Washington ESD deadline - how long do you have to file unemployment after termination?
Got let go from my job yesterday and I'm trying to figure out the timeline for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. I've heard different things about deadlines - some people say you have to file immediately, others say you have weeks or months. What's the actual rule? I don't want to miss out on benefits because I waited too long to apply. Also wondering if there's any advantage to filing sooner vs later in terms of getting approved or getting paid faster?

You technically have up to one year from when you became unemployed to file your initial claim, but you should definitely file as soon as possible. The reason is that your benefit year starts from the date you file, not from when you were terminated. So if you wait weeks to file, you're essentially losing those weeks of potential benefits.

•Oh wow, I didn't realize the benefit year starts when you file. That's really important to know - thank you!

•Wait, so if I was laid off 3 weeks ago but just filed yesterday, I lost those 3 weeks of benefits completely?

File ASAP! I made the mistake of waiting 2 weeks after my termination thinking I needed to get all my paperwork together first. Turns out Washington ESD doesn't backdate claims except in very specific circumstances. Those 2 weeks of benefits were just gone.

•That's exactly what I was worried about. Filing online right now - better safe than sorry.

•What paperwork did you think you needed? I'm gathering documents now but maybe I should just file first?

The one-year deadline is correct, but there's also a practical consideration - your weekly benefit amount is calculated based on wages from a specific base period. If you wait too long to file, you might end up in a different base period that could result in lower benefits. Plus, you have to file weekly claims to get paid, so delaying your initial claim just delays everything.

•This is really helpful info. Can you explain more about how the base period works? I'm confused about which wages they use.

Dominic Green
•Yeah I'm also confused about the base period calculation. Does it matter what time of year you file?

I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for days to ask about this exact question but their phone lines are always busy. Has anyone found a way to actually get through to talk to someone? I've called like 50 times this week.

•OMG yes the phone situation is ridiculous. I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an ESD agent. You put in your info at claimyr.com and they call you back when they get an agent on the line. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that. Did it actually work for you? I'm so desperate at this point I'll try anything.

•I used Claimyr too after seeing it mentioned here. Worked great - got through to ESD in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own.

Just want to add that even though you have up to a year, if you're claiming benefits for a week, you need to file your weekly claim within 4 weeks of that week ending. So if you file your initial claim late, you can't go back and claim benefits for weeks that are more than 4 weeks old.

•This is getting confusing. So there are multiple deadlines to keep track of?

•Think of it this way - file your initial claim ASAP, then file weekly claims every week you want benefits. Don't overthink it.

I waited 6 months to file because I thought I'd find another job quickly. Big mistake. Not only did I lose all those weeks of potential benefits, but when I finally did file, my claim got held up in adjudication for weeks because they had to verify my employment history from so long ago.

•6 months?! That's rough. Did you eventually get approved though?

Nora Bennett
•Yeah eventually, but it took forever and I had to provide tons of documentation. If I had filed right away it would have been much simpler.

The Washington ESD website says to file within the first week after becoming unemployed for best results. I filed the day after I got laid off and my claim was processed pretty quickly - took about 10 days to get my first payment.

Dominic Green
•10 days sounds reasonable. Did you have any issues with adjudication or anything?

Lauren Zeb
•Nope, it was pretty straightforward. I think filing quickly helped because everything was fresh and easy to verify.

wait can someone clarify something for me? i got fired last month but i thought i had to wait for my final paycheck and stuff before filing. was that wrong??

•You don't need to wait for your final paycheck to file. You can file immediately after your last day of work. You'll report any severance or final pay when you file your weekly claims.

•oh no... i've been waiting for nothing then. filing right now

Pro tip: file online at esd.wa.gov rather than trying to call. The online system is available 24/7 and you can get your claim started immediately. I filed at like 2am when I couldn't sleep after getting laid off.

•Good point about filing online. Much easier than dealing with their phone system.

I'm a little confused about something - if you file right away but you got severance pay, do you still get unemployment benefits? I got 2 weeks severance and I'm not sure how that affects things.

Mia Roberts
•Severance can affect your benefits depending on how it's paid. If it's paid in a lump sum, it might not affect your weekly benefits. If it's paid out over time, it could reduce your weekly benefit amount. You'll need to report it when you file your weekly claims.

Charlotte White
•It was a lump sum. Should I still file for unemployment right away even though I got severance?
0 coins
Mia Roberts
•Yes, file right away. The severance won't prevent you from filing, and ESD will determine how it affects your benefits when you report it.

This thread is really helpful. I got terminated 3 days ago and was stressing about when to file. Sounds like the answer is 'immediately' - wish I had known this sooner!

•Same here! At least we both know now. Good luck with your claim.

One thing nobody mentioned - make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history ready when you file. The online application asks for a lot of information about your previous employers. Having everything ready makes the process much smoother.

•Good point. I'm gathering all that info now before I finish my application.

•Also helpful to have your bank account info ready if you want direct deposit. Beats waiting for a debit card to arrive.

THE SYSTEM IS SO MESSED UP! Why don't they make this information clearer on their website? I've been unemployed for a month thinking I had to wait for some kind of paperwork from my employer. This is ridiculous!

Hannah Flores
•I agree the information could be clearer. The main thing is that you know now - file as soon as possible and don't wait any longer.

•Yeah I'm filing today. Just frustrated that I lost a whole month of benefits because of confusing information.

For anyone reading this who just got laid off - seriously, file your claim TODAY. Don't wait, don't overthink it, just do it. I learned this the hard way by waiting 2 weeks and losing those benefits forever.

Quick question - if you get fired on a Friday, do you wait until Monday to file or can you file over the weekend? Does it matter?
0 coins
Aurora Lacasse
•File as soon as possible, even if it's the weekend. The online system is available 24/7. Every day you wait is potentially money lost.

•Perfect, thanks. Filing tonight then!

I had to use Claimyr to get through to ESD when I had questions about my claim timing. The wait times to talk to someone are insane otherwise. Really glad I found that service when someone mentioned it in a thread like this.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save vs trying to call yourself. Plus if you need to resolve something with your claim, getting through quickly can mean getting your benefits faster.

PSA for anyone else who finds this thread: the key takeaway is FILE IMMEDIATELY after job loss. Don't wait for paperwork, don't wait for severance, don't wait for anything. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits.
