How long to wait to file for unemployment - Washington ESD timing questions
I got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant last Friday and I'm wondering about the timing for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Should I file immediately or is there a waiting period I need to observe? I've heard conflicting information - some people say file right away, others say wait a week. I don't want to mess up my claim by filing too early or too late. Also worried about the job search requirements and when those kick in. Anyone know the correct timeline for Washington state?

File immediately! There's no benefit to waiting and you could lose out on benefits. Washington ESD processes claims based on when you file, not when you became unemployed. The sooner you get your claim in, the sooner you can start receiving payments.

•Thanks! That's what I was hoping to hear. I'll get started on the application today.

•This is correct. I waited 2 weeks thinking I needed to and lost those benefits forever.

You should file your claim the week you become unemployed or the week after. Don't wait longer than that. The job search requirement starts after your first week of benefits, so you'll need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep records in WorkSourceWA.

•Good to know about the job search timing. Is WorkSourceWA hard to navigate?

•It's not too bad once you get used to it. Just make sure to log all your job contacts properly.

I struggled with getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim timing. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an agent in under 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems too good to be true.

•It's worth it when you need answers fast. Better than wasting entire days trying to get through.

•I might need to try this. Been trying to reach Washington ESD for a week about my adjudication.

DONT WAIT! I made that mistake thinking there was some cooling off period. You can file the day you lose your job. The longer you wait, the more money you lose. Washington ESD doesn't backdate claims very far.

•Yikes, glad I asked here first. Filing today for sure.

•Same thing happened to my brother. Lost like $800 because he waited thinking he needed to.

One thing to add - make sure you have all your employment information ready when you file. You'll need dates of employment, employer addresses, and reason for separation. Having everything organized will make the process smoother.

•Should I wait until I get my final paycheck or can I file before that?

•You can file before getting your final check. Just report it when you receive it on your weekly claim.

The waiting week was eliminated in Washington a few years ago, so you can get paid for your first week if you're eligible. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week.

•Wait, there used to be a waiting week? That explains some of the confusion I've been hearing.

•Yeah, it changed in 2020. Now you can get benefits starting your first week of unemployment.

I'm in a similar situation but I was fired for attendance issues. Does that change when I should file? I'm worried they'll deny my claim anyway.

•File anyway. Let Washington ESD make the determination. You might still qualify depending on the circumstances.

•Definitely file. Even if there's an issue, you want to get the process started. You can appeal if needed.

My claim has been in adjudication for 3 weeks now and I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to find out what's happening. The online portal just says 'pending' with no details.

•That's exactly when I used Claimyr. They got me connected to an adjudicator who explained what documentation I needed to submit.

•I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point. Bills are piling up.

•Adjudication can take 4-6 weeks sometimes. It's frustrating but try to be patient.

Don't forget you'll need to be able and available for work and actively seeking employment. Keep track of all your job search activities from day one.

•How strict are they about the job search requirements? Do they actually check?

Javier Gomez
•They can audit your job search log at any time. Better to be thorough from the start.

File online at esd.wa.gov if possible. It's faster than calling and you'll get confirmation that your application was submitted. Phone lines are always jammed.

•The online system can be glitchy though. I had to restart my application twice.

Emma Wilson
•True, but still better than trying to get through on the phone during peak hours.

If you're eligible for standby benefits because of a temporary layoff, the timing might be different. Check with your employer about expected return date.

Yara Elias
•My layoff is permanent unfortunately. Plant is closing down completely.

Malik Thomas
•Sorry to hear that. Then definitely file for regular UI benefits right away.

been through this process multiple times unfortunately. The key is filing quickly and staying on top of your weekly claims. Miss a week and you have to explain why.

•What happens if you miss filing a weekly claim? Can you make it up?

Isabella Oliveira
•You can file late but you'll need to explain the reason. Better to just set a reminder and file every week.

Make sure your claim gets processed before you start receiving any severance pay. Severance can affect your eligibility depending on how it's structured.

Yara Elias
•I don't think I'm getting severance but I'll double check with HR tomorrow.

Ravi Kapoor
•Good idea. Any lump sum payments need to be reported on your weekly claims.

The Washington ESD website has a good checklist of what you need before filing. Worth reviewing so you don't have to stop mid-application to gather documents.

•I found that checklist really helpful. Saved me from having to restart the application.

•I'll look for that checklist. Want to make sure I do this right the first time.

One more tip - if you're not sure about something during the application, it's better to answer honestly and let them sort it out than to guess wrong and create problems later.

•This is good advice. I tried to second-guess what they wanted to hear and ended up with my claim flagged for review.

•Exactly. They prefer honesty even if it complicates things initially.

For anyone else reading this thread later - the sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits. Don't overthink the timing aspect.

Just want to echo what others have said about Claimyr for anyone struggling to reach Washington ESD. I was skeptical at first but it really works when you need to talk to someone about your claim status.

•It's worth it when you're stuck in the system. Much better than spending days trying to get through.

Remember that Washington ESD benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later, but don't forget about the tax implications.

Yara Elias
•Good point. I'll opt for withholding to avoid a big tax bill later.

Anastasia Ivanova
•Smart choice. Unemployment benefits are taxed as regular income.

Final thought - once you file, you'll get a monetary determination letter showing your weekly benefit amount and total benefits available. Keep that somewhere safe.
0 coins
Yara Elias
•How long does it take to get that letter usually?
0 coins
Anastasia Ivanova
•Usually within a week of filing if there are no issues with your claim.

Good luck with your claim! Sounds like you got all the info you need. File today and start your weekly claims as soon as you're able.
