How to refile for unemployment benefits after previous claim ended?
My benefit year ended last month and I'm still unemployed. I know I need to refile but I'm confused about the process. Do I start completely over on the Washington ESD website or is there a way to reopen my existing claim? I've been looking at esd.wa.gov but can't find clear instructions on refiling. Also wondering if my weekly benefit amount will change when I refile? Any help would be appreciated.

You'll need to file a completely new initial claim, not reopen the old one. Go to esd.wa.gov and click 'File a New Claim' like you did the first time. Your benefit amount might change based on your wages from the new base period they'll calculate.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait until after my benefit year officially ends or can I file early?

•You can file the new claim during the week your benefit year ends. Don't wait too long after it expires or you might have a gap in benefits.

Been through this twice now. The new claim process is exactly the same as your original filing. Make sure you have your employment history ready for the past 18 months, not just since your last claim started.

•Good point about the 18 months. I worked part-time during some of my claim period so I'll need to include those wages too.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I discovered it when I was having the same phone issues. It's at claimyr.com and they actually get you through to Washington ESD agents. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but willing to try anything at this point. Does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me when I needed to check on my adjudication status. Way better than spending hours redialing the same busy number.

MAKE SURE you file your new claim immediately when your benefit year ends. I waited two weeks thinking I had time and it created all sorts of complications with my job search requirements and payment timing.

•What kind of complications? I'm in a similar situation and want to avoid problems.

•They made me verify all my job search activities for the gap period even though I wasn't getting paid. Plus my first payment was delayed because of the timing issues.

The refiling process isn't too bad but be prepared for your benefit amount to potentially change. Mine went down by about $40 per week because I had some lower-wage work mixed in with my higher-paying job.

•That's what I'm worried about. I had to take some temporary lower-paying work during my claim period.

•Yeah they use all qualifying wages in their calculation so if you worked lower-wage jobs it can bring down your weekly benefit amount.

wait do you have to do the whole work search thing again when you refile? i thought maybe since you already proved you were looking for work they might skip that part

•No, job search requirements continue the same way. You still need to log 3 job search activities per week and be able and available for work.

•ugh ok thanks

One thing to watch out for - if you worked during your previous claim period, make sure all those wages were properly reported. Sometimes people forget to report part-time work and it can cause issues when they refile.

•I always reported my part-time work on my weekly claims. Should that be enough?

Diego Flores
•Yes that should be fine. Washington ESD has record of what you reported so it should all match up when they calculate your new base period.

Does anyone know if the waiting week applies again when you refile? I can't remember if that's only for your very first claim ever or every new benefit year.

Chloe Robinson
•There's no waiting week for refiling in Washington. The waiting week only applied to new claimants and they actually eliminated it completely in 2023.

•Oh good, thanks for clarifying that!

I'm going through this same process right now. Filed my new claim on Monday and it's already showing in my account. Much faster than I expected compared to my original claim filing last year.

CosmicCrusader
•That's encouraging! How long did your original claim take to process?

Aisha Mahmood
•My first claim took about 3 weeks because they had to verify my employment. This refiling was processed in 2 days since they already have all my employer information.

Pro tip: gather all your employer information before you start the refiling process. You'll need employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reasons for separation for each job in your base period.

•Good advice. I kept good records during my claim period so hopefully I have everything I need.

Update on the Claimyr thing - I tried it yesterday and actually got through to a Washington ESD agent in like 15 minutes. Agent confirmed I can file my new claim this week even though my benefit year doesn't technically end until Sunday.

•Wow that's amazing! I've been trying to get through for weeks about my own refiling questions.

•Yeah definitely worth trying if you need to talk to someone. Way better than the regular phone system.

Question about the base period calculation - do they use the same quarters as your original claim or do they shift forward to include more recent wages?
0 coins
Chloe Robinson
•They calculate a completely new base period based on when you file the new claim. So if you file now, they'll look at your wages from about 15 months ago through 3 months ago.

Yuki Kobayashi
•Thanks! So it's possible my benefit amount could go up if I had higher wages in the more recent quarters.
0 coins
Chloe Robinson
•Exactly. It works both ways - could go up or down depending on your wage history in the new base period.

I refiled about 6 months ago and the process was pretty straightforward. The only hiccup was that one of my employers from the base period had changed their business name, so Washington ESD had to verify that information before approving my claim.

CosmicCrusader
•How long did that verification take?

Carmen Vega
•About a week. They sent me a form to fill out with the employer's new information and then processed it pretty quickly after that.

Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims on your old claim until your benefit year actually ends. I made the mistake of stopping too early and missed out on a week of benefits.

•Good catch! I definitely don't want to lose any benefits I'm entitled to.

The Washington ESD website has a section about refiling but it's buried pretty deep in the help pages. Wish they made it more prominent since this is such a common situation.

•Agreed, their website organization could definitely be better. I always have trouble finding specific information.

Has anyone had issues with their job search log carrying over when they refile? I'm wondering if I need to start fresh or if my existing log continues.

Chloe Robinson
•Your job search activities in WorkSourceWA should carry over, but you'll want to make sure you're meeting the requirements continuously. There shouldn't be any gap in your search activities.

•Perfect, thanks! I've been maintaining my log consistently so that should be fine.

For anyone else going through this - the refiling process took me about 30 minutes to complete online. Much quicker than I remembered from my original application. Just have all your employment info ready and it goes pretty smoothly.

CosmicCrusader
•That's reassuring! I was dreading having to go through that whole lengthy process again.

•Yeah it's definitely streamlined compared to the initial filing. Most of your basic info is probably already in their system.

One more thing to consider - if you've been doing any gig work or freelancing during your claim period, make sure you have documentation of that income too. It might affect your new base period calculation.

CosmicCrusader
•I did some freelance work but reported it all on my weekly claims. Should I gather additional documentation?

Liam Sullivan
•If you reported it properly on your weekly claims you should be fine. They have record of what you reported.

Thanks everyone for all this helpful information! I feel much more confident about refiling now. Going to gather my documents this weekend and file early next week.

•Good luck! And remember if you run into any issues that require talking to Washington ESD, Claimyr is there as an option to avoid the phone system frustrations.

•Definitely keeping that in mind. Thanks again!
