How does filing for unemployment work in Washington state - complete beginner here
I just got laid off yesterday from my job at a manufacturing plant and I've never filed for unemployment before. I keep hearing about Washington ESD but I'm completely lost on how this whole process actually works. Do I need to file right away? What information do I need to gather? Is there a waiting period before I get paid? I'm really stressed about my bills and need to understand the steps. Can someone walk me through how filing for unemployment actually works from start to finish?

First thing - don't panic! You should file as soon as possible after losing your job. Go to esd.wa.gov and create an account. You'll need your SSN, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. The application takes about 30-45 minutes to complete.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic info about where I worked?

•Just the basic employment info is fine for the initial application. They might ask for wage records later if needed.

After you file your initial claim, there's typically a one-week waiting period before benefits start. You'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting paid - this is super important! Each Sunday you report if you worked, looked for work, and if you were able and available for work that week.

•What happens if I forget to file a weekly claim one week?

•You can still file it late but you might not get paid for that week. Washington ESD is pretty strict about the weekly filing deadlines.

•I missed a week once and had to call to get it sorted out. Was a hassle but they did pay me eventually.

One thing nobody mentions is how hard it can be to reach Washington ESD by phone if you have questions. I spent weeks trying to get through last year when my claim got stuck. Recently discovered claimyr.com which actually helped me connect with an agent - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. No scam, they just help you get through the phone system when Washington ESD is swamped with calls.

•The phone lines are definitely brutal. I've heard good things about that service from other people too.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements! In Washington you need to make 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. You can do this through WorkSource or on your own, but you MUST document everything.

•Do online applications count as job search contacts?

•Yes, as long as you're applying for suitable work. Keep screenshots or confirmation emails as proof.

ugh the whole system is such a nightmare. i filed 3 weeks ago and my claim is still pending adjudication with no explanation. cant get anyone on the phone to tell me whats wrong

•Adjudication can take time, especially if there are any questions about your separation from work. Did you quit or were you laid off?

•i was laid off for lack of work. no idea why its taking so long

•This is exactly the kind of situation where claimyr.com helps - when you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD to find out what's holding up your claim.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit right away in your account. Paper checks take forever and can get lost in the mail. I learned this the hard way.

•Good point! How long does it usually take to get the first payment?

•If everything goes smoothly, about 2-3 weeks from when you file. But that's IF there are no issues with your claim.

Also be prepared for your claim to possibly go into adjudication if there's anything unusual about your job separation. This can add weeks to the process while they investigate.

•What counts as unusual? I was just laid off due to company downsizing.

•That should be straightforward. Adjudication usually happens if you quit, were fired for misconduct, or there are questions about your availability to work.

Whatever you do, don't lie on your application or weekly claims. Washington ESD will eventually catch it and you'll have to pay everything back plus penalties. I've seen it happen to people.

•Definitely planning to be 100% honest. Not worth the risk!

•Smart approach. The penalties for UI fraud are no joke in Washington.

Remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or you'll owe when you file your tax return next year.

•Oh wow, I didn't think about taxes. Thanks for the heads up!

•Yep, learned that lesson the hard way a few years back. Better to have them withhold 10% than get hit with a big tax bill later.

The Washington ESD website can be confusing at first but once you get the hang of it, filing weekly claims only takes a few minutes. Just make sure you file every week even if you're not sure about something.

•What day of the week should I file?

•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I usually do mine Sunday evening to get it out of the way.

been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and honestly the hardest part is just getting someone at washington esd on the phone when you have questions. the automated system is useless for anything complicated

•This is why I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Saved me hours of calling and getting nowhere.

•might have to look into that. im tired of burning up my phone battery trying to get through

One more thing - keep all your documentation! Save emails from Washington ESD, keep your job search log updated, and screenshot important pages in your account. You never know when you might need proof of something.

•Great advice! I'll start a folder on my computer for all this stuff.

•Smart move. Organization really helps if any issues come up later.

The process isn't as scary as it seems once you get started. Just take it one step at a time and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
