How long do you have after being fired to file for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I got terminated from my job yesterday and I'm panicking about the timing for filing my unemployment claim. Does anyone know exactly how long I have to file with Washington ESD after getting fired? I've heard different things - some people say you have to file immediately, others say you have weeks. I don't want to miss any deadlines and lose out on benefits. Also wondering if there's any advantage to filing sooner rather than later? My last day of work was Monday and I'm worried I'm already behind.

You don't have a strict deadline like 30 days or anything, but you should file as soon as possible. Washington ESD processes claims from the date you file, not from when you lost your job. So every week you wait is potentially a week of benefits you're not getting.

•That's a relief! I was worried there was some cutoff date. So if I file today, my claim would start from today?

•Exactly. Your claim effective date will be the Sunday of the week you file. So don't delay - get that application in today if you can.

I waited like 3 weeks after getting fired to file and I was fine. No penalties or anything. But yeah, you lose out on those weeks of payments. File ASAP!

•Same here - I procrastinated for 2 weeks thinking I'd find something quick. Big mistake, lost out on $1,200.

The real issue isn't how long you have, it's how long Washington ESD takes to process your claim. I filed immediately after my termination and it still took 3 weeks to get my first payment because of adjudication. If you were fired (not laid off), they have to investigate whether it was for misconduct.

•Oh no, I was fired for performance issues. Does that automatically disqualify me?

•Not necessarily. Performance issues are different from misconduct. You should still file and let Washington ESD make the determination.

•If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD during adjudication, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

WHY IS THIS SO CONFUSING!! I got fired 2 months ago and never filed because I thought I missed some deadline. Now I'm reading this and realizing I could have been getting benefits this whole time?? This system is ridiculous.

•You can still file now, but unfortunately you can't get retroactive payments for those 2 months. The clock starts when you file, not when you lost your job.

•I'm so frustrated. Nobody told me this when I got fired. HR just handed me my final check and said 'good luck.

There's no legal deadline to file, but practically speaking you want to file within the first week. Here's why: 1) Your weekly benefit amount is calculated from wages in your base period, and waiting doesn't help that calculation. 2) You have to serve a waiting week anyway (unpaid first week). 3) If adjudication is needed, that clock starts when you file.

•What's this about a waiting week? I have to wait a whole week with no payment?

•Washington has a one-week waiting period for new claims. Your first week is unpaid, then if you're eligible, payments start from week 2.

I made the mistake of thinking I needed to wait until my severance pay ran out. WRONG. You can file immediately even if you're getting severance - just report it on your weekly claims.

•I don't have severance but this is good to know. So many rules nobody explains!

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov - it's way faster than trying to call. The website walks you through everything step by step.

•Unless you run into technical issues like I did. Then you're stuck trying to call anyway and good luck getting through.

•That's exactly when Claimyr comes in handy. When I couldn't get through their phone system, Claimyr got me connected to an agent within minutes.

Update: I just filed online and it was actually pretty straightforward. Thanks everyone for pushing me to do it quickly. Now I just wait to see if my termination causes any issues with adjudication.

•Good job! Keep filing your weekly claims even during adjudication - if you're approved, you'll get paid for those weeks.

•Smart move. Even if adjudication takes a while, at least your claim date is locked in now.

I work in HR and I always tell people to file immediately. There's literally no benefit to waiting, only downsides. We've had employees wait months thinking they needed to 'look for work first' or some other myth.

•Wish my HR had told me this! They basically rushed me out the door.

•Same experience here. HR was useless about explaining next steps.

Just to clarify something I see people get confused about - there's no deadline to FILE, but there are deadlines once you're in the system. You have to file weekly claims every week and you only have 4 weeks to appeal if you're denied.

•This is important. The appeal deadline is strict - don't miss it if you disagree with a determination.

Another thing - if you wait too long to file, you might have trouble documenting your job search activities. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week, so start keeping track right away.

•Good point. I should start a log even though I just filed.

I helped my friend file 6 months after being fired and it went through fine. You definitely don't lose eligibility just because you waited, but you do lose those weeks of payments you could have received.

•That's encouraging. I've been putting it off because I was embarrassed about being fired.

Miguel Ramos
•Don't be embarrassed - unemployment benefits are there for exactly this situation. File as soon as you can.

Pro tip: even if you think you might not qualify (like if you were fired), file anyway. Let Washington ESD make the determination. You might be surprised what qualifies and what doesn't.

•That's exactly what I decided to do. Figure I have nothing to lose by trying.

If anyone runs into issues during the process and needs to reach Washington ESD, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. After weeks of busy signals, they got me through to an agent who cleared up my adjudication issue in 10 minutes.

•How much does something like that cost?

•Much less than losing weeks of benefits while waiting to get through. Check out their demo video - it shows exactly how the service works.

Bottom line: File immediately after job loss. Don't overthink it, don't wait for the 'right time,' just do it. The system is designed to handle your situation, whatever it is.

•Wish I'd seen this advice yesterday but at least I filed today. Thanks everyone!

I was fired for attendance issues and still got approved after adjudication. Every case is different, so don't assume you won't qualify.

•How long did your adjudication take?

•About 4 weeks, but this was during peak season. Could be faster now.

File within 24-48 hours if possible. I've seen people lose out on thousands of dollars because they procrastinated for weeks or months.

•This thread convinced me to stop procrastinating. Filing tonight.

Remember you also need to register with WorkSource Washington for job search requirements. Don't forget that step!

•The website mentioned that during filing. Adding it to my to-do list for tomorrow.
