How long after you're fired can you file for unemployment in Washington state?
Got terminated from my retail job yesterday and I'm wondering if there's a deadline for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. I've never been unemployed before and honestly have no idea how this works. Should I file immediately or can I wait a few days to get my head straight? Also worried they might deny me since I was fired (wasn't for misconduct though, just downsizing). Any advice would be appreciated.

You should file as soon as possible! There's no waiting period in Washington state and your claim effective date starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits.

•Thanks! I'll get started on the application today then. Do I need any specific documents?

•Have your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation ready. The Washington ESD website walks you through everything.

File ASAP but know that being fired doesn't automatically disqualify you. Washington ESD will review your case and determine if it was for misconduct. If it was just downsizing like you said, you should be fine. They'll contact your employer to verify the reason.

•That's reassuring. How long does that review process usually take?

Sophia Bennett
•Can vary but typically 2-4 weeks if there's no issues. Sometimes longer if they need to do an adjudication review.

I was in your shoes last year when my restaurant closed down. Filed the same day I got the news and had my first payment within 3 weeks. The key is don't wait - every day you delay is money you're potentially losing.

•Good to know it worked out for you. Did you have any problems with the process?

•Only issue was getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions. Phone lines are always busy. Actually ended up using this service called Claimyr that helped me get through - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

wait i thought there was like a waiting week or something? my friend said she had to wait

•Washington eliminated the waiting week in 2020. You can receive benefits starting from your first week of unemployment if you're eligible.

•oh ok that makes sense, she filed in oregon i think

File today if possible! I made the mistake of waiting two weeks after I was laid off thinking I needed to 'cool off' first. Lost two weeks of benefits because the effective date starts when you file your claim, not when you became unemployed.

•Ugh that sucks. Definitely filing today then. Thanks for the heads up.

•This is so important - I see people make this mistake all the time. The clock starts ticking from your file date!

Been through this process three times unfortunately. File immediately, be honest about why you were terminated, and make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if your initial claim is under review. Missing weekly claims can mess up your whole case.

•What do you mean by weekly claims? Is that different from the initial application?
0 coins
Grace Johnson
•Yes, after you file your initial claim you have to file weekly claims every week to certify you're still unemployed and looking for work. It's separate from the initial application.

•Got it, thanks for clarifying that.

DON'T WAIT! The Washington ESD system is already slow enough without adding more delays. I filed the day I got fired and still waited almost a month for my first payment. If you wait weeks to file you're just pushing everything back further.

•A month seems like a really long time. Was there a problem with your claim?

Jayden Reed
•Nope, just the normal adjudication process. They have to verify everything with your employer and it takes forever. That's why filing immediately is so crucial.

File as soon as you can but also start looking for work immediately. Washington requires you to be actively searching for employment and you'll need to document your job search activities. Don't wait until your claim is approved to start looking.

•How many jobs do I need to apply for per week?
0 coins
Nora Brooks
•It's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records of everything.

same thing happened to me last month - got fired from my warehouse job for attendance issues (was taking care of sick mom). filed right away and got approved after about 3 weeks. being fired doesn't automatically disqualify you like people think

Daniel Price
•That's good to hear. I was worried they'd automatically deny anyone who got fired.

•nah they look at the whole situation. if it wasn't willful misconduct you're usually fine

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but getting through to Washington ESD when you have questions is nearly impossible. Their phone system is overwhelmed and you'll get hung up on constantly. Just be prepared for that frustration.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - it's a lifesaver for actually reaching someone at Washington ESD. Check out claimyr.com if you need to talk to an agent.

•Never heard of that but might be worth looking into. The regular phone system is absolutely useless.

File immediately but also gather all your employment documentation now while it's fresh in your mind. Dates of employment, reason for termination, supervisor names, etc. You might need this info later if there are any disputes.

•Good thinking. I'll grab my last few pay stubs and write down all the details before I forget.

•Smart move. Having everything documented upfront can save you headaches later if Washington ESD needs additional information.

Been unemployed for 6 months now and the biggest mistake I made was not filing fast enough initially. Lost almost 2 weeks of benefits because I waited. Don't make the same mistake - file today!

•Wow 6 months, that's rough. Hope things turn around for you soon.

•Thanks, been a tough year but hanging in there. Just don't want others to make the same filing mistake I did.

Quick question - does Washington have any restrictions on filing if you were fired vs laid off? Or can anyone file regardless of the reason they lost their job?

Sophia Bennett
•Anyone can file, but eligibility depends on the reason for separation. Fired for misconduct = likely disqualified. Fired for performance or downsizing = likely eligible. Washington ESD makes the final determination.

•Makes sense, thanks for clarifying that distinction.

OP definitely file today but be prepared for a long wait if they need to do an investigation into your termination. Mine took 6 weeks because my employer contested my claim. Eventually got approved but it was stressful.

Daniel Price
•6 weeks sounds horrible. Did you get backpay for those weeks?
0 coins
Lola Perez
•Yes, once approved I got all the backpay from my effective date. So filing early was still worth it even with the delay.

File immediately and don't let anyone tell you to wait. I see too many people on here who waited weeks thinking they needed to have another job lined up first or something. That's not how unemployment works.

Daniel Price
•Yeah I was kind of thinking I should wait until I had a better handle on my situation but sounds like that's wrong.

Nathaniel Stewart
•Totally wrong. The whole point of unemployment is to provide income while you're looking for work. File now, look for work later.

Just went through this exact situation 2 months ago. Filed the day after I was terminated and had my first payment 3 weeks later. The Washington ESD process is pretty straightforward if you're honest and provide all the required info.
0 coins
Daniel Price
•That's encouraging. Did they contact your employer to verify why you were fired?
0 coins
Riya Sharma
•Yes, they sent a form to my employer asking for details about my separation. Took about a week for them to respond.

One thing nobody mentioned - make sure you're actually eligible for unemployment benefits in Washington. You need sufficient work history and earnings in your base period. Most people qualify but it's worth checking.

Daniel Price
•I've been working for 3 years straight so I should be fine on that front. Good point though.

Santiago Diaz
•Yeah with 3 years you'll definitely meet the work requirements. Just wanted to mention it since some people assume everyone qualifies.

FILE TODAY! Seriously, there's no benefit to waiting and you're only hurting yourself by delaying. I learned this the hard way when I got laid off last year.

Daniel Price
•Alright, alright, I get it! Filing today for sure. You guys have convinced me.

•Good! We just don't want you to make the same mistakes we did. The system is confusing enough without adding unnecessary delays.

Last tip - when you file online, make sure to save all confirmation numbers and print out any documents they give you. The Washington ESD system can be glitchy and having paper backup is smart.

•Great advice, I'll definitely screenshot everything and print what I can.

•And remember, if you need to reach Washington ESD and can't get through on the phone, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. Saved me hours of frustration.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into phone issues. Thanks again!
