When can u apply for unemployment - Washington ESD timing requirements?
Lost my job at a manufacturing plant in Tacoma last Friday and wondering when I can actually file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. My supervisor said something about waiting periods but I'm getting conflicting info online. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after getting laid off or can I apply right away? Really need to get this process started since I have rent due next week.

You can file your initial claim immediately after losing your job - there's no waiting period to apply. Washington ESD actually recommends filing as soon as possible because your benefit year starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. The sooner you apply, the sooner you can start receiving payments.

•Thanks! That's a relief. I was worried I'd have to wait weeks before I could even start the process.

•Just to add - while you can file right away, there IS a one-week waiting period before you get your first payment. So file now but don't expect money in the first week.

File online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months. The system is usually less busy early morning or late evening.

•Good to know about the timing. I'll try logging in early tomorrow morning to avoid any crashes.

•Make sure you have all your employer addresses and dates handy. The system times out if you take too long gathering info.

I waited 2 weeks after getting fired thinking I had to and it was a mistake. Those 2 weeks are gone forever - you can't backdate your claim. File immediately even if you're not sure about all the details.

•This is so important! I see people make this mistake all the time thinking they need to 'wait' for some reason.

•Wow, good thing I asked. I was thinking about waiting until I had all my paperwork organized.

Had the same situation last year and couldn't get through to Washington ESD by phone for weeks to ask questions. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing exactly how it works.

•Interesting, never heard of that. How does it work exactly?

QuantumQuest
•Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

The key thing is you have to be unemployed through no fault of your own. If you quit voluntarily or got fired for misconduct, you might not qualify or might face a disqualification period.

•I was laid off due to downsizing, so that should be fine right?
0 coins
Mei Zhang
•Yeah layoffs due to lack of work are typically approved without issues. Just be honest about the reason on your application.

Don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still processing. Missing weekly claims can mess up your whole benefit period.

Andre Lefebvre
•When do I start filing those weekly claims?

Amara Eze
•Usually you can start filing weekly claims the week after you submit your initial application. Check your account for the schedule.

•The weekly claims are due every Sunday for the previous week. Set a reminder on your phone so you don't forget.

be prepared for adjudication if theres any question about why you lost your job... mine took 6 weeks to resolve even though it was clearly a layoff

Andre Lefebvre
•6 weeks?! Did you get backpay for that time?

Giovanni Ricci
•yeah once it was approved i got all the back payments but it was stressful not knowing

Also make sure you register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirements. You'll need to log job search activities every week.

•How many job applications do you need to do per week?

Liam McGuire
•Typically 3 job search activities per week, but it varies. Check your individual requirements in your account.

I'm in the same boat - got laid off yesterday from a retail job in Spokane. This thread is really helpful, going to file tonight!

One more tip - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file an interstate claim. Washington ESD will walk you through that process.

•I only worked in Washington so should be straightforward.

•Interstate claims can be tricky. I had to provide extra documentation for work I did in Oregon.

Update on the Claimyr thing - used it again this week to check on a payment issue and got through to Washington ESD in 8 minutes. Definitely worth it when you actually need to talk to someone.

•How much does it cost though? Can't afford much right now.

•It's pretty reasonable considering you don't waste hours on hold. Check their site for current pricing.

The Washington ESD website has a good checklist of everything you need before starting your application. Print it out and gather everything first.

Andre Lefebvre
•Thanks, I'll look for that checklist. Better to be prepared.

•Yeah that checklist saved me from having to restart my application multiple times.

whatever you do dont wait!! i thought i had to wait 2 weeks like some other states and missed out on those payments forever

•Same mistake I made. Those first two weeks of benefits are just gone if you wait.

Also heads up that your first payment might take a few weeks even after approval. Have some backup plan for immediate expenses.

•Good point. I have a little saved but not much. Hopefully it processes quickly.

•Check with local food banks and assistance programs while you're waiting. No shame in getting help when you need it.

Final advice - read everything carefully when filling out the application. One wrong answer about why you lost your job can delay everything for weeks while they investigate.

One last thing - if you have any union benefits or severance pay, make sure to report those accurately. They can affect your unemployment timing.

Andre Lefebvre
•No union or severance in my case, but good to know for others.

Miguel Alvarez
•Yeah severance can delay when you can start collecting. It's important to be upfront about it.

Tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier - actually worked! Got connected to Washington ESD in under 15 minutes when I'd been trying to call for days.

•Might have to try that myself. Been trying to reach them about my claim status for over a week.

•Definitely worth it if you're stuck. Way less frustrating than the regular phone system.

Good luck with your claim! Remember to keep detailed records of everything - dates, confirmation numbers, who you talk to. Helps if there are problems later.

•Great advice. I'll start a file tonight with all my unemployment paperwork.

•Screenshots of everything too. The system can be glitchy and it helps to have proof.

Bottom line - file immediately, keep filing weekly claims, and don't give up if you hit obstacles. The system works but it takes persistence.
