Can I file for unemployment again with Washington ESD after my benefit year expired?

My benefit year ended about 6 months ago and I've been working part-time since then but the hours got cut drastically last month. Can I file for unemployment again with Washington ESD or do I have to wait? I'm confused about whether I need to start a completely new claim or if there's some kind of waiting period. The website isn't very clear about this situation.

Yes, you can definitely file a new claim! Since your benefit year ended, you'll need to file a completely new initial claim, not just reopen your old one. As long as you've worked and earned enough wages since your last claim, you should qualify.

Do you know how much I need to have earned? I've been working but only part-time for about 5 months.

0 coins

You need to earn at least 680 hours of work or $5,265 in wages during your base period. The base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file.

I was in the exact same situation last year!! Had to file a new claim after my benefit year expired. The process was actually pretty straightforward once I figured out I needed to start completely over.

How long did it take to get approved? I'm worried about the waiting period.

Mine took about 2 weeks but I had all my employment info ready. Make sure you have pay stubs and employer contact info for all jobs in the last 18 months.

Just a heads up - if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your eligibility, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a live agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

How much does something like that cost? Seems like you shouldn't have to pay to talk to ESD.

I get that sentiment but honestly after spending 3 days trying to get through on my own, it was worth it to get my questions answered quickly. The phone system is just overwhelmed.

WAIT - are you sure you can file again? I thought there was some rule about having to work a certain amount between claims or something???

0 coins

You're thinking of the work search requirements. As long as the benefit year ended and you've worked since then, you can file a new claim. The work requirements I mentioned above apply.

0 coins

ok good because I was worried I was stuck until next year or something

The Washington ESD website is terrible for explaining this stuff clearly. You basically start over like you never filed before. New application, new benefit year, new weekly benefit amount calculation based on your recent wages.

0 coins

Will the new benefit amount be based on the part-time work or the previous full-time job from before?

0 coins

It's based on your base period wages, which would include your recent part-time work. So if you were making less, your weekly benefit might be lower than your previous claim.

Thanks everyone! This is really helpful. I was worried I'd have to wait until 2026 or something. Going to gather my pay stubs and file this weekend.

Good luck! Don't forget to keep track of your job search activities from day one, even while your claim is processing.

Just curious - why did you wait 6 months to ask about this? You could have filed as soon as your hours got cut.

0 coins

I thought I had to wait until my benefit year would have normally reset. I didn't realize I could file a new claim anytime after it expired if I had worked.

0 coins

ahh that makes sense, the whole system is confusing

One more thing to keep in mind - if you're still working part-time while collecting, you'll need to report those hours and wages on your weekly claims. You can earn up to your weekly benefit amount plus $5 before they start reducing your benefits.

0 coins

Good point! I'll definitely need to track that carefully. Thanks for the reminder.

Does anyone know if there's a limit to how many times you can file unemployment? Like if this is my third time in 5 years, will that be a problem?

0 coins

No limit as long as you meet the eligibility requirements each time. You need qualifying wages and hours, and you need to be unemployed through no fault of your own.

0 coins

ok cool, wasn't sure if they flagged people who file multiple times

0 coins

Man the whole benefit year thing is so confusing. Why can't they just let you file whenever you need it?

0 coins

It's to prevent people from filing multiple claims and getting more than 26 weeks of benefits in a year. Each benefit year gives you up to 26 weeks maximum.

Update on the Claimyr thing - I used it again last week to check on a different issue and got through to ESD in like 10 minutes. Way better than the 2+ hour wait times I was getting before.

0 coins

might have to try that, I've been trying to call about my job search requirements for days

0 coins

Just make sure when you file your new claim that you list ALL your employers from the last 18 months, even the part-time ones. ESD will verify with them anyway and it's better to be upfront.

0 coins

Good advice! I have info for 2 employers since my last claim so I'll make sure to include both.

This thread is super helpful. I'm in a similar situation but my benefit year doesn't expire until March. Sounds like I need to wait until then to file a new claim even though my hours got cut?

0 coins

No! If your hours got cut, you should file now. You don't need to wait for your benefit year to expire if you qualify for a new claim due to reduced work.

0 coins

oh wow I had no idea, thanks! filing today then

0 coins

The key thing to remember is that each benefit year is separate. Once it ends, it's like starting fresh with Washington ESD. Your previous claim history doesn't really matter for the new one.

0 coins

That's actually kind of nice, gives you a clean slate

0 coins

Quick question - do I need to do the WorkSource registration again for a new claim or does that carry over?

0 coins

You'll need to register again if it's been more than a year since your last registration. It's part of the new claim process.

0 coins

Filed my claim this morning! The application was pretty straightforward since I knew what to expect from last time. Now just waiting for them to process it. Fingers crossed!

0 coins

Awesome! Hope it goes smoothly for you. Keep an eye on your account for any requests for additional information.

0 coins

If you need to call them about anything during processing, remember that Claimyr option I mentioned. Really saves time.

0 coins

Great to see another successful filing! Just remember everyone - even if you think you might not qualify, it's usually worth applying. Let Washington ESD make the determination rather than guessing.

0 coins

totally agree, I almost didn't apply last time because I thought I hadn't worked enough but I actually qualified

0 coins

This whole thread has been super educational. I didn't realize how much I didn't know about the benefit year rules and refiling. Thanks everyone!

0 coins

same here! I thought once your year expired you had to wait like a whole calendar year or something ridiculous

0 coins

One last tip - screenshot or print your confirmation page after filing. I've had issues before where the system didn't save my application properly and having that confirmation helped when I called.

0 coins

Good call! I did save the confirmation number just in case.

0 coins

Love seeing these success stories! The unemployment system seems scary but once you understand the rules it's actually pretty manageable. Good luck to everyone filing new claims!

0 coins

Exactly - most of the confusion comes from the ESD website not explaining things in plain English. Forums like this really help fill in the gaps.
