How long between unemployment claims - Washington ESD waiting period?

I was laid off from my warehouse job in January and collected unemployment for about 4 months before finding new work. Unfortunately that job didn't work out and I was let go again last week. I'm wondering how long I need to wait between unemployment claims in Washington? Is there a specific waiting period with Washington ESD before I can file a new claim? I'm really stressed about this because I need to start getting benefits ASAP to cover my rent and bills.

There's no waiting period between claims in Washington. You can file a new claim immediately after your previous benefit year ends or if you have a new separation from employment. Since you worked between claims, you should be able to file right away. The key is that you need to have earned enough wages in your new base period to qualify.

That's a relief! I was worried I'd have to wait months. Do I file a new claim or reopen my old one?

You'll need to file a completely new claim since you returned to work. Your previous claim is closed once you go back to work.

i think there might be a waiting period? my friend had to wait like 6 months or something before she could file again

Your friend might be thinking of a different situation. There's no mandatory waiting period between claims in Washington state.

0 coins

oh maybe she was talking about something else then

I had this exact situation happen to me last year. Filed in March, went back to work in July, then got laid off again in October. I was able to file a new claim immediately in October with no waiting period. Washington ESD will calculate your benefits based on your new base period which should include wages from both jobs.

How long did it take for your new claim to get approved?

0 coins

About 2 weeks for the initial determination. Make sure you have all your separation documents ready when you file.

The tricky part isn't the waiting period but actually getting through to Washington ESD to file your claim. I spent hours on hold trying to get someone on the phone when I needed to file my second claim. Eventually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an agent much faster - they have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

Interesting, I've never heard of that service. Did it actually work for you?

0 coins

Yeah it worked great. Saved me probably 4-5 hours of calling and getting disconnected. They basically call for you and connect you when an agent picks up.

How much does something like that cost? Seems like it could be expensive

It was worth it for me since I was losing my mind trying to get through on my own. Much better than wasting entire days calling.

THERE IS NO WAITING PERIOD! People keep spreading this myth but it's completely wrong. You can file immediately after being separated from your new job. The confusion comes from people mixing up Washington rules with other states that DO have waiting periods.

Thank you for clarifying this! I was getting worried reading some of these responses.

Yeah the misinformation about unemployment rules drives me crazy. Always check the official Washington ESD website for accurate info.

wait so if i worked for like 2 weeks between claims i can still file again? i thought you had to work for a certain amount of time

There's no minimum time you have to work between claims. As long as you were separated from the job (not your fault), you can file for UI benefits.

oh wow that's good to know thanks

The real question is whether you'll qualify for benefits on your new claim. If you only worked a short time between claims, your benefit amount might be lower because it's based on wages in your base period. You need to check if you have enough qualifying wages.

0 coins

I worked for about 3 months at decent wages, so hopefully that helps my benefit calculation.

That should definitely help. The base period looks at your wages from the previous 12-15 months, so both jobs should count.

This happened to my brother too - he was worried about some waiting period but there isn't one. He filed online and got his first payment within 2 weeks. The key is filing as soon as possible after your separation date.

0 coins

That's encouraging to hear! I'll file today then.

0 coins

Definitely do it today. Don't wait because you can't backdate benefits very far.

I'm in a similar boat - got laid off again after going back to work for 6 months. Been trying to call Washington ESD for 3 days straight and can't get through. The phone system is absolutely terrible.

Have you tried calling right at 8am when they open? That's usually the best time.

•

Yeah I've tried that. Still getting busy signals or getting disconnected after being on hold for hours.

0 coins

This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. They handle all the calling frustration for you and get you connected to an actual person.

Just to be 100% clear - Washington state has NO waiting period between unemployment claims. You can file immediately after separation from any job. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise because it's just not true.

This is correct. I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. No waiting period in Washington.

Thanks everyone for the clarification. I feel much better about filing right away now.

the only thing you might have to wait for is if your claim goes into adjudication for some reason. that can take weeks to resolve but thats different from a waiting period between claims

0 coins

What would cause adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

usually happens if theres questions about why you were separated from your job or if you have earnings to report. might not happen to you

I've filed 3 different unemployment claims over the past 5 years due to layoffs in my industry. Never had to wait between any of them. Filed immediately each time and got benefits within 2-3 weeks.

0 coins

That's really helpful to know. Sounds like I should be fine filing right away.

•

Absolutely. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits. Don't wait around thinking there's some rule about waiting periods.

0 coins

Make sure when you file your new claim that you report the wages from your recent job correctly. That's super important for your benefit calculation and to avoid any issues later.

0 coins

Good point. I have all my pay stubs from the recent job so I should be able to report everything accurately.

0 coins

Perfect. Having documentation ready makes the whole process smoother.

0 coins

One thing to keep in mind is that your weekly benefit amount might be different on your new claim compared to your first claim, depending on the wages in your new base period. But there's definitely no waiting period to worry about.

0 coins

That makes sense. I'm hoping the recent job wages will actually increase my benefit amount.

0 coins

It very well could! Higher wages in the base period generally mean higher weekly benefits.

Bottom line: File immediately, no waiting period required. I learned this the hard way by waiting 2 weeks thinking I had to, and that was 2 weeks of benefits I lost out on.

0 coins

Wow, I'm glad I asked then. I was thinking about waiting a few days but I'll file today instead.

Smart move. Every day you wait is money you're not getting.
