How do I reopen my unemployment claim with Washington ESD after stopping benefits?

I stopped filing my weekly claims back in August because I thought I found steady work, but that job ended up being temporary and now I'm unemployed again. When I try to log into my Washington ESD account, it shows my claim as inactive. Do I need to file a completely new claim or can I reopen the old one? I'm worried about losing my benefit year since it doesn't expire until March. Has anyone been through this process before?

You should be able to reopen your existing claim as long as you're still within your benefit year. Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look for a 'Reopen Claim' option on your unemployment dashboard. Don't file a new claim unless Washington ESD tells you to.

I don't see a reopen option anywhere on my dashboard. Should I be looking somewhere specific?

0 coins

Sometimes it takes a day or two for the option to appear. If you don't see it by tomorrow, you might need to call Washington ESD.

I had the same thing happen to me last year. You definitely want to reopen rather than file new because you'll keep your original weekly benefit amount. Filing a new claim might lower your benefits if your recent wages were less.

0 coins

That's exactly what I was worried about! The temp job paid way less than my previous job.

0 coins

Good point about the benefit amount. I made that mistake and ended up with $200 less per week.

If you can't get through to Washington ESD by phone (which is likely), I recently discovered Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help you get connected to actual Washington ESD agents without sitting on hold for hours. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth trying if you need to talk to someone about reopening your claim.

How much does that service cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

0 coins

It's definitely worth checking out their site for pricing. For me, getting through to resolve my claim issue was worth whatever it cost versus being stuck in limbo.

0 coins

I'll look into this if I can't figure out the reopen process online. Thanks for the suggestion!

0 coins

Make sure you have documentation of when your temporary job ended. Washington ESD will want proof that you're unemployed through no fault of your own when you reopen.

0 coins

I have the termination paperwork that shows it was end of contract. Should that be enough?

0 coins

Yes, that should work perfectly. Keep copies of everything you submit.

0 coins

ugh the Washington ESD system is so confusing! I've been trying to figure out the same thing for weeks. Why can't they make this stuff more straightforward??

0 coins

Tell me about it. Half the time their website is down for maintenance too.

0 coins

exactly! and when you finally get through it's like they're speaking a different language with all the adjudication and eligibility nonsense

Just wanted to add - when you do reopen, you'll need to serve a waiting week again unless you already served one on your original claim. Check your payment history to see if you had any unpaid weeks at the beginning.

0 coins

I think I did serve a waiting week when I first filed. How can I verify that?

0 coins

Look at your payment history in your Washington ESD account. The first week should show as 'Waiting Week' with no payment amount.

0 coins

Wait, I thought they eliminated waiting weeks during COVID?

0 coins

They temporarily waived them but waiting weeks came back in 2023 for regular unemployment claims.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't wait too long to reopen. I waited almost 3 weeks and it created all sorts of complications with my claim. Washington ESD acted like I was trying to commit fraud or something.

0 coins

Oh no, what kind of complications?

0 coins

They made me go through a whole interview process and provide extra documentation. It delayed my payments by over a month.

0 coins

That sounds like adjudication hell. I've been there and it's awful.

For anyone still struggling to reach Washington ESD about reopening claims, I'll mention Claimyr again because it really saved me when I was in a similar situation. Their service got me connected to an agent who walked me through the whole reopen process over the phone. Way better than trying to guess what to do online.

0 coins

I'm usually skeptical of services like this but honestly the Washington ESD phone system is impossible. Might be worth it.

0 coins

At this point I'm willing to try anything. The online portal isn't giving me clear answers.

Just reopened mine last month after being off benefits for 6 weeks. The process was actually pretty smooth once I found the right link. Make sure you're looking under 'Manage Claims' not just the main dashboard.

0 coins

Oh! I was looking in the wrong place. Let me check under Manage Claims right now.

0 coins

Yeah it's not super obvious where they put it. Once you find it though, it's just a few questions about why you stopped filing and when you became unemployed again.

0 coins

This is helpful! I've been looking everywhere for that option.

0 coins

Be prepared for them to ask about any work you did between when you stopped filing and now. Even part-time or gig work needs to be reported when you reopen.

0 coins

Good point. I did some DoorDash deliveries for a few weeks. Do I need to report that?

0 coins

Yes, definitely report all earnings. It's better to over-report than under-report with Washington ESD.

0 coins

The Washington ESD customer service line is useless. I called 47 times yesterday and got hung up on every single time. This system is broken.

0 coins

47 times?? That's insane. No wonder people are looking for alternative ways to reach them.

0 coins

This is exactly why I started using Claimyr. The regular phone system is completely overwhelmed.

0 coins

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims once you reopen, even if the first few weeks show as pending or under review. Missing weeks will just create more problems.

0 coins

How do I know when I can start filing weekly claims again? Will I get an email or something?

0 coins

Usually you can start filing immediately after reopening. Check your claim status daily to see when it becomes active again.

0 coins

I'm dealing with this exact situation right now. Found the reopen option under Manage Claims like someone mentioned earlier. Still waiting to see if it goes through without issues.

0 coins

Keep us posted on how it goes! I'm about to try the same thing.

0 coins

Same here. Fingers crossed the process is straightforward.

0 coins

One thing to watch out for - if your benefit year expired while you weren't filing, you'll have to file a completely new claim instead of reopening. Check your benefit year end date in your account.

0 coins

Mine doesn't expire until March so I should be good. Thanks for the heads up though!

0 coins

This happened to me and I had to start completely over. Lost 2 weeks of benefits figuring it out.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I had success using Claimyr when I needed to sort out my reopened claim that got stuck in adjudication. The agent they connected me with was able to see exactly what was holding things up and fixed it during the call.

0 coins

How long did it take them to connect you to someone?

0 coins

It was way faster than trying to call directly. Maybe 20 minutes total instead of hours of busy signals.

0 coins

UPDATE: Found the reopen option under Manage Claims! It was hidden in a submenu. Submitted the request and now it shows as 'pending review.' Hopefully this works without needing to call anyone. Thanks everyone for the help!

0 coins

Awesome! Mine took about 3 business days to get approved after I submitted it.

0 coins

Great news! Make sure to keep checking your account for any additional requirements they might ask for.

0 coins

Glad you found it! The Washington ESD website design definitely doesn't make it easy to find these options.

0 coins

Congrats on finding the reopen option! Just a heads up - while your request is pending review, start gathering all your documentation (termination papers, any work you did between claims, etc.) in case they ask for additional verification. Also, once it's approved, you can usually start filing your weekly claims right away even if the first payment takes a bit longer to process. The key is not to let any weeks go unfiled once you're active again. Good luck!
