How long after unemployment can you file again - Washington ESD waiting period?
My unemployment benefits ran out about 8 months ago and I just got laid off from my new job. I'm trying to figure out if there's a waiting period before I can file a new claim with Washington ESD? I know some states have rules about how long you have to wait between claims but I can't find clear info on Washington's website. Has anyone been through this situation? Do I need to wait a full year or can I file right away since I worked for several months?

You can file a new claim right away in Washington! There's no waiting period between claims as long as you've worked and earned wages since your last claim ended. The key is that you need to have earned enough wages in your new base period to qualify for benefits.

•That's a relief! I worked for about 8 months so I should have enough wages. Do I file a new claim or reopen my old one?

•You'll need to file a completely new claim since your benefit year has expired. The system will automatically use your most recent wages to calculate your new weekly benefit amount.

same thing happened to me last year, no waiting period at all. just make sure you have all your employer info ready when you file online

•Good to know! Did your benefit amount change much from your previous claim?

Washington ESD doesn't have a mandatory waiting period between claims, but you do need to meet the wage requirements for a new benefit year. Since you worked 8 months, you should definitely qualify. The important thing is filing as soon as possible after becoming unemployed to avoid any gaps in potential benefits.

•I've been trying to call Washington ESD for two weeks to ask about this exact thing but can never get through! The phone system is impossible.

•Yeah the phone lines are brutal. I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to ESD agents automatically. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. At this point I'll try anything to actually talk to someone at ESD.

Wait I'm confused - I thought you had to wait a full year between claims? That's what my coworker told me when I got laid off.

•Your coworker might be thinking of other states or maybe confusing the benefit year length with waiting periods. In Washington, you can file a new claim anytime as long as you've worked since your last claim.

•Oh that makes sense. I was worried I'd have to wait until next year to file again if I lose my current job.

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO CONFUSE PEOPLE! They make it so hard to find basic information about filing new claims. I had to dig through like 20 pages on their website just to figure out the wage requirements.

•Tell me about it. Why can't they just have a simple FAQ that explains this stuff clearly?

•Because then people might actually get their benefits without jumping through hoops!

Just to clarify the wage requirements - you need to have earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period, and your total base period wages need to be at least 680 times your weekly benefit amount. Since you worked 8 months, you should easily meet this threshold.

I filed a new claim about 6 months after my previous benefits ended and had no issues. The online system walked me through everything pretty clearly. Just make sure you have your Social Security card and employment history ready.

•How long did it take for your new claim to get approved?

•About 2 weeks, though I think it depends on whether they need to verify your employment or not.

wait can you file online or do you have to call? I keep seeing conflicting info about this

•You can definitely file online through the SecureAccess Washington portal. It's much easier than trying to call and wait on hold for hours.

Update - I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked! Got through to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day redialing. They confirmed there's no waiting period between claims and helped me understand my specific situation.

•How much does that service cost? I'm desperate to talk to someone at ESD about my claim.

•I think it's worth it considering how much time it saves. Check out their website at claimyr.com - they explain everything there.

•I'm skeptical of paying for something that should be free, but if it actually works...

For anyone reading this thread later - make sure you file your new claim in your first week of unemployment, not when you think you might run out of money. The waiting week still applies to new claims.

•Good point about the waiting week. I forgot about that part.

•Yeah the waiting week catches a lot of people off guard, especially if they're used to getting benefits right away from their previous claim.

This thread is exactly what I needed! I'm in the same boat - benefits ended last year and just got laid off again. Going to file my new claim this weekend.

One thing to keep in mind - if you're filing a new claim, you'll need to meet the job search requirements again. They changed some of the rules recently so make sure you understand what's required.

•What are the current job search requirements? I remember having to log activities but I'm not sure if that's still the same.

Cameron Black
•You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. Some people are exempt but most claimants have to do this.

•The WorkSourceWA website has all the details about job search requirements. It's actually not as bad as it sounds once you get into a routine.

I keep seeing people say there's no waiting period but I swear I read somewhere that you have to wait if you quit your job vs getting laid off? Or am I thinking of something else?

•You're thinking of disqualification periods, not waiting periods between claims. If you quit without good cause or get fired for misconduct, you might face a disqualification. But that's different from filing a new claim after your benefit year ends.

•Ah that makes sense. I was getting confused between the different types of waiting periods.

This whole system is so confusing. Why can't they just send you a letter explaining when you can file again instead of making everyone guess?

Maria Gonzalez
•Right? Like a simple notification that says 'your benefit year ended, here's how to file a new claim if you become unemployed again.

•Exactly! Would save everyone so much stress and confusion.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful responses! I'm feeling much more confident about filing my new claim now. Going to do it online this weekend and hopefully avoid the phone system entirely.
