EDD paper check delivery time - first payment issued 5/23 not arrived yet
Anyone know how long EDD paper checks take to arrive in the mail? My UI Online account shows my first unemployment payment was issued on 5/23, but I still haven't received it (chose paper checks instead of the Money Network card or direct deposit). It's been almost a week now and I'm starting to get nervous since rent is due soon. Is this normal waiting time or should I be concerned? Should I call EDD about this or just keep waiting? Never been on unemployment before so not sure what to expect.

Paper checks typically take 7-10 business days to arrive after the payment is issued. Since your payment was issued on 5/23, I'd give it until at least this Friday (considering weekends/holidays). Your UI Online account should show the payment as 'paid' already even if the check is still in transit. If you don't receive it by early next week, then I'd recommend contacting EDD to check on the status.

•Thanks for the info! The UI Online does show 'paid' status. I'll wait until Monday before freaking out then. Really hope it comes by Friday though.

•2 weeks?! That's ridiculous. Did you have to do anything special or it just randomly showed up one day?

I'd strongly recommend switching to direct deposit or the Money Network card for future payments. Paper checks are the slowest method by far, and there's always the risk of them getting lost in the mail. With direct deposit, funds typically appear in your account within 1-2 business days after the payment is issued. The Money Network card takes about 3-5 business days for the first card to arrive, but then payments are loaded immediately once issued.

•That's a good idea. Can I switch methods now even though my claim has already started? And would I need to wait for this first check to arrive before changing?

•Yes, you can switch payment methods anytime through your UI Online account. Go to "Payment Preferences" in the menu and select your new preferred method. And no, you don't need to wait for the current check to arrive before changing. Any future payments will use your new method, while the current one will still arrive as a paper check.

When I first applied for benefits last year I also chose paper checks and deeply regretted it!! So slow and unreliable. My first check took 12 days to arrive and the second one never showed up at all! Had to request a replacement which took ANOTHER 2 weeks. Switched to direct deposit and never looked back!!!

•Oh no, that sounds awful! Now I'm worried mine might not show up at all. Did you have to do anything special to request a replacement check?

•Yeah you have to call EDD and tell them the check never arrived. They put a stop payment on the original check and issue a new one. But the big problem is actually REACHING someone at EDD to do this!!!

If you need to call EDD about your missing check, save yourself hours of frustration and use Claimyr. I was in the exact same situation with a missing paper check last month and spent 3 days trying to get through on my own. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD rep was able to verify my check was still in process and gave me the exact date to expect it. Worth it just for the peace of mind instead of wondering where your money is.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. Does it actually work? I've heard horror stories about being on hold with EDD for 5+ hours.

•It definitely worked for me. The system calls EDD for you using their algorithm to get through the phone tree, then calls you once they have an agent on the line. The best part was not having to listen to that hold music for hours!

•This is exactly why I tell everyone to sign up for USPS Informed Delivery! It's a free service that emails you pictures of mail that's supposed to be delivered to you each day. That way you know if something was supposed to come but didn't actually make it to your mailbox. Really helpful for important things like EDD checks or tax refunds.

•I didn't know about Informed Delivery! Just signed up for it now. Great suggestion, thanks!

Just to clarify a common confusion - when your UI Online account shows a payment as "issued" on a certain date, that's when EDD processed the payment, not necessarily when they physically mailed the check. There can be a 1-3 day delay between the issue date and when the check actually goes in the mail. So for your 5/23 payment, the check might have only been mailed on 5/24 or even 5/25. Just something to keep in mind when calculating expected delivery times.

•That's really helpful info! I assumed the issue date meant it was already in the mail. I'll definitely switch to direct deposit for future payments to avoid this stress.

I just went through this exact situation! My first payment showed as issued on 5/17, and the check finally arrived yesterday (5/28). So that was 11 days total, but only about 7 business days with the weekend and Memorial Day. The EDD systems are still catching up after all the pandemic chaos, so everything takes longer than you'd expect. For reference, I'm in Sacramento, so not even that far from their offices!

•Thank you! That timeline is helpful. I'm in San Diego so it'll probably take even longer to reach me. Fingers crossed for this week!

Totally off topic but make sure you're doing your work search requirements correctly while waiting! I got so focused on waiting for my money that I messed up my certification and ended up with a whole week disqualified! Don't make my mistake!!

•Good reminder! I've been applying to at least 3 jobs each week and keeping detailed records of everything. My next certification is this Sunday.

Update us when your check arrives! It helps everyone to know the current timeframes for paper checks.

•Will do! And I'll definitely be switching to direct deposit for future payments. Lesson learned!
