ESD approved my claim but payment still pending after 10 days - normal wait time?

Hey everyone, just got the 'approved' status on my unemployment claim last week but still haven't received any money. It's been 10 days already!! My ESD account says approved but nothing in my bank account yet. This is my first time filing for unemployment so I have no idea if this delay is normal. I've got rent coming up next week and was counting on this payment. Anyone know how long it typically takes for money to hit your account after approval? I chose direct deposit if that matters. Getting kind of stressed about this wait...

Thanks, I just checked and my bank info seems correct. Hoping it comes through in the next few days then!

The first payment typically takes longer than subsequent payments. ESD processes claims in batches, and your first payment might include a waiting period depending on when you initially filed. A few things to check: 1. Verify your payment method is set to direct deposit (not debit card) 2. Make sure you've completed all weekly claims since filing 3. Confirm there are no alerts or action items in your eServices account If it goes beyond 14 days post-approval, you should try contacting ESD directly as there might be an additional verification step that wasn't communicated to you.

This is really helpful, thank you! I do see my payment method is direct deposit and I've been filing my weekly claims. There are no alerts showing up in my account. I guess I'll give it until the end of this week before panicking.

The same thing happened to me back in January! My claim said approved but no money showed up. Turns out I had to verify my identity again even though the claim said approved. Check if there's any identity verification requests in your notifications. Sometimes they don't make these very obvious.

I just looked again and don't see any identity verification requests, but I'll keep checking. Did they eventually contact you about the verification or did you have to figure it out yourself?

I had to figure it out myself! I finally got through to an agent after calling for days who told me about it. The system had sent me a letter but it never arrived.

ESD IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!! Been there, done that. "Approved" doesn't mean ANYTHING until you see money in your account. I was "approved" for nearly THREE WEEKS before I got paid. Their system is antiquated and they don't care about people who are struggling to pay bills. They'll get around to it whenever they feel like it. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims though - that's super important even while waiting.

Three weeks?? That's insane! I'll definitely keep filing my weekly claims. Thanks for the heads up - at least I know it might take longer than I expected.

Try checking your payment status under the "UI Payment History" section in eServices. Sometimes it shows a payment is scheduled but hasn't been released yet. Also, direct deposit usually takes 2-3 business days AFTER ESD releases the payment. Being approved doesn't mean the money was immediately sent out - there's often a processing period before the actual payment is initiated. If you're getting close to rent being due, you might want to call ESD directly to check on the status rather than waiting. Getting someone on the phone can be tough though.

I did check the payment history and it shows as "processing" but no date. I've tried calling a few times but keep getting the "high call volume" message and it disconnects me. It's so frustrating!

I had the exact same issue with trying to reach ESD last month! I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they have an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Got my payment issue resolved in one call after that.

SIX WEEKS??? That should be illegal! Have you called them? Contacted your state rep? This is exactly why I'm saying the system is broken!!!

Just to follow up on this thread - one common reason for payment delays after approval is the bank verification process. ESD sometimes does micro-deposits to verify your account before sending the full payment amount. Check your bank account for any small deposits (usually less than $1) from Washington State. Also, if you have any previous employers contesting your claim, that can cause delays even after initial approval. The status might show approved while they're still resolving an employer dispute in the background. For weekly claims after your first payment, the standard timing is processing on Sunday/Monday and deposit by Wednesday/Thursday if there are no issues.

Update: The money finally came through this morning! Looks like it took exactly 13 days after approval. Thanks everyone for your help and advice. For anyone else reading this later, just know that "approved" doesn't mean immediate payment - be prepared to wait 1-2 weeks for that first payment to process.

Thanks for the update! Glad it worked out. And yes, that timing is pretty typical for first payments - subsequent ones should be faster now that you're in the system.
