How to file a new unemployment claim after old one expires - Washington ESD process?
My benefit year ended last month and I'm still unemployed. I've been trying to figure out how to start a new claim with Washington ESD but the online system is confusing me. When I log into my account it just shows my old expired claim. Do I need to file a completely new application or is there a way to extend/renew my existing claim? I've been out of work for over a year now and really need to get benefits going again. Has anyone been through this process recently?

You'll need to file a brand new initial claim since your benefit year expired. The old claim can't be extended or renewed - Washington ESD requires a fresh application when your benefit year runs out.

•Do I use the same online portal or is there a different process for reapplying?

•Same portal at esd.wa.gov - just click on 'Apply for Benefits' like you did the first time. Your old claim info will still be in the system but won't affect your new application.

I just went through this exact situation 2 months ago. You definitely have to start completely over with a new claim. Make sure you have your employment history for the past 18 months ready because they'll ask for all your employers again.

•Did you have any issues with the wage verification? I'm worried they won't find all my employment records.

•It took about 3 weeks for them to process my wages. One employer from 2 years ago didn't report properly so I had to submit pay stubs manually.

Been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about this same thing! Their phone lines are constantly busy and when I do get through I just get hung up on. So frustrating when you need answers about something this important.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it on claimyr.com and it actually got me through to a real person at Washington ESD. They have this demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) that shows how it works. Basically calls for you and waits on hold until an agent picks up.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - I was skeptical too but it got me connected in about 45 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. Worth trying when you're stuck like this.

MAKE SURE you file your new claim the week after your benefit year ends!! I waited 3 weeks thinking I had more time and they made me start my benefit year from when I actually filed, not when I should have filed. Lost out on 3 weeks of potential benefits.

•Oh no, I think I might have already missed that window. My benefit year ended 3 weeks ago and I'm just now trying to file.

•You might still be okay but definitely file ASAP. Call them to ask about backdating if you need to.

The whole system is such a mess. Why can't they just automatically transition you to a new claim when your year expires? Every other state I know makes this process way easier.

•It's because they need to recalculate your benefits based on your most recent work history. If you worked during your previous claim, that could change your weekly benefit amount.

•Still seems like they could streamline it instead of making people jump through hoops when they're already struggling.

Quick question - do you have to do the whole job search requirement thing again with a new claim? I remember that being a pain the first time around.
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•Yes, all the same requirements apply - 3 job search activities per week and you need to register with WorkSource again even if you're already in their system.

•Ugh, WorkSource registration was such a nightmare. Guess I better get that done before I file.

I'm in the same boat but haven't filed yet because I'm not sure if I'll qualify again. I only worked part-time for 6 months during my last benefit year. Anyone know if that's enough to establish a new claim?

•You need to have earned at least $3,850 in your base period to qualify for benefits. Washington ESD will look at your highest quarter and you need at least 680 hours of work or earnings in at least 2 quarters.

Miles Hammonds
•That sounds complicated. Is there a way to check if I qualify before filing the whole application?
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•Not really - you have to file the claim and let them determine eligibility based on your wage records. But if you worked 6 months part-time you're probably okay.

does anyone know how long it takes to get approved for a new claim? my rent is due next week and im getting desperate

•Mine took about 2-3 weeks to get my first payment. If everything goes smoothly and they don't need additional info it could be faster.

•3 weeks?? i cant wait that long. is there any way to speed it up?

Word of warning - if you had any overpayments or issues with your previous claim, they might hold up your new claim until those are resolved. Happened to my neighbor and delayed her benefits for 6 weeks.

•How would I know if I have any outstanding issues? My account doesn't show anything but I want to be sure.

•You'd probably have gotten letters about it, but you could call to check. That's another thing Claimyr might help with if you can't get through on your own.

The monetary determination letter is key - that's what tells you your weekly benefit amount for the new claim. Mine was different from my first claim because I had worked different jobs with different wages.

•How long did it take to get your monetary determination? I want to know what to expect.

Ella Harper
•About 10 days after I filed my claim. Came in the mail and also showed up in my online account.

Just want to add that you should file your weekly claims starting the week you apply, even before you get approved. Don't wait for approval or you'll miss out on those weeks.
0 coins
Emma Olsen
•Really? I thought you had to wait until they approved your claim before filing weekly claims.
0 coins
PrinceJoe
•Nope, file right away. If you're approved they'll pay you for those weeks retroactively. If you don't file them you can't get paid for those weeks later.

This whole thread is making me realize I need to get moving on my application. My year expired last month and I keep putting it off because the process seems overwhelming.

Lucas Lindsey
•Don't wait any longer! The sooner you file the sooner you can start getting benefits again. It's really not as complicated as it seems once you get started.

•You're right, I'm going to do it tonight. Thanks for the motivation everyone.

One more tip - keep copies of everything you submit with your new claim application. If there are any issues later you'll need that documentation to resolve them quickly.

•Good point. I learned that lesson the hard way with my first claim when they asked me to resubmit something I'd already sent.

•Exactly! Screenshot confirmation pages, save copies of uploaded documents, print important emails. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

Has anyone had success getting their new claim expedited due to financial hardship? I'm about to lose my apartment and wondering if there's any way to speed up the process.

•I haven't heard of expediting unemployment claims, but definitely call Washington ESD to explain your situation. That's where Claimyr really helped me - got me through to someone who could actually look at my case instead of just getting generic responses.

•I'll check out that service you mentioned. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get through to a real person.

Make sure your address is updated in the system before you file your new claim! I moved during my benefit year and forgot to update it, which caused delays in getting my determination letter.
0 coins
Emma Olsen
•How do you update your address? Through the same online portal?
0 coins
Sophie Footman
•Yes, you can update it in your eServices account under personal information. Do it before filing your new claim to avoid any mail delivery issues.

this is all so confusing why cant washington esd just have clearer instructions on their website about filing new claims after expiration
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•I agree their website could be more user-friendly. The information is there but it's scattered across different pages and hard to find when you need it.

Connor Rupert
•exactly! and when you call for help you can never get through to anyone who can actually help

Don't forget about the waiting week! Even with a new claim you might have to serve a waiting week before benefits start, depending on your situation.
0 coins
Emma Olsen
•Wait, what's a waiting week? I don't remember having one with my first claim.
0 coins
Molly Hansen
•It's the first week of your claim where you file but don't get paid. Not everyone has to serve it but it depends on various factors. Washington ESD will tell you when you get approved.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing mentioned earlier - I tried it yesterday and actually got through to Washington ESD in about 30 minutes. Agent was able to answer my questions about filing a new claim and even helped me understand why my previous claim ended when it did.

Austin Leonard
•Wow, really? I'm definitely going to try that then. 30 minutes beats the 4 hours I spent on redial yesterday with no luck.

•Yeah it was worth it just to get real answers instead of guessing. The agent explained everything clearly and even walked me through what documents I'd need for my new application.
