First time filing - how to submit weekly claim for unemployment with Washington ESD?

I just got approved for UI benefits after waiting through adjudication for 6 weeks. Now I'm supposed to file my weekly claim but I'm completely lost on the process. The Washington ESD website mentions something about reporting work and earnings but I'm not sure what counts. Do I report gross or net pay? What if I worked odd jobs for cash? Also when exactly do I need to submit it each week? I don't want to mess this up and lose my benefits.

You need to file your weekly claim every week even if you didn't work. Log into your eServices account on the Washington ESD website and look for the 'File Weekly Claim' link. It's usually available starting Sunday for the previous week.

Thanks! So I file this Sunday for last week? And what if I forget to file one week?

0 coins

Yes file every Sunday. If you miss a week you can still file late but there might be delays in payment. Don't make it a habit.

Been through this process multiple times unfortunately. You report ALL work and earnings, including cash jobs. Report gross pay (before taxes). Be honest because they can audit you later. The job search requirement is 3 contacts per week unless you're on standby status.

0 coins

What's standby status? I don't think I have that.

0 coins

Standby is when your employer expects to call you back within a specific timeframe. Most people don't qualify for it.

Actually I think the job search requirement changed recently. Might want to double check that on the Washington ESD site.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my weekly claim issues but their phone lines are impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there? I keep getting disconnected after waiting 2+ hours.

I was having the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Saved me so much time and frustration. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

Try calling right when they open at 8am. Sometimes you can get through faster that way.

Quick update - I found the weekly claim section in eServices. It asks about availability for work each day of the week. Do I need to be available 7 days a week or just Monday-Friday?

0 coins

You need to be available Monday through Friday typically, unless your normal work schedule included weekends. Answer honestly about your availability.

0 coins

This is confusing because I work in retail and my normal schedule included weekends. Should I mark available for Saturday and Sunday too?

0 coins

Make sure you keep track of your job search activities if you're required to do them. Washington ESD can ask for proof at any time. I use a spreadsheet with company names, dates, and contact methods.

0 coins

What counts as a valid job search contact? Does applying online count?

0 coins

Online applications count. So do networking events, job fairs, and contacting employers directly. Just keep detailed records.

0 coins

You can also register with WorkSourceWA for additional job search activities. Some people find opportunities there.

I made the mistake of not reporting a small cash job last month and now I have an overpayment notice. Be super careful about reporting ALL income, even if it seems insignificant.

0 coins

Oh no! How much trouble are you in? Can you appeal it?

0 coins

I can appeal but I'm probably going to lose since I did work those hours. The penalty is 50% on top of what I have to pay back.

0 coins

This is why it's so important to be completely honest on your weekly claims. Even $50 in cash work needs to be reported.

0 coins

Does anyone know what happens if I start a full-time job in the middle of a claim week? Do I still file for that week or just stop filing?

0 coins

You still file for that week but report all the hours and earnings. Washington ESD will calculate if you're eligible for partial benefits.

0 coins

Thanks! I wasn't sure if I should just stop filing completely when I started work.

The weekly claim deadline is Saturday night at 11:59 PM for the previous week. I almost missed it once and panicked. Set a reminder on your phone!

0 coins

Good tip! I'll set a recurring alarm for Sunday mornings to remind myself.

0 coins

I file mine every Sunday morning with my coffee. Making it part of a routine helps me remember.

Question about the work search - if I have an interview scheduled, does that count as one of my three weekly job contacts or is it separate?

0 coins

The interview itself doesn't count as a separate contact. It's a result of your initial application which already counted. But follow-up calls after the interview can count.

0 coins

That makes sense. So the initial application counts as one contact, then any follow-up would be additional contacts.

I'm so frustrated with this whole system. My payment has been pending for 3 weeks even though I'm filing my weekly claims correctly. Anyone else having payment delays?

0 coins

Same here! That's why I'm trying to get through to them. Something is definitely wrong with their system lately.

0 coins

I had payment delays and used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. The agent told me there was an issue with my job separation that needed clarification. Got it resolved the same day.

Pro tip: if you made a mistake on your weekly claim, you can't go back and edit it. You'll need to call Washington ESD to get it corrected. This is why double-checking everything before submitting is so important.

0 coins

Yikes, good to know! I'll be extra careful when I file mine.

0 coins

I learned this the hard way. Made a typo in my earnings and had to wait weeks to get it fixed because I couldn't get through on the phone.

0 coins

Does anyone know if there's a mobile app for filing weekly claims? The website is kind of clunky on my phone.

0 coins

There's no official Washington ESD mobile app. You have to use the website through your phone's browser. It's not great but it works.

0 coins

That's disappointing. Most other government services have apps now.

0 coins

Important reminder: keep copies of all your weekly claim confirmations. I screenshot mine every week just in case there are questions later about whether I filed or not.

0 coins

Smart idea! I'll start doing that too.

0 coins

I email myself the confirmation numbers. That way I have a timestamp and can search for them easily.

0 coins

One more thing about reporting work - if you're doing gig work like DoorDash or Uber, you need to report those earnings too. It's all considered income for unemployment purposes.

0 coins

I hadn't thought about that. Good thing I haven't started any gig work yet.

0 coins

Yeah, they consider gig work as self-employment income. Has to be reported just like any other job.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I feel much more confident about filing my first weekly claim now. This thread should be bookmarked for other newbies.

0 coins

Glad we could help! Remember to file every week and be honest about everything. You'll get the hang of it.

0 coins

Seriously, this community is amazing. I was so lost and now I know exactly what to do.

0 coins

Just want to add that you can also check your claim status and payment history in the eServices portal. Sometimes payments get delayed due to bank processing times too, not just ESD issues. I usually get my payments on Tuesday or Wednesday after filing on Sunday. Also, if you ever need to update your direct deposit info or address, do it through eServices rather than trying to call - it's much faster and you'll get a confirmation email.
