Can you apply for unemployment after it runs out in Washington ESD?

My unemployment benefits just ran out last week after the full 26 weeks and I'm still job hunting. I've been applying everywhere but no luck yet. Can I file a new claim with Washington ESD or do I have to wait? I worked full time for 8 months before my layoff so I should have some earnings history. Just not sure if there's a waiting period or if I can start a new benefit year right away.

You can file a new claim if you have sufficient earnings in your new base period. Washington ESD looks at the last 5 completed calendar quarters to determine if you qualify. Since you worked 8 months before your layoff, you might have enough qualifying wages.

Thanks! Do I need to wait any specific amount of time or can I file immediately?

0 coins

You can file immediately. There's no waiting period between benefit years as long as you meet the earnings requirements.

Same situation happened to me 2 months ago. I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about filing a new claim but could never get through. Spent hours on hold every day.

0 coins

That's exactly what I'm worried about. Did you eventually get answers?

0 coins

Eventually yes, but it took forever. The phone system is brutal.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me tons of time when I needed to check my claim status.

0 coins

Interesting, never heard of that before. Is it legit?

0 coins

Yeah it's real. They basically help you navigate the phone system and get connected to an actual person instead of sitting on hold forever.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost though?

0 coins

I'd rather not discuss pricing here but it was worth it for me given how much time I was wasting trying to call on my own.

0 coins

Wait, I'm confused. Don't you automatically get extended benefits or something when regular unemployment runs out? I thought there were additional programs.

0 coins

Extended benefits depend on the state's unemployment rate. Washington doesn't currently have extended benefits available. The pandemic programs like PEUC ended in 2021.

0 coins

Oh I didn't realize those programs were gone. That sucks.

0 coins

Make sure you meet the earnings requirement for a new benefit year. You need wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period and total wages of at least 680 times the minimum wage.

0 coins

How do I calculate that? The minimum wage thing is confusing.

0 coins

For 2025, minimum wage in Washington is $16.28, so you'd need at least $11,070 in total wages during your base period. But the exact calculation can be tricky.

0 coins

this is why the unemployment system is so messed up, they make it impossible to get help when you need it most

0 coins

I feel you. Been there myself and it's so stressful when you're already worried about money.

0 coins

exactly! and then they wonder why people get frustrated

0 coins

To be clear about the process: you file a new initial claim online through the Washington ESD website. They'll automatically check your earnings history and determine if you qualify for a new benefit year. If approved, your weekly benefit amount might be different based on your more recent earnings.

0 coins

That makes sense. Do I need to do anything special since I just finished a previous claim?

0 coins

Nope, just file like normal. The system will recognize your previous claim history but treat this as a fresh application.

0 coins

I went through this exact situation last year. Filed a new claim right after my benefits ran out and was approved within 2 weeks. Had to do the whole job search requirements again though.

0 coins

Good to know it worked out! Did your benefit amount change much?

0 coins

It was actually a bit higher because I had more recent earnings to base it on.

0 coins

Just be prepared for the job search requirements to kick in immediately. You'll need to register with WorkSource WA and start documenting your job search activities right away.

0 coins

I'm already registered with WorkSource from my previous claim. Does that carry over?

0 coins

Yes, your WorkSource registration should still be active, but make sure your resume and profile are up to date.

0 coins

One thing to watch out for - if you don't qualify for a new regular claim, you might be eligible for a reduced benefit amount on something called a transitional claim. But that's usually not as much money.

0 coins

I didn't know that was even an option. How do you find out about those alternative programs?

0 coins

Washington ESD will automatically check for all programs you might qualify for when you file. They'll let you know what's available.

0 coins

honestly the whole thing is such a headache. I remember when my benefits ran out I was so stressed about whether I could reapply and how long it would take

0 coins

The uncertainty is the worst part! At least now there's more info online than there used to be.

0 coins

Another option if you can't get through by phone - try using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used it when I had questions about my base period earnings and it actually worked. Got connected to a Washington ESD rep within like 20 minutes instead of the usual 3-hour wait.

0 coins

That might be worth trying if I run into issues with my new claim. Thanks for the real-world feedback!

0 coins

I'm always skeptical of third-party services but if it actually works...

0 coins

I was skeptical too but got desperate after weeks of trying to call. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human being who can look at your specific situation.

0 coins

Don't forget you can also check your eligibility before filing by looking at your wage history in your eServices account. That way you'll know ahead of time if you have enough earnings.

0 coins

That's smart. I should probably do that first before filing anything.

0 coins

Definitely. It's under the 'View Wage Information' section in your account.

0 coins

Word of advice - if you do file a new claim, keep doing your job search activities even before you get approved. Washington ESD can ask for that information retroactively and you don't want to be caught without documentation.

0 coins

Good point. I've been job searching anyway but I should make sure I'm logging everything properly.

0 coins

Yeah, they're pretty strict about the job search requirements these days.

0 coins

I had a friend who waited too long to file after her benefits ran out and missed out on like 3 weeks of potential payments. Don't procrastinate on this.

0 coins

Oh no, that would be awful. I'll file this week for sure.

0 coins

You can't backdate unemployment claims very far, so timing definitely matters.

0 coins

Last thing - when you file, make sure you have your Social Security card and recent pay stubs handy even though you might not need them right away. Sometimes they ask for additional documentation during the review process.

0 coins

Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone! I feel much more prepared now.

0 coins

Good luck with your new claim! Hope it goes smoothly and you find a job soon.
