How long do you need to work to get unemployment benefits in Washington?

I've been working at my current job for about 8 months now but I'm worried I might get laid off soon due to company restructuring. I'm trying to figure out if I've worked long enough to qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. Does anyone know what the minimum work requirements are? I've heard different things from coworkers - some say 6 months, others say a full year. I make about $18/hour and work full-time if that matters. Really hoping I don't need to scramble if the worst happens.

You need to have earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period to qualify for Washington ESD unemployment benefits. The base period is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. So if you've been working 8 months full-time, you should definitely meet the earnings requirement.

Thanks! So it's not just about time worked but actual earnings in different quarters? That makes sense.

Yeah and you also need to have earned at least 680 times the minimum wage during your base period, which is like $10,000+ right now.

I think you should be fine with 8 months of full-time work. When I got laid off last year I had only been at my job for 6 months and I qualified no problem. Washington ESD looks at your total earnings across all employers during the base period too, not just your current job.

Oh that's good to know! I did work part-time at another place before this job, so maybe that helps too.

Definitely include all your previous work when you apply. Every bit of earnings counts toward meeting the requirements.

Just went through this myself recently. The quarters thing can be confusing but Washington ESD has a tool on their website where you can check your earnings history. If you're still worried about qualifying, you might want to try calling them directly, though good luck getting through - I spent hours on hold before giving up.

The phone situation with Washington ESD is absolutely ridiculous. I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

Wish I'd known about that when I was trying to reach them! Ended up just filing online and hoping for the best.

The earnings requirement is really the key thing. You need wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period AND your total base period wages need to be at least 680 times the state minimum wage. With full-time work at $18/hour for 8 months, you're definitely going to meet both requirements. Don't stress about it.

This is exactly right. I work in HR and help people with this stuff all the time. 8 months of full-time work will easily qualify you.

That's really reassuring, thank you both!

been working for 3 years and still worried about this stuff lol. the system is so confusing sometimes

Right? You'd think after paying into it for years it would be more straightforward.

The requirements haven't changed much over the years, but I agree the way they explain it on the website could be clearer.

Don't forget you also have to be able and available to work and actively searching for jobs once you start collecting. That's another requirement people sometimes overlook.

Good point, I'll keep that in mind if I do end up having to file.

Yeah the job search requirements are pretty strict now. You have to log all your job search activities.

I was in a similar situation last year - had to file after 7 months at my job. Washington ESD approved my claim without any issues. The online application process was pretty straightforward too, just make sure you have all your employment history ready.

How long did it take to get approved?

About 2 weeks for me, but I didn't have any complications. Some people wait longer if there are issues with their claim.

The worst case scenario is that you apply and they determine you don't qualify, but then you'd know for sure. Better to apply and find out than assume you don't qualify and not try.

Exactly. There's no penalty for applying and being denied, so might as well try.

True, I guess I'm overthinking this.

wait I thought you needed to work a full year minimum? that's what my manager told me when I started

0 coins

No, that's not correct. It's based on earnings in quarters, not total time worked. Your manager might be thinking of other benefits or just misinformed.

oh wow good to know, thanks for correcting that!

If you do get laid off, make sure to file your claim right away. Benefits are only paid from the date you file, not from when you actually lost your job. Don't wait thinking you might find something quickly.

That's really good advice, I'll remember that.

Yeah I made that mistake and lost out on two weeks of benefits because I waited to file.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator where you can estimate what you might receive too. Might be worth checking out just so you know what to expect financially.

I'll definitely look into that, thanks for the tip!

The calculator is pretty accurate in my experience. Helps with budgeting if you do end up unemployed.

Had to deal with Washington ESD last month and honestly the hardest part wasn't qualifying, it was actually getting through to talk to someone when I had questions. Ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was a lifesaver. Finally got my answers without spending my entire day on hold.

I keep hearing about this Claimyr thing. Might have to check it out if I run into problems.

Just wanted to add that if you do get denied for any reason, you can appeal the decision. Don't just accept it if you think you should qualify.

Good to know there's an appeal process if needed.

Appeals can take a while though, so hopefully it doesn't come to that.

bottom line - 8 months of full time work should definitely qualify you. I've seen people qualify with less

Glad we could help clarify things for you. Hope you don't end up needing to file, but at least you know you're covered if you do.
