Average ESD adjudication wait times? Employer verification taking 3+ weeks - claim still pending
I'm getting seriously worried about my ESD claim. I filed for unemployment about three weeks ago after being laid off from my construction job. My claim status has been stuck on 'pending adjudication' this whole time while they verify with my employer why I was let go. Every single weekly claim I've submitted is showing as 'pending' with no money paid out yet. I've got rent due next week and my savings are practically gone. Does anyone know what the typical wait time is for adjudication these days? I've heard everything from 2 weeks to 2 months from different people. Also, isn't there a deadline for employers to respond to ESD's verification request? I feel like my old company is dragging their feet on purpose. My supervisor actually told me they were downsizing our crew due to the project ending, so this should be straightforward. Any insights would be really appreciated. Starting to stress out big time.

Unfortunately, adjudication times are all over the place in 2025. I got approved after 4 weeks last month, but my neighbor waited almost 8 weeks. The official ESD guideline says employers have 10 days to respond, but ESD often gives them extensions if they request them. The best thing you can do is: 1. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while pending 2. Check your ESD account messages daily for any requests for information 3. Try calling ESD directly to check if there's anything missing they need from you Once approved, you'll get all your back weeks paid at once, so hang in there!

•Thanks for the info! I've definitely been keeping up with my weekly claims and checking messages. I've tried calling ESD about 20 times but can never get through - just get the automated message saying call volume is too high. Is there any trick to actually reaching a real person?

•6 weeks? That's rough. I'm really hoping it doesn't take that long for me. Did you do anything special to finally get it approved or did they just randomly finish processing it?

I've been through this exact situation twice in the past year (seasonal construction work). The law says employers have 10 days to respond, but ESD rarely enforces this strictly. In my experience, adjudication typically takes 3-5 weeks currently, though I've seen some claims resolved in as little as 2 weeks when the separation reason is clear-cut like a layoff due to lack of work. One thing to check - log into your ESD account and look for any alerts or "issues" listed. Sometimes they need additional information from YOU, but the notification gets missed. Also, make absolutely sure your contact information is up to date so you don't miss any communications. Did you provide any documentation when you initially filed showing the layoff was due to lack of work? Things like a layoff letter or email from your employer can speed things up considerably.

•Thanks for the detailed response! I checked my account again and don't see any alerts or issues listed - just says "pending - adjudication in progress" for each week. I did upload the email from my project manager mentioning the downsizing when I first filed. Maybe I should try to get something more official from HR?

If your construction job was union, contact your union rep immediately! They can sometimes push things along. Otherwise, try calling right when ESD opens at 8:00 am. Thats what worked for me last time.

I was stuck in adjudication for almost 5 weeks earlier this year. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to an actual ESD agent. I was skeptical at first, but after trying to call on my own for weeks with no luck, I gave it a shot. The service connected me to an ESD rep in about 20 minutes, and they were able to see that my employer had actually already verified my layoff, but the claim was stuck in their system waiting for review. The agent manually moved my claim forward that same day, and I got paid for all my back weeks two days later. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. Definitely worth it when you're stressed about paying bills!

•IS THIS A SCAM??? sounds kinda fishy to me... how does some random service get you thru when nobody else can get thru? do they have some special deal with ESD or something??

•Not a scam! They basically use technology to wait on hold for you and call you when they reach an agent. Nothing special with ESD - just automated dialing and holding that saves you from having to do it yourself. I was suspicious too but desperate after weeks of trying. It worked for me, but obviously do whatever you're comfortable with.

My adjudication took exactly 27 days in February. I think it really depends on your specific circumstances and how busy ESD is. If it makes you feel any better, they WILL backpay you for all those pending weeks once approved!

One more important tip - if you're approaching the one-month mark and still haven't heard anything, contact your state representative's office. Many have staff dedicated to helping constituents with ESD issues, and they can often get answers when you can't. Just find your district representative online and look for a constituent services contact. They can sometimes work miracles with ESD cases that are stuck!

•That's a great idea I hadn't thought of! I'll definitely try that if this drags on another week. I really appreciate all the suggestions everyone has offered. I've tried calling again this morning with no luck, but I'm going to keep trying different approaches. Will update once I get some movement on this!

•Just checked my spam folder - nothing from ESD there, but thanks for the reminder! I'll keep checking it daily from now on just to be safe.
