How long until you can file for unemployment with Washington ESD after job loss?
Lost my job yesterday at a manufacturing plant in Spokane and wondering how soon I can actually file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. My supervisor said something about waiting periods but I'm not sure if that's accurate. I've never filed for unemployment before and really need to get the process started ASAP since I have rent due in two weeks. Can I file immediately or do I need to wait a certain amount of time? Also not sure if it matters that I was laid off vs fired - it was definitely a layoff due to reduced orders.

You can file your claim immediately! There's no waiting period to actually submit your application to Washington ESD. The sooner you file, the better because your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you lost your job. Go to esd.wa.gov and start the process today if possible.

•yes definitely file asap, I waited 3 days and wish I hadn't because those days just disappeared

The waiting period your supervisor mentioned is probably the one-week waiting period that used to exist, but that was eliminated during COVID and hasn't returned. You can file the same day you lose your job. Being laid off vs fired can matter for eligibility, but layoffs due to lack of work are typically approved without issues.

•That makes sense about the old waiting period. Good to know layoffs are usually straightforward.

•wait I thought there was still a waiting week? when did that change exactly

•The waiting week was suspended in April 2020 and Washington state made it permanent. No waiting week anymore.

I just went through this process last month and filing right away was the right call. However, be prepared that it might take a while to actually get through to Washington ESD if you need to talk to someone. I spent hours trying to call them when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you through to an actual agent - there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Good to know about potential delays. Hope mine goes smoothly but I'll keep that service in mind if I run into issues.

•How much does that Claimyr thing cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to Washington ESD

•I agree we shouldn't have to, but when you're dealing with bills and can't get through for weeks, it's worth it. Much cheaper than missing rent payments.

manufacturing layoffs are pretty common right now unfortunately. Make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file - dates of employment, reason for separation, your employer's info. Washington ESD will verify everything with your employer anyway but having it ready speeds things up

•I have my last paystub and employee handbook. Should I gather anything else specific?

•Your W2 from last year if you have it, and make sure you know your exact last day of work and gross wages for your highest quarter

Don't forget you'll need to do weekly claims every week to actually get paid, even if your initial claim is still being processed. I made that mistake my first time filing.

•Weekly claims - is that something I do online too?

Sarah Jones
•Yes, through the same Washington ESD website. You'll get instructions after you file your initial claim.

•And make sure you do them on time! Missing a weekly claim can cause delays in your payments.

i filed the day after i got laid off and it took 3 weeks to get my first payment but that was because of some verification issue. hopefully yours goes faster since manufacturing layoffs are pretty straightforward usually

•3 weeks seems long but I guess that's not too bad if it's just verification stuff

•Three weeks is actually pretty good these days! Mine took 6 weeks last year.

Make sure you start looking for work right away too. Washington ESD requires job search activities and you need to keep track of them. I think it's 3 job search activities per week but double check that.

•Good point about job searching. Do I need to prove I'm looking or just keep records?

Jordan Walker
•You keep your own records but Washington ESD can ask to see them anytime. Better to have detailed records than sorry.

•It's actually 3 job search activities per week, and you need to be able to provide details if requested during an audit.

The Washington ESD system has been much more stable lately compared to 2020-2021 when it was a total mess. Filing online should be pretty straightforward now.

•Yeah I remember hearing horror stories about the system crashing all the time back then

•That's reassuring to hear it's more stable now

One thing to watch out for - if you have any vacation pay or severance coming, that might affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD will want to know about any money you're getting from your employer after your last day of work.

Noah Ali
•No severance for me, but I do have about 40 hours of unused vacation time they're paying out. Will that be a problem?

•It might delay your first week of benefits, but it won't disqualify you. Just be honest about it when you file.

•Vacation payouts are treated as wages for the period they represent, so it could affect your first week or two depending on the amount.

I was in manufacturing too when I got laid off. The good news is Washington ESD is pretty familiar with manufacturing layoffs and they usually process them without too many questions since it's clearly lack of work, not misconduct.

•That's what I was hoping to hear. Did you have any issues with your claim?

•Nope, mine was approved within a week. Just had to do the weekly claims and job search stuff.

Word of advice - if you do run into problems reaching Washington ESD by phone (and you probably will), don't give up. I spent literally days trying to get through until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person. Worked like magic when I needed to resolve an issue with my claim status.

•Someone else mentioned that service too. Good to have as backup if needed.

•Is it legit though? Seems weird to pay someone to make a phone call for you

Mason Kaczka
•Totally legit. They don't ask for your personal info or anything, they just get you connected to Washington ESD and you handle your own business from there.

Just wanted to add - don't stress too much about the process. I know losing your job is scary but Washington's unemployment system is pretty good once you get through the initial filing. Most manufacturing layoffs get approved without issues.

One last tip - when you file, make sure you have a quiet place and good internet connection. The application takes about 30-45 minutes and you don't want to get kicked out halfway through and have to start over.

•Good thinking. I'll make sure to set aside enough time and do it when the house is quiet.

The fact that you're asking these questions shows you're being responsible about it. File today if you can, start your job search, and keep good records. You'll be fine!
