How long after working can you file for unemployment in Washington?
I just got laid off yesterday from my job at a manufacturing plant where I worked for 8 months. My supervisor said I should file for unemployment right away, but I'm not sure if there's a waiting period or if I need to wait a certain amount of time after my last day of work before I can apply. Does anyone know how soon I can file my Washington ESD claim? I really need to get this process started because I have rent due next week.

You can file immediately! Washington ESD doesn't require you to wait after your last day of work. In fact, they recommend filing as soon as possible after you become unemployed because there's a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits anyway.

•That's a relief! I was worried I'd have to wait weeks before I could even apply. So I can go online today and start the process?

•Exactly! Go to esd.wa.gov and click on 'Apply for Benefits' to get started. Make sure you have your employment history ready including dates and wages.

File ASAP for sure. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim gets processed. I made the mistake of waiting two weeks after I got fired thinking I needed to 'cool off' period and basically lost two weeks of potential benefits.

•Oh no, I definitely don't want to lose any time! I'll file today then.

•Wait, you don't lose benefits for filing late, the effective date is still your last day of work. But you're right that earlier is better for processing.

I had a similar situation last month and couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone to ask questions before filing. Their phone system is absolutely terrible - kept getting busy signals and when I did get through, I'd wait on hold for hours just to get disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD directly.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. Is it legit or just another scam service?

•It's legit - they just help you get through to Washington ESD agents when the phone lines are jammed. Saved me hours of calling and redialing.

•I've used them too when I had issues with my weekly claim. Works as advertised, no complaints here.

Just to be clear about the timing - you can file your initial claim right away, but your first payable week starts the Sunday after you file. So if you file on a Wednesday, your first week of benefits would start the following Sunday. This is important for your weekly claim filings.

Sean Fitzgerald
•Good to know about the Sunday start date. So I should file today even though it's Thursday?

•Yes, absolutely file today. The earlier you file, the earlier your claim starts processing and you can begin filing weekly claims.

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing though. took me forever to figure out where to actually start the application. why cant they make it more obvious??

•I agree the website layout could be better. Look for the big blue button that says 'Apply for Benefits' on the main page.

•Thanks for the heads up about the website being confusing. I'll make sure to look for that blue button.

One thing to remember - you need to have worked in Washington state during your base period to qualify. Since you worked 8 months recently you should be fine, but they look at a specific time period for eligibility.

•Yeah I've been working in Washington for the past two years, so I should meet the work requirements.

•What exactly is the base period? I keep seeing that term but don't understand it.

MoonlightSonata
•Base period is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. Washington ESD uses this to determine if you worked enough to qualify for benefits.

I filed the day after I got laid off and it was the right choice. Don't overthink it - just get your claim started. You'll need to do weekly claims anyway so might as well start the process rolling.

Sean Fitzgerald
•That makes sense. How long did it take for your claim to get approved after you filed?

Andre Dupont
•Mine took about 3 weeks to get fully processed, but that was during a busy period. Could be faster or slower depending on your situation.

File immediately but be prepared for the one week waiting period. This means your first week of unemployment won't be paid - it's just how the system works in Washington. After that, you'll get paid for subsequent weeks if you're eligible.

Sean Fitzgerald
•So I won't get paid for this first week even if I file today?

Zoe Papadakis
•Correct, the first week is a waiting week. But you still need to file your weekly claim for that week to maintain your claim.

•The waiting week is annoying but at least it's only one week. Better than some states that have longer waiting periods.

Make sure you have all your employer information ready when you file - company name, address, dates of employment, reason for separation, etc. Having everything organized will make the process much smoother.

•Good tip! I'll gather all that info before I start the application.

•Also have your social security number and ID ready. The system will ask for verification info.

Filed mine 3 days after getting terminated and wish I had done it sooner. The application process took longer than expected because I had to gather employment history going back 2 years. Don't delay like I did!

•I'll definitely file today then. Thanks for sharing your experience!

•Same here, I waited almost a week thinking I needed to 'process' getting fired first. Totally unnecessary delay.

The key thing is that Washington ESD calculates your benefit year from when you file, not when you stopped working. So filing late doesn't really hurt you benefit-wise, but it does delay when you can start receiving payments.

•That's good to know. I was worried I might lose eligibility if I didn't file within a certain timeframe.

•You have up to a year to file after becoming unemployed, but obviously sooner is better for cash flow reasons.

been thru this process twice now and both times filed immediately. first time took 2 weeks to get approved, second time took 4 weeks cuz they had to verify my employment. just depends on your situation but definitely start asap

•What kind of verification did they need the second time?

•they called my previous employer to confirm dates and wages. nothing major just took extra time

I was in a similar spot last year and couldn't get through to Washington ESD to ask questions before filing. Their phone system is brutal. Ended up using Claimyr to actually reach an agent who walked me through the filing process. Worth it if you need human help with your claim.

•How much does Claimyr cost? Is it worth paying for something you should be able to do for free?

Dylan Hughes
•They don't charge until you actually connect with an agent, and honestly it was worth it to avoid hours of busy signals and hold times. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person.

File today! I got laid off on a Friday and filed my claim that same day online. The process was pretty straightforward once I got started. Just make sure you answer all the questions accurately about why you're unemployed.

•Any tips for the application itself? Anything tricky to watch out for?

•Just be honest about everything - employment dates, wages, reason for leaving. They'll verify it all anyway so don't try to fudge anything.

The sooner you file the better. I learned this the hard way when I waited 10 days after getting fired because I was embarrassed about being unemployed. Those 10 days of delay just meant 10 more days before I could start the weekly claim process.

Sean Fitzgerald
•I can relate to feeling embarrassed, but you're right that it's better to just get it done.

•There's no shame in filing for unemployment - you paid into the system through your taxes. It's there for situations exactly like this.

File immediately but also start looking for work right away. Washington ESD requires you to be actively job searching, and they can ask for proof of your job search activities during your weekly claims.
0 coins
Sean Fitzgerald
•Good point about the job search requirement. How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?
0 coins
Miguel Herrera
•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week in Washington. Keep detailed records of where you applied and when.

•And register with WorkSourceWA too - that's another requirement for receiving benefits.

Had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I had questions about filing timing too. Used Claimyr twice now and both times got through to an agent within minutes instead of hours. Their system really works for cutting through the phone queue.

File your claim today! There's literally no benefit to waiting and every day you delay is another day before you can potentially receive benefits. The system is designed for you to file as soon as you become unemployed.

Just wanted to add that if you worked in multiple states, you might have options for where to file. But since you worked in Washington recently, filing here makes the most sense. The Washington ESD system is pretty user-friendly once you get started.

•I've only worked in Washington so that shouldn't be an issue for me. Thanks for the tip though!

•Yeah, multi-state claims can get complicated. Stick with Washington ESD since that's where your recent work history is.
