How long do you have to be at a job for unemployment benefits in Washington?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment in Washington state. I worked at my last job for about 8 months before they laid me off due to budget cuts. Before that I had a different job for like 6 months but quit because the manager was horrible. I'm confused about whether I worked long enough to get UI benefits. Does anyone know what the minimum time requirements are? I've been looking on the Washington ESD website but it's not super clear to me.

It's not really about how long you worked at one specific job - Washington ESD looks at your total earnings over what they call your 'base period.' You need to have earned at least $1,685 total during your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. So if you made enough money between both jobs combined, you should qualify.

Oh that makes more sense! So they look at total earnings, not just one job. That's good to know, thank you!

Wait, is that $1,685 total or per quarter? I'm in a similar situation.

You also need to have worked in at least 2 quarters during your base period. The fact that you quit your previous job might be an issue though - Washington ESD will look at the reason for separation from ALL your recent jobs, not just your most recent one. Since you were laid off from your last job, that's good, but they might ask about why you quit the other one.

Ugh that's what I was worried about. The manager at my old job was really creating a hostile work environment but I don't know if I can prove that.

You might still be okay - Washington ESD sometimes allows 'good cause' for quitting if you can document the hostile work environment.

I had a similar situation last year and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about my eligibility. I kept calling and getting hung up on or being on hold forever. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to an actual agent. Check out their website at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made it so much easier to get my questions answered about my base period and work history.

How does that work exactly? Do they call for you or something?

0 coins

Yeah basically they handle the calling process and get you connected to an agent. Way better than spending hours on hold.

That sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate at this point lol

just file and see what happens. worst case they say no. i worked 3 months at one job and got benefits so i think ur probably fine

That's not really helpful advice. It's better to understand the requirements first so you know what to expect.

ok whatever works for me might not work for everyone i guess

The Washington ESD system is so confusing! I've been trying to figure out my own eligibility for weeks. I worked part-time at two different jobs over the past year but neither was very long. One was 4 months, the other was about 7 months. I'm worried I didn't make enough money to qualify.

Part-time work counts too! You just need to add up all your earnings from all jobs during your base period. The $1,685 minimum is total, not per job.

That's reassuring, thank you! I should probably just apply and see what they say about my earnings.

Be prepared for them to potentially put your claim into adjudication if there are any questions about why you left jobs. Mine took 6 weeks to get resolved because they had to investigate my separation from a previous employer. It's frustrating but just be patient and provide any documentation they ask for.

6 weeks?! That's terrifying. I can't go that long without income.

Not everyone goes through adjudication - don't panic before you even apply!

0 coins

True, but it's good to be prepared. Having documentation ready can speed things up if they do have questions.

I think there's also something about having to earn a certain amount in your highest quarter? Like you need to have earned at least $1,685 total AND have earned enough in your highest-earning quarter. I'm not 100% sure on the exact numbers though.

Yes, you need earnings in at least 2 quarters AND your total base period wages need to be at least 1.25 times your high quarter wages. It's a bit complicated but most people who worked steadily for several months meet these requirements.

Thanks for clarifying! The math gets confusing but sounds like OP should be fine with 8 months at one job plus 6 at another.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE IT HARD FOR PEOPLE TO GET BENEFITS! They throw all these complicated rules at you hoping you'll just give up. Don't let them discourage you - if you worked and paid taxes you deserve benefits when you're laid off!

I mean, they do need some requirements to prevent fraud and make sure the money goes to people who actually worked...

0 coins

Sure but they make it way more complicated than it needs to be!

When I applied last year, I used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD and ask about my work history. The agent was able to pull up my wages from all my jobs and tell me exactly what my base period looked like. Really helpful to get that info before filing so I knew what to expect.

0 coins

Did they charge you for that service?

0 coins

Yeah there's a fee but it was worth it to avoid the headache of trying to get through on my own. Plus I got accurate information about my specific situation.

Just want to add that if you do apply and get approved, make sure you understand the job search requirements. You'll need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. Washington ESD is pretty strict about that.

Good point, I hadn't even thought about that part yet. One step at a time I guess!

The job search stuff isn't too bad if you stay on top of it. Just apply to jobs and keep track.

ok so i'm reading all this and getting more confused lol. if i worked at 3 different jobs over the past year but only for like 3-4 months each, do i still qualify? none of the jobs were full time

Natalie Chen

•

It depends on how much you earned total, not how long each job lasted. Add up all your earnings from the past year and see if it's at least $1,685. Part-time and short-term jobs count!

ok cool i think i made more than that. gonna apply and see what happens

Make sure you have all your employer info ready when you apply - names, addresses, dates of employment, reason for leaving each job.

This thread is really helpful! I was in almost the exact same situation as OP - worked at one job for about 6 months, then another for 10 months before getting laid off. I was worried about not having enough work history but sounds like I should be fine. Thanks everyone!

Yeah definitely sounds like you'd qualify. The Washington ESD website has a calculator tool too if you want to estimate your weekly benefit amount.

Oh that's useful, I'll check that out!

One more thing - if you do end up needing to talk to Washington ESD about your eligibility or any other questions, I've heard good things about that Claimyr service people mentioned. My cousin used it when she had issues with her claim and said it saved her tons of time and frustration.

I'm definitely going to look into that if I run into problems. The phone system seems like a nightmare from what everyone says.

It really is. I spent literally 8 hours one day trying to get through and never talked to anyone.
