins

That's terrible! Did you ever get the missing check or did you have to request a replacement?

Eventually got a replacement but it took forever. Had to fill out some form and wait another week.

If you're worried about it, you can always contact Washington ESD to verify they have the right mailing address. Sometimes there are issues with the address verification system.

Good luck getting through to them on the phone though. I've been trying for days to ask about my job search requirements and can't get past the busy signal.

I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's this service that calls Washington ESD for you and waits on hold. Worked great for me - got through in about 15 minutes instead of hours of trying myself.

Mine usually takes exactly 6 business days. I've been tracking it and it's pretty consistent. Filed on Sunday, processed Monday, check arrives the following Tuesday.

That's really specific timing. I'll keep track of mine to see if there's a pattern.

wow you're really organized about tracking this stuff

Just a heads up - if your check doesn't arrive within 10 business days, you should definitely contact Washington ESD. That's their official guideline for when to report a missing payment.

0 coins

Good to know there's an official timeframe. I'll wait the full 10 days before panicking.

Yeah and if you do need to call them, be prepared to wait on hold forever. The phone system is ridiculous.

I switched to paper checks last month because I was having issues with my bank. The first one took 8 days but all the ones after that have been 5-6 days consistently.

0 coins

That's reassuring. Maybe the first one just takes a bit longer to process.

0 coins

Yeah I think there might be some extra processing time for the first paper check while they update your account settings.

Make sure you're checking your mailbox every day! I almost missed mine because it came in a plain white envelope and I thought it was junk mail at first.

0 coins

Oh good point! I'll make sure to check carefully. What does the envelope look like?

It's just a regular white business envelope with the Washington ESD return address. Nothing fancy about it.

If you're really worried about timing, you could always try calling Washington ESD to confirm when it was mailed. Though getting through to them is a nightmare.

I tried calling them yesterday about my adjudication issue and gave up after 2 hours on hold. Someone mentioned this Claimyr thing earlier - might be worth trying that instead.

0 coins

Yeah I saw that mentioned too. Seems like it might be worth it if you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

Been getting paper checks for unemployment for months now. They're pretty reliable once you get used to the timing. Usually 5-7 days like everyone else said.

Thanks for the confirmation. I feel better knowing it's normal timing.
