Washington ESD - how long to file unemployment after losing job?
Lost my job at a manufacturing plant last Friday and I'm trying to figure out the timing for filing my unemployment claim. I've heard different things about how quickly you need to file with Washington ESD. Some people say you have to file immediately, others say you have a few weeks. What's the actual deadline? I want to make sure I don't miss out on benefits because I waited too long to start the process.

You should file as soon as possible after losing your job. Washington ESD doesn't pay benefits for the time before you file your claim, so every day you wait is money you're losing. There's no specific deadline, but the sooner the better.

•Thanks! I wasn't sure if there was a waiting period or something. I'll get started on the application today.

•Yeah don't wait. I made that mistake and lost 2 weeks of benefits when I could have really used that money.

File immediately. Washington ESD has a one-week waiting period anyway, so you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment regardless. But your claim effective date starts when you file, not when you lost your job. If you wait a month to file, you've lost a month of potential benefits.

•Wait, there's a one-week waiting period? So I won't get paid for the first week even if I file right away?

•Correct. The first week is unpaid, but then you'll get benefits for subsequent weeks if you're eligible and keep filing your weekly claims.

•Actually I think they got rid of the waiting week during COVID but I'm not sure if it's still gone

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to file. Kept getting busy signals and disconnected calls. If you run into that problem, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual person. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Made the whole process way less stressful.

•Is that expensive? I'm already worried about money since I just lost my job.

•I found it worth it considering how much time I was wasting trying to get through on my own. Better than losing benefits because you can't reach anyone.

definitely file ASAP!!! i waited like 3 weeks thinking i needed to give my employer time to do paperwork or something and found out i basically threw away 3 weeks of money. there's no deadline to file but you're only hurting yourself by waiting

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was worried about. Glad I asked before waiting longer.

•Same thing happened to me. Thought I needed to wait for some kind of official termination letter. Nope, just needed to file right away.

Just to clarify the waiting week situation since there was confusion - Washington state eliminated the one-week waiting period in 2021. You can get paid starting from your first week of unemployment as long as you file your claim and meet all the requirements.

•Oh good, I thought that might be the case but wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying!

•That's a relief. So if I file today I could potentially get paid for this week?

•Yes, as long as you meet all the eligibility requirements and file your weekly claim on time.

Make sure you have all your paperwork ready before you start filing. You'll need your Social Security number, your employer's information, and details about why you lost your job. Washington ESD's website has a checklist of what you need.

•Good point. I should gather everything first so I don't have to stop in the middle of the application.

•Yes! And if you worked for multiple employers in the last 18 months, you'll need info for all of them.

Quick question - do you have to file online or can you still do it over the phone? I'm not great with computers and the website seems confusing.

•You can file over the phone but it's much faster online. The phone system often has long wait times. If you need help with the online application, maybe ask a family member or friend to help you through it.

•Yeah I might need to do that. Thanks for the suggestion.

One more thing to keep in mind - even though there's no hard deadline to file, if you wait too long, Washington ESD might question why you delayed and it could complicate your claim. Better to file within the first week or two after losing your job.

Isaac Wright
•That makes sense. I definitely don't want to create any complications for myself.

•I filed about 3 weeks after losing my job and they did ask why I waited, but it wasn't a big deal. Still got approved.

The whole system is so confusing. I wish Washington ESD would just send you a letter or something telling you exactly what to do and when to do it. Instead you have to figure it all out yourself and hope you don't mess something up.

•I know right? It's like they make it difficult on purpose sometimes.

•The information is all on their website, but I agree it could be organized better for people who are filing for the first time.

I had to use Claimyr too when I was trying to get through to ask about my claim status. Couldn't get through for days on my own. The service worked exactly like they show in their demo video and I got connected to a real person within a few minutes.

•How does that even work? Do they have some special connection to Washington ESD?

Jade Santiago
•No, they just keep calling for you automatically until they get through. Then they connect you to the Washington ESD agent. Pretty simple but effective.

OP, since you just lost your job Friday, you're in a good spot timing-wise. File this week and you'll be able to claim benefits starting from when you lost your job. Don't overthink it - just get the application submitted.

One last tip - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't forget about that part or you'll miss out on payments.

Isaac Wright
•Good to know. How do the weekly claims work?
0 coins
Sophia Bennett
•You log into your account every week and answer questions about whether you looked for work, if you worked any hours, etc. It's pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it.

Aiden Chen
•And make sure you do your weekly claims on time! If you miss the deadline they make it a real hassle to get your payment.

Washington ESD is actually pretty good about processing claims quickly compared to some other states. As long as you have all your info ready and file soon after losing your job, you should be fine.

•Really? I heard they were backed up and slow.

•They were during COVID but things are much better now. Most claims get processed within a week or two if there are no issues.

I know this is probably obvious but make sure you're actually eligible for unemployment before you file. If you quit your job or got fired for misconduct, you might not qualify.

•I was laid off due to downsizing, so I should be eligible. Good point though.

Grace Johnson
•Yeah layoffs are usually straightforward for unemployment benefits. You should be fine.

If you run into any issues with your claim getting stuck in adjudication or anything like that, that's when services like Claimyr really come in handy. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things sorted out.

Nora Brooks
•What's adjudication? Is that something I should worry about?
0 coins
KhalilStar
•Adjudication is when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim before they can approve it. It's not necessarily bad, just means they need more information or clarification about something.

The bottom line is just file as soon as you can. There's really no benefit to waiting and you're potentially losing money every day you delay. Washington ESD makes it pretty clear on their website that you should file immediately after becoming unemployed.
