CalWORKs EBT card not working at ATMs - can't access Cash Aid for April rent
Anyone having problems with their CalWORKs EBT card at ATMs today? My Cash Aid was supposed to deposit yesterday (I checked BenefitsCal and it shows 'issued') but I've tried 3 different ATMs and none of them will let me withdraw money. I NEED to pay my landlord tomorrow or he's threatening eviction notice. I tried calling the EBT customer service number but it's just a recording telling me about card balance. Is there a system outage or something? I'm seriously freaking out right now because I need this money for rent!!!

•Have you been able to reach anyone at the county? I'm gonna try calling them tomorrow but I'm worried about getting through in time.

This happened last month too. There might be a system-wide issue with the EBT processing network. A few things to try: 1) Make sure you're using an ATM that doesn't charge fees for EBT withdrawals (Bank of America, MoneyPass, etc.) 2) Try using your card at a grocery store for a cash back transaction instead of an ATM 3) If you have access to the EBT mobile app, check if your balance is showing correctly there If none of that works, you'll need to contact your county CalWORKs office directly. The EBT customer service line only handles basic card functions but can't resolve deposit issues.

•Thanks, I'll try the cash back at the store idea! But I already confirmed my balance shows the money is there through the app, that's what's making me so crazy - the money is supposedly there but I can't get to it.

my worker told me they had a system update this weekend thats why some payments are delayed. but if its showing issued on ur account they should fix it by tomorrow. i had this happen before and i told my landlord and showed him the benefitscal screen showing my payment and he gave me 2 extra days. maybe try that?

•My landlord is NOT understanding at all. He's already mad about last month when my redetermination was delayed. I'm so stressed.

I work with CalWORKs recipients, and this is unfortunately quite common at the beginning of the month when many benefits are issued simultaneously. Some things to know: - If BenefitsCal shows 'issued,' your funds have been released but may take 24-48 hours to be fully available - Some ATMs have daily withdrawal limits that might be lower than your full benefit amount - There are sometimes processing delays between when funds are 'issued' and when they're available on your EBT card If you need to speak with your caseworker urgently about this situation, I'd recommend contacting your county office first thing tomorrow morning. If you're worried about eviction, ask to speak with a housing specialist who can help with emergency situations and possibly provide documentation to your landlord.

This is exactly why I HATE the EBT card system! They can glitch it whenever they want and we can't do anything! I bet if it was their rent money they'd fix it in 5 minutes! I've had this happen 3 times in the last year and each time they say "oh it's just a temporary issue" but WE are the ones who get late fees and eviction threats! The system is designed to make us fail I swear.

I had the same problem last month and waited on hold for 2 hours trying to reach someone at the county office. Finally I used claimyr.com and got through to a real person in like 20 minutes. They have this service where they wait on hold for you and call you back when someone answers. Saved my sanity honestly. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE The worker I spoke to explained there was a processing delay and manually pushed through my funds. Worth a try if you're desperate to reach someone about your rent money.

•Thank you!! I'll definitely try this tomorrow morning. Did they charge you for the service? I literally have $0 until I can access my benefits.

•They do charge something but you don't pay until after they get someone on the line for you. Since I needed my rent money it was worth it to me. Plus my county office literally NEVER answers.

Did you try these troubleshooting steps yet? 1. Confirm your PIN is correct (sometimes people forget they changed it) 2. Make sure you're not exceeding daily withdrawal limits 3. Try a POS cash back transaction instead of ATM 4. Check if your card is damaged (cracks, bent magnetic strip) For rent issues, remember that California law requires landlords to accept late rent for a certain period before taking action. They must provide proper written notice before eviction proceedings, and an eviction can't happen overnight. If you can show proof the money has been issued, that should help your case.

•My PIN definitely works because I can check the balance, it just won't let me withdraw. I'm going to try the grocery store cashback idea tomorrow morning. Thanks for the landlord info - that makes me feel a little better.

•UPDATE: I went to FoodMaxx and was able to buy some groceries AND get cash back! Seems like it was just the ATMs having issues. Going to withdraw the rest at another store tomorrow. Thanks everyone for your advice!
