EBT cash withdrawal issues after CalFresh deposit - need to pay bills today!

I'm freaking out because my CalFresh benefits just loaded onto my EBT card yesterday, but I can't access the cash portion to pay my bills! I've already tried two ATMs (one on North Chester and another on 17th Street) and neither are working with my EBT card. My rent and utilities are due TODAY and I need to deposit money into my regular bank account to make these payments. Does anyone know which ATMs are currently working for EBT cash withdrawals? I've already wasted gas driving around and I'm running out of time before everything closes. Is the system down today or something? Help please!

Have u tried walgreens atms? they usually work with ebt and don't charge fees. the one on calloway worked for me yesterday

I didn't think about Walgreens! Thank you so much, I'll try that one next. Do you know if there's a limit on how much you can take out at once? I need to get at least $650 for my rent payment.

EBT cash withdrawals can be a nightmare! From my experience working with CalFresh clients, there was a system maintenance scheduled for today that might be affecting some ATMs. Not all machines will be down though. Try any Walmart MoneyCenter - they're usually reliable for EBT cash withdrawals and their system runs separate from many bank ATMs. Also remember you can get cash back with purchase at most grocery stores (Walmart, FoodMaxx, etc). Just buy something small like a candy bar and request cash back up to the store's limit.

I didn't know about the system maintenance! That explains why both machines I tried weren't working. The Walmart idea is really helpful - there's one about 10 minutes from me. Do you know if I can withdraw the full amount I need ($650) there or will I hit a daily limit?

This happens ALL the time with EBT cash benefits. Most banks limit EBT withdrawals to $500 per day anyway, so you might need to make two withdrawals over two days for your rent. The most reliable place I've found is actually inside grocery stores at their customer service desk - Vons, Albertsons, and Food 4 Less will all do EBT cash withdrawals right at the counter. Just bring your ID and EBT card. Also, for future reference, you can set up direct deposit of your cash benefits to your regular bank account through the BenefitsCal website and avoid this hassle completely.

Thank you for these suggestions! I didn't realize there was a daily limit of $500... that's going to be a problem since my rent is $650 and due today. I'll try the grocery store customer service desk idea. And I definitely need to set up that direct deposit option - didn't even know that was possible!

I've been dealing with CalFresh/EBT issues for years, and unfortunately ATM availability for EBT cash benefits has been getting worse. The best solution I've found is calling the county directly to verify there are no holds on your benefits or system issues. If you're having trouble getting through to a real person at the county CalFresh office (which is common!), I recommend using Claimyr. It's a service that gets you through to an actual CalFresh worker without waiting on hold for hours. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration when I had a similar emergency with accessing my benefits. For your immediate problem though, most WinCo stores process EBT cash withdrawals at their customer service counter, and they don't have the same limits as ATMs. Worth checking if you have one nearby.

Ugh I'm having the exact same issue today too! None of the Bank of America ATMs are accepting my EBT card for cash withdrawal. I think there's definitely a system-wide problem. I eventually went to the customer service desk at FoodMaxx and was able to get cash there, but they had a $200 limit per transaction. Had to do multiple transactions and got charged the service fee each time which is so unfair when it's not my fault the ATMs aren't working! Try grocery stores with customer service desks.

Thanks for confirming it's not just me! I'm going to try the customer service desk route. So frustrating to pay multiple fees though - I already have barely enough to cover my bills. 😔

UPDATE FOR EVERYONE: I just checked with the county office, and there IS a system-wide issue with EBT cash withdrawals at certain ATMs today. They're working to resolve it, but in the meantime: 1. In-store customer service counters at most major grocery chains ARE working for cash withdrawals 2. There's a known compatibility issue specifically with Bank of America and Wells Fargo ATMs today 3. The daily withdrawal limit is still $500 per day (this is state-regulated, not by individual banks) 4. If you need more than $500, you can request a temporary limit increase by calling the EBT customer service line, but only for verified emergencies Hope this helps everyone having issues today!

Thank you SO MUCH for this update! This explains everything. I'll head to a grocery store right away. Really appreciate you checking with the county office and sharing this info!

Not everyone has understanding landlords. Mine charges $75 for EACH DAY late. So frustrating how the system fails people who need it most.

UPDATE: I was able to get my cash! I went to the FoodMaxx customer service desk like several of you suggested, and they were able to process my EBT cash withdrawal. Had to do it in two transactions because of the limit, but at least I got what I needed for rent. They confirmed there's an issue with bank ATMs today. Thanks everyone for your help! I'm definitely setting up direct deposit to my bank account for next month to avoid this hassle.

Glad you got it sorted! For the direct deposit setup, make sure you have your bank account info ready when you log into BenefitsCal. It takes about 3 business days to process the change, and your next benefit deposit will go straight to your bank account. It's much more convenient!
