CalWORKs EBT Card - Can't withdraw cash for rent but purchases work fine. Anyone experience this?
My CalWORKs EBT card is giving me weird issues this month and I need to pay rent ASAP. I can use the card for online grocery purchases and even get cash back when buying stuff at stores, but when I try to withdraw actual cash from ATMs to pay my landlord, it's not working. I've tried multiple ATMs and different times of day (even during business hours). My balance shows normal when I check BenefitsCal online. I haven't reached my withdrawal limits or anything. Has anyone dealt with this before? My landlord only takes cash/money orders and I need to pay by Friday before late fees kick in. I've tried calling the county office but keep getting stuck in the automated system.

did u try using it at the bank counter?? sometimes the ATMs have limits but if u go inside the bank that has the CA EBT logo and talk to a teller they can give u more cash. also make sure ur card isnt damaged like the strip on back. mine stopped working once and it was cuz the strip was scratched.

•I didn't try inside a bank yet! That's a good idea, thanks. The card looks fine physically - like I said it works for purchases and even cash back at stores. It's just direct ATM withdrawals that aren't working. I'll try a bank counter tomorrow morning.

This happened to me a few months ago! My EBT card would work everywhere except ATMs. Turns out there was a block on my account because the system flagged it for suspicious activity (I had made a purchase in another county while visiting family). Call the number on the back of your card and speak to EBT customer service - completely different than county CalWORKs office. They can see if there's a special block on cash withdrawals.

•Omg that might be it! I did travel to my sister's place in another county last weekend and used my card there. I'll try calling the EBT customer service specifically instead of the county. Thanks so much!

Another possibility is that your PIN might have been temporarily locked if you entered it incorrectly too many times. The EBT system can be very sensitive about this. When you call the EBT customer service number (not the county CalWORKs office), they can unlock your PIN or help you reset it if needed. Also, if you've recently been reapproved for CalWORKs, sometimes there's a 24-48 hour delay before cash access is fully restored, even if your balance shows online. Make sure to specifically mention you can make purchases but not ATM withdrawals. This helps them narrow down the issue faster.

•This is really helpful info. I did get reapproved last week actually, so maybe that's related! I'll definitely mention the specific issue when I call. Would this kind of problem fix itself automatically after a certain time period or do I need to get them to fix it?

•If it's related to your recent reapproval, it might fix itself within 48 hours. But honestly, with rent due soon, I wouldn't wait to see if it resolves on its own. Definitely call to get it addressed directly. Usually they can fix these kinds of issues while you're on the phone, especially PIN-related ones or security blocks.

I spent 3 HOURS trying to reach someone at the EBT customer service line last month for a different issue!!! Kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Finally used Claimyr.com to get through - they called and waited on hold for me, then connected me once a real person was on the line. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Totally worth it for urgent issues like rent payment. The EBT customer service CAN fix these problems but actually reaching them is the hard part!

•does that actually work? ive never heard of it lol

•Yes! It really does work. The whole point is they wait on hold instead of you. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days. Got connected to a rep in about 20 minutes and they fixed my issue right away.

mine does this sometimes its because theres a daily withdrawl limit. if u allready did cashback at the store the atm wont let u take out more cash that same day. try tomorrow or go to the bank counter like somone else said. also some atms charge fees and take it from ur max amount.

•I thought about the daily limit but I haven't done any cash back or withdrawals in over a week, so I don't think that's it. I'm definitely going to try the bank counter approach tomorrow while I wait on hold with customer service. Thanks!

This is definitely something the EBT customer service line can resolve, not the county CalWORKs office. There are several possible causes: 1. Security block from unusual transaction patterns (like using your card in a different county) 2. System delay from recent benefit recertification or approval 3. Temporary ATM-specific restriction 4. PIN issues or temporary security lockout In the meantime, if you need immediate cash for rent, remember you can do multiple smaller cash back transactions at grocery stores or pharmacies as a workaround. Many stores will let you get $40-100 cash back per transaction, so you could make several small purchases (like a $1 item each time) and request maximum cash back until you have enough for rent. It's not ideal but works in a pinch.

•Thank you! I'm going to try the multiple cash back idea today just in case. My rent is $1050 so it'll take quite a few transactions, but at least it's a solution if I can't get through to EBT customer service or fix the ATM issue. Really appreciate the detailed explanation of possible causes too.

did you check if youre getting the actual cash benefits tho? sometimes they give food stamps but not cash aid if u didnt do ur WTW hours. my friend had this where she could use the card for food but not get cash and it was bcoz she missed her appointment with the job counselor.

•I definitely have cash benefits showing on my account online. When I log into BenefitsCal, it shows my full cash aid amount was deposited on the 1st. And like I mentioned, I can get cash back when making purchases at stores, just not at ATMs. So the money is definitely there and accessible somehow, just not through ATMs for some reason.

Any update? Were you able to resolve this issue? I'm curious if it was related to your recent recertification or if it was something else entirely.

•Yes! Finally got it fixed this morning. Called the EBT customer service number (not county) and after explaining everything, they confirmed there was a security block on ATM withdrawals because of my out-of-county purchase. Apparently it's an automatic fraud protection thing. They removed the block while I was on the phone, and I was able to withdraw cash right after. Thanks everyone for your help!
