Can I file a new unemployment claim after my benefits ended?

My unemployment benefits ran out about 2 months ago and I'm still looking for work. I've been doing some gig work here and there but nothing steady. Can I file a new unemployment claim with Washington ESD or do I need to wait a certain amount of time? I'm not sure if there's a waiting period or if I need to have worked a minimum number of hours since my last claim ended. Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, you can file a new claim but you'll need to meet the base period earnings requirements again. Washington ESD looks at your wages from the last 5 completed quarters to determine if you qualify. Since you mentioned doing gig work, make sure you have enough covered wages to establish a new benefit year.

Thanks! How do I know if my gig work counts as covered wages? Some of it was 1099 work.

0 coins

1099 work generally doesn't count unless you paid into the system as self-employed. You'd need W-2 wages or covered employment to qualify for regular UI benefits.

I was in the same boat last year. You can absolutely file a new claim but Washington ESD will review your work history since your last claim. The key is having enough qualifying wages in your base period. If you don't qualify for a new claim, they might be able to reopen your old one if there's any balance left.

0 coins

Did you have any issues when you filed your new claim? I'm worried about the application process being complicated.

0 coins

It was pretty straightforward actually. Just make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates, wages, employer details. The online application walks you through everything.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about filing a new claim, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

0 coins

Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my situation.

0 coins

Yeah it's totally legitimate. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. Worth it when you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

0 coins

That sounds helpful! I might need to use that if I run into issues with my new claim application.

0 coins

UGH the whole system is so confusing! I had benefits end in March and I'm still not sure if I can file again. Why can't Washington ESD just make this stuff clearer on their website???

0 coins

I get the frustration, but the info is there if you know where to look. The key thing is whether you have sufficient wages in your base period for a new claim.

0 coins

But what exactly IS the base period? They use all this jargon that doesn't make sense to regular people!

0 coins

Just file online and see what happens. Worst case they deny it and you know where you stand.

0 coins

That's not great advice. It's better to understand the requirements first so you don't waste time on an application that won't qualify.

0 coins

fair point, i just meant sometimes its easier to apply and find out rather than try to figure out all the rules

0 coins

Update: I looked at my work history and I think I might have enough wages from a part-time job I had after my benefits ended. Should I include ALL employers from the last year and a half?

0 coins

Yes, include all employers. Washington ESD will determine which wages fall in your base period and count toward your claim. Better to include too much info than too little.

0 coins

Definitely include everything. I made the mistake of leaving out a short-term job and had to go back and update my application later.

0 coins

I'm so stressed about this whole process. What if they ask me why I didn't work more between claims? I was looking but the job market has been really tough.

0 coins

They won't penalize you for not finding work between claims as long as you meet the wage requirements for a new claim. Job search efforts aren't part of the initial eligibility determination.

0 coins

Oh okay, that's a relief. I was worried they'd think I wasn't trying hard enough to find work.

0 coins

The Washington ESD system is a joke. I've been trying to get answers about filing a new claim for months and can never get through on the phone. Their website is useless too.

0 coins

That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. After weeks of trying to call Washington ESD myself, it was worth paying to actually get connected to someone who could answer my questions.

0 coins

Maybe I should try that. I'm getting desperate for answers about my situation.

0 coins

Quick question - is there a deadline for filing a new claim after your benefits end? Like do I have to file within a certain time period?

0 coins

There's no specific deadline for filing a new claim, but you can only get benefits for weeks after you file. So the sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits if you qualify.

0 coins

Good to know, thanks! I was worried I'd missed some kind of window.

0 coins

Another question - if I file a new claim and get approved, will my weekly benefit amount be the same as my previous claim?

0 coins

Not necessarily. Your weekly benefit amount is calculated based on the wages in your base period for the new claim. If you earned less during that period, your benefits could be lower.

0 coins

Mine was actually slightly higher on my new claim because I had worked a better paying job before filing again.

0 coins

I filed a new claim last month and it's been in adjudication for 3 weeks now. Anyone else experience delays with new claims?

0 coins

Yes! Mine took almost a month to get approved. I think they're really backed up right now.

0 coins

If you need to check on your adjudication status, calling through Claimyr might help you actually reach someone at Washington ESD who can give you an update.

0 coins

I might have to do that. The waiting is killing me financially.

0 coins

Can you file a new claim online or do you have to call? I really hate talking on the phone if I can avoid it.

0 coins

You can definitely file online through the Washington ESD website. The online application is actually pretty user-friendly and walks you through all the required information.

0 coins

Perfect! That's so much better than having to call.

0 coins

What documents do I need to have ready when I file a new claim? I want to make sure I have everything before I start the application.

0 coins

You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months (dates, wages, reason for separation), and contact info for all your employers. Having your W-2s or pay stubs handy can help with accuracy.

0 coins

Thanks! I'll gather all that stuff before I start the application.

0 coins

Final update: I went ahead and filed my new claim online. It was actually pretty straightforward like everyone said. Now I just have to wait to see if I qualify based on my work history. Thanks everyone for the help!

0 coins

Good luck! Hope it works out for you. Remember to file your weekly claims even while it's being processed.

0 coins

Fingers crossed for you! Let us know how it goes.

0 coins

You've inspired me to finally file mine too. Thanks for asking all the questions I was wondering about!

0 coins

This thread has been super helpful. I'm in a similar situation and was totally confused about whether I could file again. Glad to know it's possible if you meet the requirements.

0 coins

That's what these forums are for! Always happy to help people navigate the unemployment system.

0 coins

One more thing to consider - if you do qualify for a new claim, you'll have to do the job search requirements again. Make sure you're prepared for that part too.

0 coins

Good point! I'd forgotten about the job search log requirement. Better start keeping track of my applications again.

0 coins

Yeah, they're pretty strict about that. Three job contacts per week minimum in most cases.

0 coins

The whole base period calculation thing is so confusing. I wish Washington ESD would just tell you upfront if you qualify before you spend time filling out the whole application.

0 coins

There are some online calculators that can give you a rough idea, but Washington ESD has access to wage records you might not have complete info on.

0 coins

That makes sense. I guess I'll just have to file and see what happens.

0 coins

Does anyone know if seasonal work counts toward qualifying for a new claim? I did some holiday retail work between my claims.

0 coins

Yes, seasonal work counts as long as it was covered employment where unemployment taxes were paid. It should show up in your wage records.

0 coins

Great! That might be just enough to push me over the threshold for qualifying.

0 coins

I'm curious about the timing. If I file a new claim now, when would it actually start? From this week or from when it gets approved?

0 coins

Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file your claim. But you won't get paid until your claim is approved and you've filed your weekly claims for those weeks.

0 coins

So I should file as soon as possible to avoid missing any potential weeks. Got it!

0 coins

This has been really informative! I had no idea you could file multiple claims. I thought once your benefits ran out, that was it.

0 coins

A lot of people don't realize that. As long as you've worked and earned enough wages since your last claim, you can establish a new benefit year.

0 coins

Same here! I only found out by accident when I called to ask about something else.
