How long before I can claim unemployment benefits in Washington?

I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant yesterday and I'm wondering how soon I can file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. Do I need to wait a certain period or can I apply right away? Also heard something about a waiting week - is that still a thing? Really need to get this process started ASAP since I have rent due in two weeks.

You can file your initial claim right away - don't wait! Washington ESD recommends filing during your first week of unemployment. The sooner you file, the sooner your benefit year starts. There's no waiting week anymore in Washington state, they eliminated that during COVID.

That's a relief about no waiting week. Do I need any specific documents when I file?

•

Yes, have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months ready. Also bank account info if you want direct deposit.

File immediately but be prepared for potential delays in processing. I filed three weeks ago and I'm still waiting for my claim to get through adjudication. The system is backed up and getting through to someone at Washington ESD by phone is nearly impossible with their call volume.

Oh no, three weeks? What's adjudication mean exactly?

Adjudication is when they review your claim to determine eligibility. Mine got flagged for some reason and now I can't get anyone on the phone to explain what's happening.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to ESD agents. They handle the calling and waiting for you. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

The key thing is filing during your first week unemployed. Even if there are processing delays, your benefit start date is based on when you filed, not when it gets approved. So file TODAY if you haven't already.

Good point, I'll file this afternoon. Better safe than sorry.

exactly this! i waited 2 weeks thinking i needed to job search first and lost those weeks of benefits

Wait I thought you had to be unemployed for 30 days first? Or is that just for certain types of benefits?

Rita Jacobs

•

No 30 day waiting period for regular unemployment insurance in Washington. You might be thinking of other assistance programs.

Oh okay, thanks for clarifying. The whole system is confusing.

Update: I filed my claim online this morning and it went through! Says I need to file weekly claims starting next week. How does that process work?

Rita Jacobs

•

Weekly claims are due every Sunday for the previous week. You'll report any work you did and wages earned. Make sure to keep track of your job search activities too since you'll need to log those.

How many job search activities do I need per week?

0 coins

Rita Jacobs

•

Three job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, interviews, networking events, etc. Keep detailed records.

Been filing weekly claims for 2 months now. Set a reminder on your phone for Sunday mornings - if you miss the deadline you can lose that week's benefits. The system is pretty strict about timing.

Good advice, I'll set that reminder now. What happens if I forget one week?

You can usually file a late claim but there might be delays in payment. Better to just stay on schedule.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A MESS!! I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for WEEKS about my claim status and nobody ever picks up the phone. It's ridiculous how they expect us to navigate this bureaucratic nightmare.

I feel your frustration. The phone system is definitely overwhelmed. Have you tried calling first thing in the morning?

Tried everything - morning, afternoon, different numbers. Always busy or disconnected.

This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. They've got the phone system figured out and can actually get you connected to ESD agents. Worth checking out if you're stuck in phone tree hell.

Just wanted to say good for you for filing right away. I made the mistake of waiting because I thought I might find work quickly. Ended up unemployed for 3 months and lost those first few weeks of benefits.

Manny Lark

Yeah, everyone here convinced me not to wait. Glad I listened!

One thing to keep in mind - your first payment might take 2-3 weeks after filing even if everything goes smoothly. Plan your finances accordingly. The system needs time to verify your employment history and wage records.

That's helpful to know. I was hoping for quicker payment but at least the process is started.

Some people get paid faster, depends on how clean your employment record is and if any issues pop up during review.

make sure you keep all your termination paperwork handy. sometimes Washington ESD asks for proof of why you lost your job especially if the employer contests your claim

I have my layoff notice, is that enough?

should be good but keep any emails or documentation about the layoff too just in case

Pro tip: screenshot or print your confirmation page after filing. I've had friends whose claims got 'lost' in the system and having that confirmation number helped them track it down.

Smart thinking, I'll do that now.

Been unemployed before and the key is staying organized. Keep a folder with all your unemployment paperwork, job search logs, and correspondence with Washington ESD. Makes everything easier if issues come up.

Manny Lark

Good advice. I'm setting up a folder on my computer for all this stuff.

also backup everything to cloud storage or email yourself copies. computer crashes happen at the worst times

Honestly the Washington ESD website is pretty user-friendly compared to other states I've dealt with. The hardest part is just getting someone on the phone when you have questions. That's where services like Claimyr really help - they handle the phone maze for you.

I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.

Don't stress too much about the process. Thousands of people file claims every week and most go through without major problems. Just follow the instructions, file your weekly claims on time, and keep looking for work. You've got this!
