When can u apply for unemployment - Washington ESD timing requirements?

Lost my job at a manufacturing plant in Tacoma last Friday and wondering when I can actually file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. My supervisor said something about waiting periods but I'm getting conflicting info online. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after getting laid off or can I apply right away? Really need to get this process started since I have rent due next week.

You can file your initial claim immediately after losing your job - there's no waiting period to apply. Washington ESD actually recommends filing as soon as possible because your benefit year starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. The sooner you apply, the sooner you can start receiving payments.

Thanks! That's a relief. I was worried I'd have to wait weeks before I could even start the process.

Just to add - while you can file right away, there IS a one-week waiting period before you get your first payment. So file now but don't expect money in the first week.

File online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months. The system is usually less busy early morning or late evening.

0 coins

Good to know about the timing. I'll try logging in early tomorrow morning to avoid any crashes.

0 coins

Make sure you have all your employer addresses and dates handy. The system times out if you take too long gathering info.

I waited 2 weeks after getting fired thinking I had to and it was a mistake. Those 2 weeks are gone forever - you can't backdate your claim. File immediately even if you're not sure about all the details.

0 coins

This is so important! I see people make this mistake all the time thinking they need to 'wait' for some reason.

0 coins

Wow, good thing I asked. I was thinking about waiting until I had all my paperwork organized.

Had the same situation last year and couldn't get through to Washington ESD by phone for weeks to ask questions. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing exactly how it works.

0 coins

Interesting, never heard of that. How does it work exactly?

0 coins

Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

Sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

0 coins

The key thing is you have to be unemployed through no fault of your own. If you quit voluntarily or got fired for misconduct, you might not qualify or might face a disqualification period.

0 coins

I was laid off due to downsizing, so that should be fine right?

0 coins

Yeah layoffs due to lack of work are typically approved without issues. Just be honest about the reason on your application.

0 coins

Don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still processing. Missing weekly claims can mess up your whole benefit period.

0 coins

When do I start filing those weekly claims?

0 coins

Usually you can start filing weekly claims the week after you submit your initial application. Check your account for the schedule.

0 coins

The weekly claims are due every Sunday for the previous week. Set a reminder on your phone so you don't forget.

0 coins

be prepared for adjudication if theres any question about why you lost your job... mine took 6 weeks to resolve even though it was clearly a layoff

0 coins

6 weeks?! Did you get backpay for that time?

0 coins

yeah once it was approved i got all the back payments but it was stressful not knowing

0 coins

Also make sure you register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirements. You'll need to log job search activities every week.

0 coins

How many job applications do you need to do per week?

0 coins

Typically 3 job search activities per week, but it varies. Check your individual requirements in your account.

I'm in the same boat - got laid off yesterday from a retail job in Spokane. This thread is really helpful, going to file tonight!

0 coins

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

0 coins

Make sure to keep copies of everything you submit. You'll thank me later if there are any issues.

One more tip - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file an interstate claim. Washington ESD will walk you through that process.

0 coins

I only worked in Washington so should be straightforward.

0 coins

Interstate claims can be tricky. I had to provide extra documentation for work I did in Oregon.

0 coins

Update on the Claimyr thing - used it again this week to check on a payment issue and got through to Washington ESD in 8 minutes. Definitely worth it when you actually need to talk to someone.

0 coins

How much does it cost though? Can't afford much right now.

0 coins

It's pretty reasonable considering you don't waste hours on hold. Check their site for current pricing.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a good checklist of everything you need before starting your application. Print it out and gather everything first.

0 coins

Thanks, I'll look for that checklist. Better to be prepared.

0 coins

Yeah that checklist saved me from having to restart my application multiple times.

0 coins

whatever you do dont wait!! i thought i had to wait 2 weeks like some other states and missed out on those payments forever

0 coins

That's what I was worried about. Filing tonight for sure.

0 coins

Same mistake I made. Those first two weeks of benefits are just gone if you wait.

0 coins

Also heads up that your first payment might take a few weeks even after approval. Have some backup plan for immediate expenses.

0 coins

Good point. I have a little saved but not much. Hopefully it processes quickly.

0 coins

Check with local food banks and assistance programs while you're waiting. No shame in getting help when you need it.

0 coins

Final advice - read everything carefully when filling out the application. One wrong answer about why you lost your job can delay everything for weeks while they investigate.

0 coins

I'll be extra careful. Really appreciate all the help from everyone here.

0 coins

Good luck! The system works but it takes patience. Keep filing those weekly claims no matter what.

0 coins

Keep checking this forum too - lots of good info about common issues and solutions people have found.

0 coins

Will do! This has been way more helpful than the official website.

0 coins

Yeah the community here really helps each other out with Washington ESD problems.

0 coins

One last thing - if you have any union benefits or severance pay, make sure to report those accurately. They can affect your unemployment timing.

0 coins

No union or severance in my case, but good to know for others.

0 coins

Yeah severance can delay when you can start collecting. It's important to be upfront about it.

0 coins

Tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier - actually worked! Got connected to Washington ESD in under 15 minutes when I'd been trying to call for days.

0 coins

Might have to try that myself. Been trying to reach them about my claim status for over a week.

0 coins

Definitely worth it if you're stuck. Way less frustrating than the regular phone system.

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! Remember to keep detailed records of everything - dates, confirmation numbers, who you talk to. Helps if there are problems later.

0 coins

Great advice. I'll start a file tonight with all my unemployment paperwork.

0 coins

Screenshots of everything too. The system can be glitchy and it helps to have proof.

0 coins

Bottom line - file immediately, keep filing weekly claims, and don't give up if you hit obstacles. The system works but it takes persistence.

0 coins

Thanks everyone! Feeling much more confident about starting this process now.

0 coins

We've all been there. This community is great for support when dealing with Washington ESD.

0 coins

Hope everything works out quickly for you! Keep us posted on how your application goes.

0 coins

Will do! I'll update the thread once I get through the initial filing.

0 coins

Looking forward to hearing about your experience. Always helps to know what to expect.
