How long after layoff can you apply for unemployment - Washington ESD timing question

Got laid off from my manufacturing job last Friday and I'm wondering about the timing for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Should I apply right away or is there a waiting period? I've heard conflicting info about whether you can file immediately or if you need to wait a certain amount of time after your last day of work. Don't want to mess this up since I've never had to file for UI benefits before. Any advice on the proper timing would be really helpful.

You should file your Washington ESD claim as soon as possible after your layoff. There's no waiting period to apply - you can file the same day you lose your job or the next business day. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed and you can start receiving benefits.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if there was some kind of cooling off period. I'll get my application in today then.

This is correct. I filed the day after I got laid off and my benefits started right on schedule.

The key thing to remember is that your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file your initial claim. So if you file on a Wednesday, your claim effective date will be the previous Sunday. Don't delay because you can't backdate benefits in Washington state.

Good to know about the Sunday start date. That makes sense why everyone says to file quickly.

Yeah I learned this the hard way when I waited two weeks thinking I needed to 'use up' my severance first. Lost those two weeks of potential benefits.

Just make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file - your last employer's info, your Social Security number, and details about your separation. The Washington ESD online system will ask for all of this during the application process.

Do I need my actual termination letter or just the basic details?

•

Just the basic details for the initial filing. Keep your termination paperwork though in case they need it during adjudication.

I was in a similar situation last month and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions before filing. Ended up using Claimyr.com to actually reach an agent - they have this system that calls back when an agent is available. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped me get my questions answered before filing.

That sounds useful. I was dreading trying to call and waiting on hold forever.

How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money after the layoff.

It's worth checking out their site for current info. For me it was way better than spending hours trying to get through the regular way.

Don't overthink the timing - just file ASAP. I've been through this twice and both times I filed within 24 hours of getting laid off. The Washington ESD system is pretty straightforward for the initial application.

0 coins

That's reassuring. I keep second-guessing myself about whether I'm doing this right.

The anxiety is normal but the process isn't as scary as it seems. Just gather your info and file online.

One thing I wish someone had told me - even if you think you might get called back to work soon, still file your claim. You can always stop filing weekly claims if you get rehired, but you can't go back and claim benefits for weeks you didn't file.

0 coins

That's a good point. My supervisor mentioned they might have openings again in a few months but nothing guaranteed.

Exactly right. File now and deal with going back to work later if it happens.

ugh the whole unemployment system is such a pain. I've been trying to get through to someone at Washington ESD for three days straight just to ask a simple question about my existing claim. The phone lines are always busy or they hang up on you after an hour of waiting

That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - saved me so much frustration with the phone system.

I might have to look into that. This is ridiculous.

Just to be clear for anyone reading this - there's no minimum time you have to be unemployed before filing. Some people think you need to wait a week or something but that's not true in Washington state.

0 coins

Yeah I think that's where my confusion came from. Thanks for clarifying.

I think some other states have waiting periods which is probably where that confusion comes from.

The manufacturing industry has been rough lately. Sorry you got caught up in layoffs. At least Washington ESD benefits are decent compared to some states.

0 coins

Yeah it's been a tough year in our sector. Hoping things turn around soon.

Hang in there. I was laid off from Boeing last year and it took a few months but I found something better.

Quick question - do you need to file during business hours or can you do it anytime online?

Dylan Cooper

The online system is available 24/7 so you can file whenever it's convenient for you.

Perfect, thanks. I work weird hours so that helps.

I remember being worried about the same thing when I got laid off. Filed on Monday after losing my job on Friday and everything went smoothly. The hardest part was just getting over the mental hurdle of actually doing it.

0 coins

That's exactly how I'm feeling. Thanks for sharing your experience.

0 coins

The first time filing for unemployment definitely feels weird but it's there for exactly this situation.

Pro tip: keep track of your job search activities from day one even if you're not required to report them yet. Washington ESD has work search requirements that kick in after a few weeks and you'll need documentation.

0 coins

Good advice. How many job contacts do they require per week?

0 coins

Usually 3 per week but check the specific requirements when you start filing your weekly claims.

0 coins

Another vote for filing immediately. I waited a few days thinking I needed to 'process' getting laid off first and wish I hadn't. Every day you wait is potentially money left on the table.

0 coins

Everyone's been really clear about this - file ASAP. I'm convinced now.

Yep, there's literally no benefit to waiting and several downsides.

I used Claimyr last week when I had issues with my claim being stuck in adjudication for three weeks. Finally got through to someone who could actually help me understand what was going on. Way better than the runaround I was getting trying to call normally.

That's good to hear. I'm definitely going to try that service.

0 coins

Sounds like it's really helping people get actual answers instead of just waiting forever on hold.

0 coins

The bottom line is file as soon as you can after your layoff. Washington ESD won't penalize you for filing quickly but they also won't backdate benefits if you file late.

0 coins

Perfect summary. That's exactly what I needed to know. Filing today!
