ESD claim showing 'Invalid' status - employer hasn't reported recent wages
I'm totally confused about my unemployment status right now. When I log into my ESD account and click on my claim, it says 'Invalid' instead of the usual 'Pending Processing' or 'Paid' status I was expecting. I talked to HR at my former company, and they admitted they still haven't submitted my wage information to ESD for the last quarter I worked (January-March 2025). Is this why my claim shows as invalid? Will it automatically update once they report my wages, or do I need to file an appeal or something? I'm already 3 weeks without a paycheck and starting to panic about bills. Has anyone dealt with this 'Invalid' status before?

The 'Invalid' status usually means ESD doesn't have enough qualifying wage information to establish your claim. Since your employer hasn't reported your most recent quarter wages, that's almost certainly the problem. You have a few options: 1) Wait for your employer to report wages (but they should have done this already!), 2) Call ESD and ask them to use wage documentation you can provide (paystubs, W-2, etc.), or 3) File a wage dispute. I'd recommend trying option #2 first.

•Thanks for explaining! Do you know if there's a deadline for when my employer has to report those wages? And if I try option #2, will ESD actually accept my paystubs as proof? I'm worried they'll just tell me to wait for my employer.

same thing happened to me!! my boss was like 3 months late reporting my wages and my claim said invalid the whole time. so frustrating!!!

•Did your claim eventually switch from Invalid to something else once they reported the wages? Or did you have to do something to fix it?

This is SO typical of ESD's broken system!! They expect us to wait around with no money while employers take their sweet time reporting wages. Meanwhile our bills pile up and we get late fees. I've been through this EXACT situation twice and both times had to fight for what I was owed. Your employer has legal deadlines to report those wages - they're breaking the law by being late! You need to file a wage complaint with L&I immediately. Don't let them get away with this!!

•Just to clarify - employers have until the end of the month following each quarter to report wages to ESD. So for January-March (Q1), they have until April 30th. If we're still in April, the employer isn't actually late yet. I agree it's frustrating though when you need benefits right away.

•I just checked and I'm pretty sure my employer info is correct. I copied it directly from my last paystub. But thanks for the suggestion!

I spent 4 days trying to get through to ESD about this exact problem last month. Their phone lines are completely overwhelmed and I kept getting disconnected. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected directly to an ESD agent. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent was able to check my claim and see that my employer hadn't reported wages yet. They gave me options to submit my own wage verification documents instead of waiting. Definitely worth checking out if you're in a rush to get this resolved.

•It worked for me! The ESD agent told me missing wage reports are actually one of the most common reasons for the 'Invalid' status. They flagged my account for wage verification and I uploaded my paystubs and W2 through their document upload portal. Took about 9 days total to get my claim validated after that.

Here's my professional advice on this situation: 1. If your claim shows 'Invalid' specifically and you know your employer hasn't reported wages for the qualifying quarter, you should proactively gather your own wage documentation (all paystubs from the base year, W-2s, etc). 2. You don't need to wait for your employer to report wages if you have your own proof of employment. ESD has a wage verification process for exactly this situation. 3. The most effective path is contacting ESD directly. Explain that your claim shows 'Invalid' due to unreported wages, and request the wage verification option. They'll likely direct you to upload your documentation through your eServices portal. 4. There's a specific form for this called the "Request to Backdate Unemployment Claim" that you may need to fill out if your claim needs to be backdated to when you first applied. Don't wait for this to resolve itself - being proactive is important, especially when bills are due.

•Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I didn't know about the wage verification process or that specific form. I'll gather all my paystubs and W-2s right away. Really appreciate your help!

•No, I've only worked in Washington for the past 3 years. But that's good info for others who might have that situation!

Just checking back - were you able to contact ESD and get this resolved? Sometimes the 'Invalid' status can also appear if there's an identity verification issue, so if providing wage documentation doesn't solve it, that might be the next thing to check.

•I finally got through to ESD! You were right about the missing wages being the issue. I uploaded my paystubs and W-2, and they said they'll process a wage verification. Apparently it should take 7-10 business days to update my claim status. Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone!
