How can I be eligible for unemployment benefits in Washington state?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I lost my job last month when the restaurant I worked at closed permanently due to financial issues. I worked there for about 8 months full-time as a server. Before that I had another job for 6 months at a retail store. I'm not sure what the requirements are or how they calculate if you're eligible. Can someone explain what Washington ESD looks for when determining eligibility? I want to make sure I meet all the criteria before I apply.

The basic requirements for Washington unemployment are pretty straightforward. You need to have earned enough wages in your base period (first 4 of the last 5 quarters before you filed) and you must be unemployed through no fault of your own. Since your restaurant closed, that should count as a qualifying separation. You also need to be able and available for work and actively searching for new employment.

What's considered 'enough wages' exactly? I made about $2,800 per month at the restaurant job.

For 2025, you need at least $5,265 in your base period total, with at least $1,755 in your highest quarter. Your restaurant wages should easily meet that threshold.

sounds like you should qualify no problem. i was in a similar situation when my store closed down last year. the hardest part honestly is getting through to someone at washington esd when you have questions about your claim

0 coins

Yeah I've heard their phone lines are always busy. How long did it take you to get approved?

0 coins

took about 3 weeks but that included some back and forth about my work history verification

0 coins

You'll definitely want to apply as soon as possible since benefits don't start until the week you file your claim. The Washington ESD system will automatically calculate your base period wages when you apply online. Make sure you have your employment history ready including dates, employer names, and approximate earnings for each job.

Do I need pay stubs or will they verify my wages directly with my employers?

0 coins

Washington ESD can verify wages through employer reports in most cases, but having your own records helps if there are discrepancies.

One thing that really helped me when I was dealing with Washington ESD was using Claimyr to actually get through to a representative. I was stuck trying to verify some employment information and couldn't reach anyone for weeks. Found out about claimyr.com from someone here and it actually worked - they got me connected to an agent who cleared everything up in like 10 minutes. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

How much does that service cost? I'm already strapped for cash waiting for my claim to process.

0 coins

It's way cheaper than losing weeks of benefits because you can't get help with your claim. For me it was worth it to resolve the issue quickly.

0 coins

I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully the application process goes smoothly.

make sure you start filing your weekly claims right away even if your initial claim is still processing. i made that mistake and lost a week of benefits

0 coins

Good to know! When do the weekly claims start?

0 coins

you can file starting the sunday after you submit your initial application

0 coins

The job search requirement is 3 contacts per week once you start receiving benefits. Keep detailed records because Washington ESD does audit these periodically. You can use WorkSourceWA to track your searches automatically.

0 coins

What counts as a valid job contact? Just applying online or do I need to do more?

0 coins

Online applications count, but you can also include networking events, job fairs, contacting employers directly, or even informational interviews. The key is documenting what you did.

0 coins

I always mix up the WorkSource requirements. Is that separate from the regular job search log?

0 coins

WorkSourceWA is the state's job search system that can help track your activities, but you can also keep your own log. Either way works as long as you have records.

Since your restaurant closed permanently, that's clearly a qualifying reason. You won't have to worry about any misconduct issues or voluntary quit problems. Just be honest about everything when you apply and you should be fine.

0 coins

That's reassuring. I was worried they might question why I didn't stay longer at my previous jobs.

0 coins

As long as you didn't quit without good cause, shorter job durations aren't usually a problem for eligibility.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS A NIGHTMARE TO NAVIGATE!!! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my adjudication to complete and nobody can tell me what's going on. The online system shows nothing and calling is impossible. This whole process is designed to make people give up.

0 coins

Oh no, that's exactly what I was afraid of. What's adjudication?

0 coins

Adjudication happens when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim - like verifying your separation reason or work history. It can take several weeks unfortunately.

0 coins

SEVERAL WEEKS IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT! And good luck getting anyone to explain what they're investigating.

0 coins

i qualified right away when my hours got cut to basically nothing. restaurant industry is tough right now, lots of people applying for UI benefits

0 coins

Did you have any issues with the application process?

0 coins

nope pretty straightforward, just took forever to actually get my first payment

0 coins

Make sure you understand the difference between 'able and available' versus being on standby. If you're truly unemployed and looking for work, you're able and available. Standby is for temporary layoffs where you expect to return to the same employer.

0 coins

Since my restaurant closed permanently, I'd be able and available, right?

0 coins

Exactly. You're not expecting to return to that job so you'd file as able and available for work.

0 coins

I always get confused about standby vs regular claims. Thanks for explaining that clearly!

One more tip - if you run into any problems with your claim, don't wait around hoping it resolves itself. I wasted months trying to get help through normal channels. Someone mentioned Claimyr earlier and I finally tried it last week. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 20 minutes and sorted out my whole mess. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

0 coins

Did they actually fix your issue or just give you the runaround like usual?

0 coins

Actually fixed it! Turns out there was a simple verification step I'd missed. The agent walked me through it and my benefits were released the next day.

0 coins

Good to know there are options if I get stuck. Hopefully I won't need them though.

0 coins

Your situation sounds pretty standard for unemployment eligibility. Restaurant closures are happening a lot lately and Washington ESD is used to processing these types of claims. Just gather your employment info and apply online at esd.wa.gov.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice. I feel much more confident about applying now.

0 coins

Good luck! The process can be frustrating but you definitely seem to qualify based on what you've shared.

0 coins

just wanted to add that if you worked in multiple states in the past year, you might need to file in a different state. but sounds like all your work was in washington so you should be good to file here

0 coins

Yeah all my work has been in Washington state. Thanks for mentioning that though!

0 coins

The monetary determination letter you'll get after applying will show exactly how much you qualify for and for how many weeks. Don't panic if it takes a few days to arrive - that's normal processing time.

0 coins

About how long does that usually take to receive?

0 coins

Usually within a week of filing your initial claim, sometimes faster if everything processes smoothly.

0 coins

Remember you can also appeal any determination if you disagree with Washington ESD's decision. You have 30 days from the date of any notice to file an appeal. Hopefully you won't need that information but it's good to know your rights.

0 coins

Hopefully it won't come to that but thanks for letting me know the timeframe.

0 coins

Most claims go through without issues, especially straightforward cases like yours. Just wanted you to be informed!

0 coins

Last thing - when you do your weekly claims, be completely honest about any work you do or money you earn, even if it's just a few hours. Washington ESD will find out eventually and it's better to report it upfront than deal with an overpayment later.

0 coins

Good point. I'll make sure to report any income accurately. Thanks again everyone for all the help!

0 coins

You're welcome! Hope everything goes smoothly with your claim.
