Washington ESD - when can you file unemployment benefits and what are the deadlines?
I'm trying to figure out the timing for filing unemployment in Washington state. My last day of work was January 15th but I'm not sure if I should file right away or wait. I've heard different things about when you're supposed to apply and I don't want to mess up my claim by filing too early or too late. Does anyone know the rules about when you can file unemployment with Washington ESD?

You should file your claim as soon as possible after your last day of work. Washington ESD recommends filing within the first week after you become unemployed. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed and you can start receiving benefits if you're eligible.

•Thanks! So I can file right now even though it's only been a few days since my last day?

•Yes absolutely. There's no waiting period to file your initial claim in Washington.

Just be aware that even if you file right away, there's a one-week waiting period before you can receive your first payment. This is called the waiting week and it applies to everyone filing for regular UI benefits.

•Oh I didn't know about the waiting week. So even if I file today I won't get paid for the first week?

•Correct, the first week is unpaid but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week to keep your claim active.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I was trying to file my claim last month. Kept getting busy signals and getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made the whole process so much easier.

•How does that work exactly? Do they call for you or something?

•Yeah they basically handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

The important thing is to file as soon as you can but make sure you have all your information ready first. You'll need your Social Security number, your employment history for the past 18 months, and details about why you're unemployed. If you don't have everything ready it can slow down your application.

•What kind of employment history details do they need exactly?

•They want dates of employment, employer names and addresses, your wages, and the reason you left each job. It's worth gathering all this before you start the application.

•The online application at esd.wa.gov is really the best way to file. It might seem overwhelming but it walks you through each step. Take your time and don't rush through it.

One thing to keep in mind is that your benefit year starts the week you file your claim, not the week you became unemployed. So if you wait too long to file, you could be missing out on potential benefits from those earlier weeks.

•Wait so if I became unemployed last week but file this week, I lose last week's benefits?

•Not exactly lost, but your claim effective date will be when you file, not when you became unemployed. That's why filing quickly is important.

Also make sure youre actually eligible before filing. You need to have worked enough hours and earned enough wages in your base period. Washington ESD has specific requirements about this.

•How do I know if I've worked enough hours? I was only at my last job for about 8 months.

•They look at your wages over the past 5 quarters, not just your most recent job. If you worked other jobs in the past year and a half those count too.

The system is so backed up right now. I filed 3 weeks ago and my claim is still in adjudication. They say it can take 4-6 weeks to process claims that need additional review.

•Mine took 5 weeks to get approved. The waiting is the worst part but eventually it does get resolved.

•Did you ever get through to talk to anyone about the delay? I can't get past the phone system.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I'd definitely recommend trying Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent within 30 minutes instead of calling for days and getting nowhere.

•Is there a cost for using that service?

•Yeah there's a fee but honestly it was worth it for me to actually get my questions answered instead of wasting more time trying to call on my own.

Just remember that once you file your initial claim, you need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. Don't skip weeks even if you think you might have work coming up.

•What happens if I accidentally miss filing a weekly claim?

•You can usually file for missed weeks but it's better to stay on schedule. Set a reminder to file every Sunday.

also dont forget about the job search requirements! you have to be actively looking for work and keep a log of your job search activities. washington esd can ask to see this at any time

The whole process is honestly a nightmare. I've been trying to get through to resolve an issue with my claim for over a month. The phone system hangs up on you, the online messaging system is useless, and there's no other way to reach them.

•Have you tried calling first thing in the morning? I heard that's when you have the best chance of getting through.

•I've tried every time of day. The system is just overwhelmed.

For what it's worth, I used Claimyr last week and finally got to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my adjudication issue. The agent was actually really helpful once I got connected. Sometimes you just need to get past the phone system bottleneck.

•Maybe I should try that. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get my issue resolved.

•Yeah check out their demo video first to see how it works. It's pretty straightforward.

One more tip - make sure you answer all the questions on your weekly claims honestly. If you worked any hours or earned any money, even just a few dollars, you need to report it. Being dishonest can disqualify you from benefits.

•What if I do some freelance work while I'm unemployed? Do I need to report that too?

LilMama23
•Yes, all income needs to be reported. It might reduce your weekly benefit amount but it won't necessarily disqualify you completely.

Bottom line - file as soon as possible after your last day of work, have all your information ready, and be prepared for the process to take some time. Washington ESD is dealing with high volume so patience is key.
