ESD adjudication timeframe reality check - can I speed it up or am I wasting my time?

So I got laid off 3 weeks ago from my construction management position and I've been filing weekly claims since then. My claim status is showing 'adjudication in progress' and I'm getting really anxious about how long this might drag on. My former employer is contesting the claim saying I was fired for performance issues (total BS - it was a layoff with 20 other people). Can anyone tell me realistically how long adjudication usually takes with ESD these days? I've heard horror stories about people waiting 4-6 months and then getting denied anyway. I've got about 2 months of savings before things get desperate. Is there ANY way to expedite the process? I'm continuing to do my 3 job search activities each week, but I'm wondering if I should just give up on unemployment and focus 100% on finding a new job instead. Don't want to waste my time if this is going to be a 6-month wild goose chase that ends in denial anyway.

idk man i was in adjudication for over 5 MONTHS last year and they kept asking for more documents. total nightmare. eventually got approved but was almost homeless by then. some ppl get thru in like 3 weeks tho. its so random!!!

5 months?? That's insane. Did you do anything special to finally get it resolved or did they just randomly decide to approve it?

Adjudication times vary so much that it's impossible to predict. I've seen anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months. In your case, since the employer is contesting, it might take longer as they'll need to investigate both sides. Definitely DON'T stop filing your weekly claims though - if you get approved, you'll only get paid for weeks you properly filed!

That's good advice about continuing to file. I guess I'll keep doing that while I job hunt. Do you know if there's any way to check the status besides just seeing "adjudication in progress"?

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE PPL GIVE UP!!!! They WANT u 2 stop filing so they don't have to pay u. They put EVERYONE in adjudication hoping u'll just give up. DON'T STOP FILING, that's exactly what they WANT!!!

I don't think that's entirely accurate. While ESD does have issues, adjudication is a normal part of the process when there's a disagreement about eligibility. They're required by law to investigate claims properly. My neighbor works for ESD and says they're just understaffed.

Ur neighbor is PART OF THE SYSTEM! Of course they'll defend it. I filed for 18 WEEKS before getting paid a DIME even tho I was clearly eligible. They PURPOSELY make it confusing!

I went through a similar situation last year and can offer some insight from my experience: 1. Average adjudication times currently run 4-8 weeks when there's a dispute like yours, but can definitely go longer depending on your specific case complexity and ESD's current workload. 2. Keep filing those weekly claims religiously with your 3 job search activities. If approved, you'll only get payments for weeks properly claimed. 3. For expediting, there are limited options: - Contact your state representative (seriously - they have liaison channels) - Submit an economic hardship statement through your eServices account - Try to reach an ESD agent directly (almost impossible with standard methods) 4. Don't give up on your claim while job hunting - do both simultaneously. The potential backpay is worth the weekly 10-minute claim filing.

Thanks for this detailed response. I didn't know about the economic hardship statement - I'll look into that. And good idea about contacting my state rep, though I'm not sure who that is. I'll look it up.

After 2 weeks of constantly calling ESD and getting nowhere (busy signals, disconnects, hanging on hold forever), I finally discovered Claimyr.com and it actually worked! They connected me to an ESD agent within 20 minutes who was able to see my claim had all the documents but needed manual review. She escalated it and I was out of adjudication a week later. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Absolute lifesaver when you need to actually talk to someone at ESD.

Wow, I hadn't heard of this. Did they actually give you a realistic timeframe when you finally got through? I'm wondering if it's worth trying or if they'll just tell me to keep waiting.

Yes, they gave me a specific timeframe (3-5 business days in my case) and explained exactly why my claim was stuck. Having that clarity alone was worth it. The agent also documented everything we discussed in my claim notes.

i had adjutication for 3.5 weeks cause my boss said i quit (lies) but i really got laid off. i sent in my final paycheck stub that showed "layoff" and also the company email about the restructuring. ESD approved me after that. do u have any proof it was a layoff? email, termination letter, anything? if u can upload that it might help.

That's a good point. I do have the company-wide email about the restructuring and the layoff list with my name on it. I've uploaded those documents but maybe I should call and make sure they're looking at them?

One thing I want to emphasize - absolutely DO NOT stop filing weekly claims. If you get approved after adjudication, you'll only receive benefits for weeks that you properly filed claims. I've seen too many people give up on filing, then get approved months later and miss out on thousands of dollars they would have received for those unfiled weeks.

Good reminder - I'll definitely keep filing. It's just frustrating not knowing if I'll ever see that money. Bills are piling up.

I used to work as an ESD claims specialist (left in 2024), so I can give you some insider perspective on adjudication timeframes: 1. The official target is 21 days, but with current staffing that's rarely met when there's a dispute. 2. Average adjudication right now is running 6-8 weeks for contested claims where both parties have differing accounts. 3. Your specific scenario (layoff vs. performance termination) is unfortunately one of the more time-consuming types to resolve because it requires gathering evidence from both sides. 4. The fact that there were 20 other people laid off in your company is helpful evidence. Make sure you've uploaded any documentation showing this was a reduction in force, not individual performance. 5. When employers contest claims, your odds of approval without an interview drop significantly. Be prepared for a fact-finding interview call - have your evidence and timeline ready. 6. Keep filing those weekly claims without fail. Your job search activities are being recorded and will be reviewed if your claim is approved.

Thank you for this insider perspective! Really helpful. When you mention a fact-finding interview, how do those typically work? Will they call me directly or schedule it through eServices?

Gabriel Ruiz

•

They'll typically call you directly at the number on your account. Make sure your contact info is current in your eServices profile. Sometimes they'll schedule it through eServices messaging, but often they just call. These interviews usually last 15-30 minutes and they'll ask detailed questions about your separation. Be honest but concise, and stick to the facts about the layoff.

My adjudication took 9 weeks in 2025 and I was about to lose my apartment. I called my state representative's office and explained my hardship and they have special channels to contact ESD. Within 3 days of their inquiry my claim was resolved (approved)! Don't wait as long as I did to reach out to your representative.
