ESD claim stuck for 7 weeks after medical-related termination from Safeway - facing eviction

I'm at my wit's end with ESD right now. I was let go from my cashier position at QFC back in January for what they called 'attendance issues' - but here's the thing: I have a documented heart condition that caused most of my absences. I had provided medical documentation to HR for all but one absence (when I was stuck in traffic during that crazy snowstorm), and one evening the store manager actually sent me home early when I was experiencing severe chest pains during my shift. I filed for unemployment immediately after being terminated, submitted all my medical documentation showing my absences were health-related, and yet my claim has been stuck in pending status for nearly 2 months now! My savings are completely gone and my landlord just gave me a 14-day pay or vacate notice yesterday. I called the governor's office last week to get my case escalated given my housing situation, and they said an adjudicator would be assigned. The status briefly changed to 'adjudication in progress' and now it's back to 'waiting for information' with zero communication about what information they're supposedly waiting for! Does anyone know what I can do at this point? How much longer will this take? I literally cannot afford to wait another day, let alone another week.

I'm sorry you're going through this. The 'waiting for information' status usually means they've requested details from your former employer. QFC (like all Kroger stores) has a centralized unemployment response team that can take weeks to reply. The good news is that termination for medically-documented absences often qualifies for benefits, and you were smart to submit your documentation early. You should call ESD directly to find out exactly what info they're waiting for. It could be something simple they need from you rather than your employer. When your housing is at risk, you can request an expedited hardship review.

Thank you for the explanation. I've been trying to call ESD for three weeks straight but can never get through! I'm either on hold for hours before getting disconnected or can't even get into the queue. Do you know if there's a special hardship line or specific time when it's easier to reach them?

OMG THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOO!! I was fired from Fred Meyer last year for missing work due to my lupus flares (even with drs notes!!!) and my claim was stuck for almost 10 WEEKS before finally getting approved. The system is totally broken and they dont care if we end up homeless while they take their sweet time!!! Have you tried contacting your state rep? Thats what finally worked for me.

I hadn't thought about contacting my state rep. That's a good idea! Did you just call their office directly? How long did it take after you got them involved?

yeah just google your district and call their office directly!! took about 4 days after my rep's office sent an inquiry before ESD suddenly 'found' all my medical documentation that they claimed was missing lol. sooooo frustrating but it worked!!

Have you tried Claimyr? I was in a similar situation last month - couldn't get through to ESD for weeks. Was about to lose my mind. A friend told me about claimyr.com and it got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have this system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you, then calls you when an agent is on the line. Saved me from spending hours on hold. There's a video demo here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. The agent I spoke with was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim.

I second this. The ESD phone system is impossible right now with all the spring layoffs happening. I tried for two weeks straight before using Claimyr. Got through to an agent who could actually see what was happening with my claim and fixed a flag in the system.

Thank you both! I'm going to try this right now. At this point I'll try anything that might help me get through to a real person.

I've been checking the message center obsessively, but thanks for the suggestion. There's nothing there except the automated confirmation when I first filed.

This is exactly why I despise ESD's 'process'. Terminations related to documented medical conditions almost always qualify for benefits, but they make you jump through endless hoops and wait for months. It's designed to discourage people from claiming what they're legally entitled to. Here's what you need to do: 1. Contact your state representative AND state senator (this works better than governor's office) 2. Get through to an ESD agent who can see the specific hold code on your account 3. Request a hardship expedition in writing (upload this to your eServices account) 4. Document every attempt to contact them (dates, times, outcomes) If you have a WorkSource office nearby, go there in person. They sometimes have direct lines to ESD agents and can help identify what's missing. The 'waiting for information' status is often code for 'we're waiting for your employer to respond' - but if they don't respond within 10 business days, ESD is supposed to move forward with the information they have.

Thank you for these specific steps. I'll absolutely contact my state rep and senator today. I didn't know about the 10-day employer response window - it's been WAY longer than that already! The WorkSource idea is great too, there's one about 20 minutes from me that I can visit tomorrow.

When I got that "waiting for information" status last year, it was because they needed a form from my doctor confirming my medical condition. Did you submit the Medical Statement Form? It's different from just doctor's notes. My adjudicator never told me they needed this until I finally got through on the phone.

Oh! I don't think I submitted that specific form, just my doctor's notes and the HR documentation. Where do I find this form? Is it on the ESD website somewhere?

Yes, it's on the ESD website under forms. I think it's called the "Medical Statement Form" or something similar. Your doctor needs to fill it out certifying that your condition caused the absences. This might be exactly what they're waiting for.

THANK YOU! Just found it and will get it to my doctor tomorrow morning. Really hoping this is the missing piece!

I went through almost the exact same situation last fall. When ESD says "waiting for information" but doesn't tell you what they're waiting for, it's incredibly frustrating. In my case, after FINALLY getting through to an agent, they told me my employer had disputed my claim saying I had "voluntarily quit" rather than being terminated for medical absences. Do you have any documentation from your termination meeting? Email, paperwork, anything stating the reason they gave? If QFC is trying to categorize this as something other than what actually happened, you'll need that documentation for your appeal hearing. Regarding your eviction situation, contact your county's rental assistance program immediately. Many have emergency funds specifically for people waiting on unemployment benefits. It won't solve your ESD problem, but it might keep a roof over your head until this gets resolved.

Yes, thankfully I have the termination paperwork that specifically cites 'dependability' and lists the dates I was absent. I also have emails with HR about my medical documentation. I'll definitely look into rental assistance - that could be a lifesaver right now. Thank you!

Just wanted to follow up - if you're getting evicted and this is a medical condition situation, also contact the Northwest Justice Project right away. They have a CLEAR hotline (1-888-201-1014) for free legal help with both unemployment AND eviction issues. Since your termination was related to a medical condition, you have additional protections under disability laws that might help your case. And definitely pursue getting through to an actual ESD agent as others have suggested. The status messages in the portal are often vague and unhelpful. Only a live agent can tell you exactly what's holding up your claim.

I'll call the CLEAR hotline today - thank you! I didn't even think about potential disability protections. Really appreciate everyone's help here, it's giving me some hope that I can get this resolved.
