How to reapply for unemployment benefits - Washington ESD process confused
My unemployment claim expired last month and I still haven't found work. I need to reapply for unemployment benefits but I'm totally confused about the Washington ESD process. Do I start a completely new claim or is there some way to reopen my old one? I tried looking on the secure.esd.wa.gov website but it's not clear what I'm supposed to do. Has anyone been through this before? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and delay getting benefits.

You'll need to file a new initial claim since your benefit year ended. Go to secure.esd.wa.gov and click on 'File a New Claim' not the weekly claim filing. It's basically starting over with the whole process including the waiting week.

•So I can't just reactivate my old claim? That seems like a lot of extra work for something that should be simple.

•Nope, once your benefit year expires (52 weeks from when you first filed), you have to start fresh. It's annoying but that's how Washington ESD does it.

Make sure you have all your employment info ready for the last 18 months, not just from your most recent job. They'll ask for employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation for each job.

•18 months? I thought it was just the last year. Good thing you mentioned that!

•Yeah they look at your base period which goes back further. Better to have too much info than not enough.

I went through this same thing a few months ago and could NOT get through to anyone at Washington ESD to ask questions. Spent weeks calling and either getting busy signals or being disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person at ESD. They have this demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash waiting for benefits.

•It was worth it for me to get answers instead of wasting more time calling. The video explains everything better than I can.

•I might have to try that if I can't figure this out. The phone system is ridiculous.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you file your new claim right away. There's no gap coverage between your old claim ending and your new one starting. Every week you wait is a week of potential benefits lost.

•Wait, so if my claim expired 3 weeks ago, I've already lost 3 weeks of benefits?

•Unfortunately yes, unless you had some kind of valid reason for the delay. Washington ESD doesn't backdate new claims like they do for initial claims.

ugh this system is so backwards. why cant they just automatically extend claims for people who are still unemployed instead of making us jump through hoops again??

Giovanni Rossi
•Because they need to recalculate your benefit amount based on recent wages and verify you're still eligible. It's not just about extending time.

•still seems like they could streamline it somehow. everything with unemployment is needlessly complicated

When you file your new claim, you'll also need to register with WorkSource again if you haven't been keeping up with job search activities. They'll want to see that you've been actively looking for work even while your claim was expired.

•Do I need to show proof of job searches for the weeks my claim was expired?

Giovanni Rossi
•It's good to have documentation ready. They may ask about your job search efforts during the gap period.

Been there! One thing that tripped me up was thinking I could use my old PIN. You might need to set up new login credentials since your account gets deactivated after claim expiration.

•My SecureAccess Washington login still works, is that different from what you're talking about?

•SAW login is different from your ESD PIN. You'll find out when you try to file the new claim if you need a new PIN.

Pro tip: gather all your documents before you start the online application. It times out if you take too long and you'll have to start over. Have your Social Security card, ID, and employment records ready.

•How long does the application usually take to complete?

Jamal Brown
•Maybe 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready. Longer if you have to look up employer information.

What if your circumstances changed? Like if you were fired from your last job instead of laid off? Does that affect your new claim?
0 coins
Giovanni Rossi
•Yes, they'll evaluate your most recent separation. If you were fired for misconduct, it could affect your eligibility even if your previous claim was for a layoff.

•That's what I was worried about. Guess I'll need to be prepared to explain the situation.

Another thing about Claimyr - I used it again when I had questions about my new claim getting stuck in adjudication. Much better than trying to get through the regular phone lines. The ESD agent was actually helpful once I could reach them.

•I've heard good things about that service from other people too. Might be worth it just for the peace of mind.

•I was skeptical at first but after spending literally hours on hold with no success, I tried it and got through to someone in like 10 minutes. Pretty amazing actually.

how long does it take for the new claim to get processed? im already behind on rent and cant afford to wait weeks like last time
0 coins
Amara Oluwaseyi
•Usually 2-3 weeks for processing, plus you'll have a waiting week. So figure at least 3-4 weeks before you see money.

•great, so basically a month without income. this system is broken

Make sure your address and contact info is current when you file. If they need to mail you anything and it goes to an old address, it'll slow everything down.

•Good point, I moved since my last claim. Need to update that.

Remember that if you worked at all since your last claim ended, even part-time or temporary work, you need to report that on your new application. Don't try to hide it thinking it will hurt your claim.

•I did some gig work for like 2 weeks. Do I need to report that?
0 coins
Giovanni Rossi
•Yes, report all work. They'll find out anyway and it's better to be upfront about it.

Does anyone know if they still do the virtual job search workshops? I remember having to do those last time but wasn't sure if they're still required.

Jamal Brown
•They're still doing them, mostly online now. You'll probably get assigned to one after your claim is approved.

•Thanks, just wanted to be prepared for that requirement again.

What happens if you mess up something on the application? Can you go back and fix it or do you have to start completely over?

Zoe Kyriakidou
•Minor mistakes can usually be corrected by calling ESD, but major errors might require a new application. Better to double-check everything before submitting.

Liam McConnell
•That's what I figured. I'll be extra careful with the dates and employer info.

Update: I started my new application and it's asking for my previous claim number. Should I include that or leave it blank since it's expired?
0 coins
Giovanni Rossi
•Include it. They use that to link your claims in their system even though this is a new benefit year.

AstroAce
•Perfect, thanks. Almost done with the application now.

Good luck! I remember how stressful it was reapplying. Just take your time and don't rush through it.

•Thanks for all the help everyone. This thread has been way more helpful than the ESD website.

One last thing - keep copies of everything you submit. Screenshots of your application, confirmation numbers, all of it. You'll want that if there are any issues later.

AstroAce
•Already doing that! Learned that lesson the hard way last time.

•Smart! Having documentation saved me when they lost my initial application somehow.

For anyone else reading this later, I really can't recommend Claimyr enough if you run into issues. Getting through to ESD directly is nearly impossible, but having someone who can actually reach them makes all the difference when you have questions or problems.

Final update: Got my new claim submitted! Says it will take 2-3 weeks to process. Thanks everyone for walking me through this. Much less scary when you know what to expect.

•Awesome! Make sure you file your weekly claims even while it's processing.

•Will do. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly from here.
