How many days to file for unemployment with Washington ESD after job loss?
Lost my job at a manufacturing plant in Spokane on December 15th and I'm trying to figure out the timing for filing my unemployment claim. My supervisor said I should file right away but my coworker told me I have to wait a certain number of days? I'm getting conflicting information and don't want to mess this up. Does Washington ESD have a specific window for when you can file after becoming unemployed? I've never had to deal with this before and the website isn't super clear about timing requirements.

You should file as soon as possible after your last day of work. Washington ESD doesn't require you to wait - in fact, waiting can cost you money since your claim starts the week you file, not the week you lost your job. The sooner you file, the sooner your weekly benefit amount gets calculated.

•So there's no waiting period at all? I thought there might be some kind of grace period or something.

•Nope, no waiting period for filing. There IS a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits, but that's different from when you can actually submit your application.

file immediately! i made the mistake of waiting 2 weeks thinking i needed to see if i could find another job first and it screwed me over. you lose those weeks forever

•Oh no, really? So if I wait too long I can't get benefits for those weeks I waited?

•exactly. your claim effective date is when you file, not when you lost your job. so if you wait a month, you lose a month of potential benefits

The technical rule is that you have up to one year from your separation date to file an initial claim with Washington ESD, but as others mentioned, you lose benefit weeks if you wait. Your weekly benefit amount is based on wages from your base year, and your claim becomes effective the Sunday of the week you file. So if you file on a Wednesday, your claim starts that previous Sunday.

•That's helpful about the Sunday thing. I was wondering about that timing.

•Wait, so I could technically file a year later? That seems weird. Why would anyone wait that long?

•Most people wouldn't wait that long, but the law allows it for unusual circumstances. Maybe someone was trying other options first, or didn't realize they were eligible. But again, you'd lose all those weeks of potential benefits.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to file last year. Kept getting busy signals and the website would crash. If you're having issues with the normal channels, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

•Is that legit? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's legitimate. They don't ask for your personal info or anything sketchy. Just helps you get through the phone queue to talk to a real Washington ESD person. I was desperate after trying to call for three days straight.

•I used something similar when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to get things moving.

File online at esd.wa.gov as soon as you can. Don't overthink it. The system will tell you if there are any issues with your application timing. Better to file and have them tell you if something's wrong than to wait and definitely lose benefits.

Just want to add that if you're getting severance pay, that might affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD has specific rules about severance and how it impacts your claim. But you should still file right away even if you're getting severance.

•I'm not getting severance, just my final paycheck. So I should be good to file immediately?

Connor O'Neill
•Yes, if it's just your regular final paycheck you're fine to file immediately. Severance is different because it's considered wages and can delay when benefits start.

•This is confusing. How do they decide what counts as severance vs regular pay?

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS SO FRUSTRATING!!! I tried to file back in October and kept getting error messages. Then when I finally got through, my claim went into some kind of review process that took WEEKS. File early but prepare for a headache.

•Oh great, now I'm worried about technical issues. Did you eventually get it sorted out?

Keisha Robinson
•Yeah eventually but it took forever. Had to call multiple times. The system is just overloaded constantly.

•This is exactly why I ended up using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. Couldn't deal with the constant busy signals.

Quick question - do weekends count for the filing timing? Like if I lost my job on Friday, should I file over the weekend or wait until Monday?

Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•File whenever you can. The system is available 24/7 online, and your claim effective date will be the Sunday of that week regardless of which day you actually submit it.

•Perfect, thanks! I wasn't sure if there were business day requirements or something.

I work in HR and deal with this question a lot. Employees should file immediately after their last day of work. There's no benefit to waiting, and you risk losing weeks of benefits. The only exception might be if you're expecting to be called back to work within a very short period, but even then, it's usually better to file and then report the return to work later.

•That's really helpful coming from someone who deals with this professionally. I feel more confident about filing right away now.

•What about temporary layoffs? My company does seasonal layoffs and brings people back. Should we still file immediately?

Amina Toure
•Yes, even for temporary layoffs you should file. You can report when you return to work. Don't assume you'll be back quickly - things change and you don't want to lose potential benefits.

been there done that. file NOW. dont listen to anyone who tells you to wait. the state owes you nothing and they will give you nothing if you dont ask for it immediately

•Harsh but probably true. I'll get my application in tonight.

One more thing to consider - if your employer contests your claim, it's better to have filed early so you have more time to deal with any appeals process. Don't give them more ammunition by having gaps in your filing timeline.

•I don't think my employer will contest it since it was a layoff due to lack of work, but good point about getting ahead of potential issues.

•Even with layoffs, some employers contest claims to keep their unemployment tax rates low. Better safe than sorry.

I waited three weeks to file because I was embarrassed about being on unemployment and thought I'd find something quickly. Biggest financial mistake I made that year. File immediately, swallow your pride, and start looking for work while collecting benefits.

•I appreciate the honesty. It's definitely humbling but I need the income while I look for something new.

•there's no shame in using a system you paid into. your employer paid unemployment taxes on your wages specifically for this situation

Just to echo everyone else - file immediately through the Washington ESD website. If you run into technical issues or need to speak with someone, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier actually works pretty well. I was skeptical too but it got me through to an agent when I couldn't get through the normal way.

•Good to hear another confirmation about that service. I'll keep it in mind if I have issues.

File today if possible. The longer you wait, the more money you lose. Washington ESD doesn't backdate claims to your separation date - your claim starts when you file, period. I learned this the hard way.

•Thanks everyone for all the advice. I'm convinced - filing tonight for sure.

•Good luck with your claim! Remember to keep track of your job search activities from day one since you'll need to report them on your weekly claims.
