When can you apply for unemployment after being laid off - Washington ESD timing rules?
Got laid off from my manufacturing job yesterday and I'm trying to figure out the timing for filing my Washington ESD claim. Can I apply right away or do I need to wait? I heard there might be a waiting period but I'm not sure if that's for applying or for getting benefits. Also worried about missing some deadline if I wait too long. Anyone know the exact rules for when you can file after a layoff?

You can file your Washington ESD claim immediately after being laid off - there's no waiting period to apply. The sooner you file, the better because your benefit year starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. Just make sure you have all your employment info ready including your last day of work.

•Thanks! So I don't lose anything by filing today versus waiting until next week?

Ruby Knight
•Exactly - file as soon as possible. Washington ESD can't pay you for weeks before you file your claim.

I made the mistake of waiting 2 weeks after my layoff to file thinking I needed a 'cooling off period' or something. Big mistake - lost those 2 weeks of potential benefits. File immediately on the Washington ESD website.

•Ugh that sucks! I did the same thing thinking I needed to wait. Cost me like $800 in benefits I couldn't get back.

•This is super common confusion. The waiting week that used to exist in Washington was eliminated years ago. Now you can file immediately and potentially get paid for your first week if eligible.

Quick question - if I file today but my last day of work was yesterday, do I still need to do the weekly claim filing this week or wait until next Sunday?

Ruby Knight
•You'll need to file your weekly claim for the week that includes your last day of work. So if you worked any part of this week, you report those hours and wages on your weekly claim.

•Got it, so I report the hours I worked up until my layoff date. Makes sense.

One thing to watch out for - if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status or resolve any issues, there's a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that can help you actually reach someone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

•Interesting, never heard of that. Is it legit or one of those scam services?

Mikayla Brown
•It's legit - they just help you get through the phone system to reach actual Washington ESD staff. Doesn't cost anything unless you actually connect to an agent.

wait I thought there was still a waiting week? when did that change?? I've been telling people they have to wait...

•Washington eliminated the waiting week back in 2020. You can now potentially receive benefits for your first week of unemployment if you meet all the eligibility requirements.

•wow I've been giving people wrong info for years then. good to know!

Make sure you file online at secure.esd.wa.gov - way faster than trying to call. Have your social security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and your last employer's info ready. The online system walks you through everything step by step.

•Do I need pay stubs or can I estimate my wages? I don't have all my recent pay stubs handy.
0 coins
Logan Stewart
•You can estimate but try to be as accurate as possible. Washington ESD will verify your wages with your employers anyway. Better to be close than to delay filing.

Does it matter what time of day you file? Like is there a better time to avoid website crashes or whatever?

Ruby Knight
•Early morning or late evening tend to have less traffic. But honestly the Washington ESD website is pretty stable these days, not like during the pandemic when it was constantly crashing.

•Cool, I'll try to file tonight then. Thanks for the tip!

Another question - if I file today but then find a job next week, can I cancel my claim or do I have to keep filing weekly?

Mikayla Brown
•You can stop filing weekly claims anytime. If you find work, just stop filing and your claim will become inactive. You can reactivate it later if you lose the job again within your benefit year.

•That's good to know - takes some pressure off about filing right away.

I got laid off last month and filed immediately. Still waiting on my first payment though because my claim is stuck in adjudication. Anyone know how long that usually takes?
0 coins
Ruby Knight
•Adjudication can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the complexity. If it's been more than 3 weeks, you might want to try calling Washington ESD to check on the status.

Mikayla Brown
•If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about your adjudication, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier can really help. They specialize in getting people connected to agents who can explain what's holding up the claim.

•Might have to try that. I've called like 20 times and either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold.

Pro tip: when you file, make sure your direct deposit info is correct. Nothing worse than having your benefits delayed because of wrong bank info. Double check your account and routing numbers!

•Yes! I made a typo in my account number and it took weeks to fix. Had to wait for the debit card instead.

Diego Castillo
•The debit card option isn't bad though - at least you still get your money while waiting to fix the direct deposit.

Update: just filed my claim online and it was way easier than I expected. Took about 20 minutes and I got a confirmation number. Thanks everyone for pushing me to file right away instead of waiting!

•Awesome! Now make sure to file your weekly claims every week even if you haven't received your first payment yet. Keep that claim active.

Logan Stewart
•Good job! The hardest part is just getting started. Weekly claims are much quicker once you get in the routine.

Wait, I'm confused about something. If I file today but my layoff was effective yesterday, which week do I claim for my first weekly claim? This week or next week?
0 coins
Mikayla Brown
•You claim for the week that includes your first full day of unemployment. So if you were laid off yesterday, your first claimable week started yesterday. You'll file your first weekly claim this Sunday for the week ending Saturday.

Emma Morales
•Ah ok, so I claim for the current week that just started. That makes sense.

Does Washington ESD require you to start looking for work immediately or is there a grace period after filing?
0 coins
Ruby Knight
•You need to be able and available for work from the start, and you'll need to start your job search activities right away. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week, which you'll track in your WorkSourceWA account.

Katherine Hunter
•3 per week seems like a lot but I guess it's better than having no income. Thanks for the info.

I filed my claim 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. Should I be worried or is this normal processing time?
0 coins
Mikayla Brown
•2 weeks isn't unusual, especially if your claim needs adjudication for any reason. You should be able to check your claim status online at secure.esd.wa.gov. If you can't get clear answers there, definitely try calling or using Claimyr to reach someone who can explain the delay.

•I'll check my online account again. I think I saw something about 'pending' status but wasn't sure what that meant.

For anyone filing - make sure you have your employer's info accurate including their UI account number if you know it. Saves processing time if Washington ESD doesn't have to hunt down your employer details.
0 coins
Nina Chan
•Where would I find my employer's UI account number? Is that on my pay stub somewhere?
0 coins
Donna Cline
•It might be on your separation paperwork or final pay stub, but don't worry if you don't have it. Washington ESD can look it up by company name and address.

Just want to echo what others said - file immediately! I waited thinking I needed to 'decompress' after my layoff and lost out on benefits I could have gotten. There's literally no benefit to waiting.

•Same mistake here. Thought I needed to try finding a job first before 'giving up' and filing for unemployment. Wish someone had told me you can file immediately and still look for work.
0 coins
Harper Collins
•Exactly! Filing for unemployment doesn't mean you're giving up - it's just smart financial planning while you look for your next job.

Quick process question - after I file my initial claim, when do I file my first weekly claim? Same day or do I wait until Sunday?
0 coins
Ruby Knight
•Wait until Sunday to file your first weekly claim. Weekly claims are always filed on Sundays for the week that just ended (Sunday through Saturday). Filing your initial claim and your weekly claims are separate processes.

Dylan Fisher
•Perfect, that's what I thought but wanted to double check. Thanks!

Has anyone had issues with the Washington ESD website during the application process? I'm getting worried about it timing out while I'm filling out all the employment history.
0 coins
Logan Stewart
•The website is much more stable than it used to be, but I'd still recommend having all your info ready before you start. That way you can fill it out quickly without worrying about timeouts.

Edwards Hugo
•Good idea. I'll gather all my employment dates and employer info first, then knock it out quickly.

One more vote for filing immediately! I was laid off on a Friday and filed that same day. Had my first payment within 10 days. The key is not to overthink it - just file as soon as you're eligible.

Nina Chan
•10 days is pretty fast! Gives me hope that I won't be waiting too long for my first payment.

•Yeah, I was surprised how quick it was. I think filing immediately and having all my info correct helped speed things up.

Last thing I'll add - if you run into any problems during the application process or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD afterward, don't give up after a few failed phone calls. Keep trying different times of day, or look into services like Claimyr that can help you get through to an actual person.

•This is so true. I almost gave up trying to reach them about a question on my claim. Finally got through and it was a simple fix that took 5 minutes once I talked to the right person.

Alfredo Lugo
•Exactly! Most issues are pretty straightforward once you can actually talk to someone who knows the system.
