ESD ReliaCard cash withdrawal limits at US Bank - teller denied my request

Has anyone run into issues with their ReliaCard at US Bank branches? I just tried to withdraw cash from a teller and got denied even though I had more than enough funds on the card. The teller said something about only being able to use the card once per day at a branch for cash withdrawals. I need to pay my landlord ASAP and this is super stressful! My unemployment benefits just hit yesterday and now I can't access enough cash because of some withdrawal limit. Anyone know what the actual daily limit is for teller withdrawals with the ReliaCard? This wasn't an issue when I had unemployment back in 2022.

I've been using ReliaCard for my ESD benefits for about 6 months now. The teller limit is $7,000 per day, but there's also a rule about only one teller transaction per day at US Bank branches. It's buried in the fine print they send with the card. I learned this the hard way when I tried to make two withdrawals at different branches on the same day. Try using an ATM for additional withdrawals (daily ATM limit is $1,025) or do a cash advance at a different bank (though they'll charge a fee).

Thanks for the info! That's so frustrating they don't make that clear. I only tried to withdraw $3,000 so I was under the limit. I'll try the ATM but that won't get me enough to pay rent in one go. Do you know if I can transfer funds to my regular bank account online instead?

the relicard is THE WORST!!! i've had nothing but problems since esd switched to it. tried calling their customer service and was on hold for 45 min before giving up. atm limits are too low and u get charged fees at non-usbank atms. wish they'd just direct deposit to regular accounts like normal.

You can actually switch back to direct deposit! Log into your ESD account, go to Payment Method, and select Direct Deposit instead of ReliaCard. Takes about 1-2 weeks to process the change. I did this after dealing with similar ReliaCard headaches for a month.

The ReliaCard has several different limits you need to be aware of: - ATM withdrawals: $1,025 per day - Teller cash withdrawals: $7,000 per day - Point-of-sale transactions: $7,000 per day - Transfers to a bank account: $7,000 per day And yes, there is a limit of one teller transaction per day at US Bank branches. This is clearly stated in the cardholder agreement that came with your ReliaCard. I recommend setting up a bank transfer from your ReliaCard to your regular checking account online. It's usually processed within 1-3 business days and doesn't have the same restrictions as teller withdrawals. You can do this through the ReliaCard mobile app or website.

I never saw anything about the one transaction per day limit! I'll check the agreement again. I tried setting up the bank transfer but it says I need to verify my external account which takes 2-3 days, and my rent is due tomorrow. Ughhh.

I had the same issue last month! So annoying. I ended up having to go to an ATM to get the daily max, then went back the next day for the rest. My apartment complex charged me a late fee because of it. The ReliaCard is supposed to make things easier but it just creates more problems honestly.

Have you tried contacting ESD directly about this issue? Sometimes when you're having problems with your ReliaCard, it's faster to go straight to the source rather than dealing with US Bank. I've been struggling with ESD's phone lines too - they're constantly busy and I couldn't get through for days trying to resolve an adjudication issue. I finally tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual ESD agent. They have a service that helps you skip the phone queue. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The ESD agent I spoke with was able to help me understand all my ReliaCard options and even expedited my issue. Might be worth trying if you need immediate assistance with your benefits or card.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'd rather not have to call ESD about this if I can avoid it, but if I can't figure out another solution by tomorrow I'll check out that service. Has anyone used it before?

why dont u just do cashback at walmart? u can get like $100 cashback when u buy something small. just do multiple transactions. thats what i do to avoid atm fees lol

That would take forever to get enough for my rent payment! I need like $2400 total.

I went through this exact situation last year. Here's what you can do: 1. Call the number on the back of your ReliaCard and request a temporary increase to your daily withdrawal limit. They sometimes can make exceptions. 2. If that doesn't work, ask your landlord if they'll accept a money order. You can purchase money orders at many grocery stores using your ReliaCard as a debit card. 3. Another option is to use the ReliaCard bill pay feature to send a check directly to your landlord. This can be set up through the ReliaCard website. 4. As others mentioned, you can also switch to direct deposit for future payments, which takes about 7-10 days to process. Hope this helps! The ReliaCard system definitely has its quirks.

Thank you so much for these suggestions! I hadn't thought about the money order option. I'll try calling ReliaCard first to see if they can increase my limit, and if not, I'll check if my grocery store does money orders. Really appreciate the detailed advice!

Yes! I ended up getting two money orders from the grocery store ($1000 each) and then withdrew $500 from an ATM. My landlord was understanding about the situation and gave me until tomorrow to get the remaining amount. I'm going to set up direct deposit for future payments to avoid this headache again. The money orders worked great though - just had to pay a small fee for each one.

Glad to hear you found a solution! The money order route is definitely underutilized - most people don't realize you can use debit cards for them at grocery stores. For anyone else reading this thread, I'd also suggest checking with your local credit unions. Some will let you do a cash advance on debit cards with lower fees than regular banks. And if you're dealing with recurring large payments like rent, setting up that direct deposit switch really is worth the initial hassle. Takes about a week but saves so much stress in the long run.

That's really helpful info about credit unions! I never thought about cash advances on debit cards. I'm definitely switching to direct deposit after this whole ordeal - lesson learned. Thanks to everyone who helped out with suggestions, this community is awesome for navigating all these ESD quirks!

Just want to add that if you're ever in this situation again, some banks will let you do a "cash advance" transaction at the teller using your ReliaCard as a debit card, even if it's not a US Bank branch. I had to do this once when I was traveling and needed cash quickly. They usually charge a small fee (like $3-5) but it can be worth it in emergencies. Also, if you have a Venmo or Cash App account, you can sometimes transfer money from your ReliaCard to those apps and then transfer to your bank account for faster access than the standard bank transfer option.

These are all really great tips! I had no idea about the cash advance option at other banks or using Venmo/Cash App as intermediary steps. The ReliaCard system seems way more complicated than it needs to be, but at least there are workarounds if you know about them. I'm definitely bookmarking this thread for future reference - seems like ReliaCard issues come up pretty frequently around here!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who's been dealing with ReliaCard for over a year now. The one-transaction-per-day rule at US Bank tellers is definitely real and super frustrating - I wish ESD would make this clearer upfront! For future reference, here's what I've learned works best for large withdrawals: - ATM withdrawal first thing in the morning ($1,025 max) - Then hit up grocery stores for money orders throughout the day - Some Walmarts and grocery stores let you do multiple small transactions for cash back if you space them out The direct deposit switch is 100% worth it though. I made the change about 6 months ago and haven't looked back. Takes about 10 business days to fully process, but then you avoid all these ReliaCard headaches entirely. You can still keep the card for emergencies if needed. Really glad you got it sorted with the money orders - that's become my go-to recommendation for anyone dealing with ReliaCard withdrawal limits!

This is such valuable info, thank you! I'm definitely making the switch to direct deposit after this experience. It's crazy that ESD doesn't explain these ReliaCard limitations better upfront - I had to learn about the one-transaction rule the hard way when I was stressed about paying rent. The money order solution ended up working perfectly for me, and now I know about all these other workarounds too. This thread should honestly be pinned somewhere for other people who run into the same issue!

This whole thread is so helpful! I'm new to unemployment benefits and just got my ReliaCard last week. I had no idea about any of these withdrawal limits or the one-transaction-per-day rule at US Bank. It's honestly pretty concerning that ESD doesn't make this stuff clearer when they send out the cards - seems like a lot of people are getting caught off guard when they need to access their benefits for essential expenses like rent. I'm definitely going to bookmark all these workarounds (money orders, cash advances, ATM + grocery store cash back) just in case I run into similar issues. And it sounds like switching to direct deposit is the way to go long-term. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and solutions - this is exactly the kind of practical advice that makes this community so valuable!

Welcome to the ReliaCard club! Yeah, it's really frustrating that they don't give you a heads up about all these quirks when they mail the card. I just went through this exact situation a few days ago and was totally blindsided by the withdrawal limits. Definitely save this thread - I wish I had known about the money order trick earlier! And seriously consider switching to direct deposit as soon as you can. The 10-day wait is annoying but worth it to avoid all these headaches down the road. Good luck with your benefits process!

This thread is incredibly thorough and helpful! I'm dealing with my own ReliaCard issues right now - tried to get cash for a car repair yesterday and hit the same one-transaction limit at US Bank. The teller was apologetic but said their hands were tied by the card rules. I had no idea about the money order option at grocery stores - that's genius! Also really appreciate everyone mentioning the direct deposit switch. I've been putting it off because I thought it would be a huge hassle, but after reading all these experiences it sounds like the temporary inconvenience is way better than dealing with these withdrawal restrictions every month. One quick question - for those who switched to direct deposit, did you have any issues with the timing of payments? Like did ESD still deposit on the same schedule or did it change when you switched from ReliaCard to direct deposit?

0 coins

Great question about the timing! When I switched to direct deposit about 3 months ago, the payment schedule stayed exactly the same - ESD still processes payments on their regular schedule (usually Tuesday nights for me). The only difference is instead of the funds hitting your ReliaCard, they go straight to your bank account. The switch itself took about 8 business days to fully process, and ESD sent me an email confirmation when it was complete. During that transition week I was worried about missing a payment, but they kept using the ReliaCard until the direct deposit was fully set up. Definitely recommend making the switch - no more ATM hunting or withdrawal limit stress!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Just got my ReliaCard two weeks ago and had no clue about these withdrawal restrictions. Tried to get cash for my security deposit yesterday and the US Bank teller gave me the same story about only one transaction per day. Super frustrating when you're already stressed about finances and then can't even access your own benefits properly. Reading through all these solutions is incredibly helpful though - especially the money order idea and the direct deposit switch. I'm definitely going to look into changing to direct deposit ASAP. It's ridiculous that ESD doesn't explain these limitations upfront when they send the card. You'd think they'd want to make it as easy as possible for people to access their benefits, not create all these hoops to jump through. Has anyone had luck calling ReliaCard customer service to complain about these policies? Or is it just something we have to work around?

I feel your frustration - it's such a shock when you first encounter these ReliaCard limits! I tried calling their customer service about the withdrawal restrictions a few months ago and honestly didn't get anywhere. The rep basically just read me the terms and conditions and said the policies are set by ESD and US Bank together, so they can't make exceptions. It was pretty much a waste of 30 minutes on hold. Your best bet is definitely the workarounds everyone's mentioned here - money orders are a lifesaver for large amounts, and the direct deposit switch is 100% worth doing even though it takes a week or so to process. I wish someone had told me about these options when I first got my card instead of having to figure it out the hard way during a rent crisis! This community has been so helpful for navigating all the ESD quirks that they don't explain properly.

Just wanted to add my experience as someone who recently went through this exact situation! I got hit with the same ReliaCard withdrawal limit surprise last month when trying to get cash for moving expenses. The one-transaction-per-day rule at US Bank is so poorly communicated - I felt totally blindsided. What ended up working for me was a combination approach: I did the max ATM withdrawal early in the morning, then went to three different grocery stores throughout the day to get money orders. Each store let me get up to $1,000 in money orders using my ReliaCard as a debit card. The fees were only like $1.50 per money order, which was way better than dealing with cash advance fees at other banks. I also want to echo what others have said about switching to direct deposit - I made the change right after this incident and it's been so much less stressful. The 7-10 day processing time feels long when you're in the middle of a crisis, but it's totally worth it for peace of mind going forward. Really appreciate everyone sharing their workarounds in this thread. It's crazy that we have to figure out these solutions on our own when ESD could just explain the ReliaCard limitations clearly from the start!

This is such a comprehensive breakdown of how to handle the ReliaCard withdrawal mess - thank you! The multiple grocery store approach for money orders is brilliant and something I never would have thought of. It's honestly ridiculous that we as community members have to crowdsource solutions to basic problems that ESD should be explaining clearly when they issue these cards. Your point about the poor communication really hits home. When you're already dealing with the stress of unemployment and then can't access your benefits when you need them most, it adds such an unnecessary layer of anxiety. I'm so glad this thread exists because it's turning into a comprehensive guide that's way more helpful than anything ESD provides officially. I'm definitely going to save all these workarounds for future reference, and seriously considering the direct deposit switch after reading everyone's positive experiences. Thanks for taking the time to share your specific strategy - the timing details and fee information are super helpful for anyone else who finds themselves in this situation!

This entire thread has been incredibly eye-opening as someone who just started receiving unemployment benefits! I had no idea the ReliaCard had so many hidden restrictions. The fact that there's a one-transaction-per-day limit at US Bank branches but they don't clearly explain this when they send the card is honestly unacceptable. Reading through everyone's experiences and solutions has been a lifesaver though. The money order strategy seems like the most reliable workaround for large payments, and I'm definitely going to switch to direct deposit based on all the positive feedback here. It's frustrating that we have to rely on community knowledge to navigate these basic benefit access issues that ESD should be making crystal clear from the start. Thank you to everyone who shared their specific strategies and timing details - this thread should honestly be required reading for anyone getting a ReliaCard! Going to bookmark this for sure.

Absolutely agree - this thread has become an invaluable resource! As someone new to the ReliaCard system, I'm shocked at how many crucial details ESD leaves out of their initial communication. The one-transaction daily limit at US Bank should be prominently displayed, not buried in fine print that most people probably never read thoroughly. What really stands out to me is how this community has essentially created a comprehensive troubleshooting guide that's more useful than any official ESD documentation. The money order workaround, ATM timing strategies, direct deposit switch process - all of this practical knowledge came from people sharing their real-world experiences dealing with these frustrating limitations. I'm planning to proactively switch to direct deposit before I even encounter these withdrawal issues, thanks to everyone's advice here. It's unfortunate that we have to anticipate and work around these problems instead of having a straightforward benefits system, but at least we have this community knowledge to help navigate the maze of ReliaCard restrictions!
