How long do you have to work to be able to collect unemployment in Washington?

I just started a new job 3 months ago and I'm worried about getting laid off due to company restructuring. I've been working full-time but I'm not sure if I've worked long enough to qualify for unemployment benefits if something happens. Does anyone know the minimum work requirements for Washington ESD? I've heard different things from coworkers and want to make sure I understand the rules.

In Washington, you need to have worked in at least two quarters during your base period and earned a minimum amount. The base period is typically the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file your claim. You also need to have earned at least $3,850 total in your base period.

So if I started 3 months ago, would that count as working in at least two quarters? I'm still confused about how the quarters work.

0 coins

It depends on when exactly you started. Quarters are Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec. If you started in January and it's now April, you'd have worked in Q1 and part of Q2.

You also need to have earned at least $1,925 in your highest earning quarter. So it's not just about time worked, but also how much you made. The minimum wage requirements can trip people up.

This is exactly what happened to me! I worked part-time for 8 months but didn't meet the earnings requirement.

0 coins

I'm working full-time at $22/hour so I think I should be okay on the earnings part, assuming I qualify time-wise.

The whole Washington ESD system is confusing honestly. I had to call them multiple times just to understand my base period calculation. Their website explanation is terrible and when you call you're on hold forever.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents quickly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made my life so much easier when I needed to verify my eligibility.

Interesting, I've never heard of that. Does it actually work or is it just another service that takes your money?

0 coins

It worked great for me. I was able to speak with an actual Washington ESD person within 30 minutes instead of calling for days.

0 coins

wait so if you work 3 months you might not qualify? that seems really unfair especially if you get laid off through no fault of your own

0 coins

The system is designed to ensure people have established a work history before receiving benefits. It prevents people from working very briefly just to collect unemployment.

0 coins

i guess that makes sense but still sucks for people in tough situations

So let me make sure I understand - I need to work in at least 2 quarters, earn at least $3,850 total, AND earn at least $1,925 in my highest quarter? Are there any other requirements?

0 coins

Those are the main financial requirements. You also need to be unemployed through no fault of your own, be able and available for work, and actively seek work while receiving benefits.

0 coins

Don't forget you have to register with WorkSource and complete job search activities. Washington ESD is pretty strict about the work search requirements now.

I've been working for 6 months and just got my layoff notice. Should I file immediately or wait until my last day of work?

0 coins

File your claim as soon as you receive notice of your layoff, but make sure to report your last day of work accurately. Benefits don't start until after your last day of employment.

0 coins

Thanks! I was worried about filing too early and messing something up.

The base period calculation is really confusing. I worked seasonal jobs for two years but apparently my base period didn't include my highest earning months so I got denied initially.

0 coins

You might have been eligible for an alternate base period calculation. Did you appeal the denial or ask about using different quarters?

0 coins

I eventually figured it out but it took months of back and forth with Washington ESD. Really frustrating process.

Does anyone know if contract work counts toward the work requirements? I've been doing 1099 contract work for the past 4 months.

0 coins

Contract work generally doesn't count for regular unemployment benefits because you're considered self-employed. However, there might be other programs available depending on your situation.

0 coins

You'd need to look into self-employment assistance programs or other options. Regular UI is for employees, not contractors.

I'm in a similar situation as OP. Started my job in January and it's now May. Pretty sure I'll qualify but nervous about the whole process.

0 coins

At least you've worked longer than me! Sounds like you should definitely meet the requirements if you've been full-time.

0 coins

Yeah, I've been full-time at decent pay so I think I'm good. Just hate that we have to worry about this stuff.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator that can help you estimate if you qualify and how much you might receive. It's under the 'Calculate Benefit Amount' section.

0 coins

I'll check that out! Didn't know they had a calculator available.

0 coins

That calculator is helpful but remember it's just an estimate. Your actual eligibility determination happens when you file your claim.

0 coins

been there done that with the whole calling Washington ESD thing. took me literally 200+ calls over 3 days to get through to someone who could answer my base period questions

0 coins

I used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it was a game changer. Got through to Washington ESD in like 20 minutes when I needed to check my claim status. Worth every penny to avoid that calling nightmare.

Just want to point out that the work requirements exist for good reasons. The system would be overwhelmed if everyone who worked a few weeks could collect benefits. It's designed to help people who've established a work history.

0 coins

I get that but it still feels harsh when you lose a job after 3-4 months through no fault of your own. Maybe there could be a middle ground.

0 coins

That's fair. The system isn't perfect but it has to balance helping people with preventing abuse.

0 coins

For anyone reading this thread later - make sure you keep good records of your work history and earnings. Washington ESD will verify everything and it goes much smoother if you have documentation ready.

0 coins

Good advice! I'll start keeping better track of my pay stubs and employment dates.

0 coins

Yes! And keep records of any severance pay or vacation payouts too. Those can affect your benefit start date.

0 coins

I qualified with exactly 2 quarters of work but barely met the earnings requirement. It was close but I got approved. Don't give up if you think you're borderline.

0 coins

That's encouraging! Did you have any issues during the application process?

0 coins

Pretty straightforward actually. Just had to wait for them to verify my earnings with my employer.

0 coins

The whole system is set up to make it hard for people to get help when they need it most. Typical government bureaucracy making people jump through hoops.

0 coins

While the system can be frustrating, the requirements exist to ensure benefits go to people who've contributed to the system through their work history.

0 coins

I understand that but the process could be more user-friendly and transparent.

0 coins

Bottom line for OP - if you've worked 3 months full-time at decent pay, you might qualify depending on exactly when you started and which quarters you worked in. The Washington ESD website has all the specific details, or you can call to verify.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! I feel much more informed about the requirements now.

0 coins

Good luck OP! Hope you don't end up needing to use this information but at least you'll be prepared.
