EDD payment switched to paper checks after submitting paystubs - one week shows paid but no check yet

Hi everyone, I'm seriously confused about my EDD situation right now. I submitted my paystubs about 10 days before certifying (certified this past Sunday) because my previous employer reported incorrect wages. After certifying, I called EDD on Tuesday to confirm they received my paystubs and to request paper checks instead of direct deposit. The EDD rep was super vague - said he wasn't sure if they received my documents but that he would 'push it through' and switch me to paper checks. Then he abruptly hung up before I could ask more questions! My UI Online account now shows 'paid' status for one week, but nothing for the second week. Does anyone know if this sounds normal? How long do paper checks typically take to arrive once your account shows 'paid'? Should I have received some kind of confirmation letter about my payment method change? I'm stressing because rent is due soon and I don't know when to expect actual money. Thanks for any help!

This is pretty typical for EDD unfortunately. Paper checks usually take 7-10 business days to arrive after your account shows 'paid' status. The fact that one week shows paid is a good sign - the other week might be pending for identity verification or the paystub review. You probably won't get a confirmation letter about switching to paper checks - that change just happens in their system. Keep checking your mail daily and your UI Online account for updates. If you don't receive anything within 10 business days of the 'paid' status, then you should call them back.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's a way to check online if they're actually sending me a paper check vs direct deposit? I'm paranoid they didn't actually switch it like the rep said.

omg i HATE when they just hang up!!!! happened to me 3 times last month!!! the whole system is messed up. my advice is call back and try to get a diferent person who actually knows whats going on. sometimes the paper checks take FOREVER like 2 weeks or more and sometimes they come in like 4 days it makes NO sense. good luck!!!

Seriously, the hanging up thing is ridiculous! I had one rep put me on hold and never came back. Had to call all over again after waiting 45 minutes!

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I checked the Payment Information section and you're right - my bank info is gone, so that's a relief. I'll give it until next Tuesday for the check to arrive, and if the second week isn't paid by Friday, I'll try calling again. Really appreciate your help!

My sister had the same thing happen where they switched her to paper checks without proper confirmation. She ended up waiting almost 3 weeks for the first check! The EDD is seriously understaffed and their customer service is terrible. I'd recommend calling again and specifically asking for a tier 2 specialist who can confirm your paystubs were received and processed.

I had a similar experience but my check arrived in 6 days, so it really varies. The tier 2 specialist advice is spot on though - regular reps often don't have access to see if documents were properly received in the system.

Just checked the mail - nothing yet. But that's good to know that sometimes they arrive before the system updates!

If you're having trouble reaching EDD and need confirmation about your paystubs and payment status, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to an EDD representative without the endless busy signals and disconnections. I was in a similar situation with document verification and used their service - got through to a tier 2 specialist in under 20 minutes who could actually see all my documents in the system. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. Definitely worth it when you need immediate answers about your claim.

To follow up on your concern about not receiving confirmation about the payment change - EDD typically doesn't send formal notifications when they switch payment methods. Their system is outdated and communication is minimal. The removal of your bank information from the UI Online portal (as you confirmed) is the only

I double-checked my address and everything is correct, thankfully. It's frustrating that they don't send confirmations for important changes like payment methods!

the exact same thing happened to my brother last month and he got his paper check exactly 8 days after the website showed paid. EDD is so disorganized its unbelievable

UPDATE: Some people have been reporting longer wait times for paper checks recently (10-14 days) due to EDD staffing shortages in their payment processing department. If your check doesn't arrive by day 10, call and ask specifically about the status of your check - they can see in their system if it was printed and mailed yet. As for the second week not showing paid, make sure to continue certifying for benefits as normal, even if you're waiting for issues to be resolved.

Thanks for the update! Today is day 5 since it showed paid, so I'll try to be patient. I'll definitely continue certifying on time. Really appreciate everyone's help and advice!

I just noticed that you mentioned they only pushed through one week's payment. This often happens when they're reviewing wage verification for a specific week. Since you submitted paystubs, they're likely checking that information against your claim. The good news is that once they verify and approve your paystubs, any pending weeks should be paid retroactively - you won't lose any eligible benefits. It's just a matter of waiting for their processing.

That makes sense. I reported some part-time hours for the second week, so maybe that's why it's under additional review. Fingers crossed it gets sorted soon!

Hey Sofia! I went through something very similar last year when I had to submit paystubs for wage verification. The mixed "paid" status (one week yes, one week pending) is actually pretty normal when they're reviewing documentation. What you're experiencing sounds like standard EDD procedure - they often process weeks individually when there are discrepancies to review. The paper check timeline everyone mentioned is accurate in my experience too. I got mine in about 7 business days. One tip: if you have a local EDD office that's open for in-person visits, sometimes going there can help get faster answers about document processing status than calling the phone lines. They can actually pull up your file and tell you definitively if your paystubs were received and are being processed. Hang in there - it's frustrating but it will get resolved!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Chloe! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same situation. I hadn't thought about visiting a local EDD office - that's a great suggestion! Do you know if they require appointments or if it's walk-in? I might try that if my second week doesn't update by early next week. It would be nice to get a definitive answer about whether my paystubs are actually being processed instead of just hoping the phone rep did what he said he would do. Really appreciate the encouragement - this whole process has been so stressful!
