CalWORKs EBT card not working at ATMs - can't withdraw my Cash Aid
Just got my CalWORKs payment loaded onto my card yesterday but when I tried to take cash out at 3 different ATMs, none of them would let me withdraw anything! The screen just says 'unable to process transaction' each time. My rent is due in 2 days and I NEED this money. My balance shows the correct amount when I check it, but I can't get the cash off. Has anyone else had this problem with their EBT card? Is the system down or something? I tried calling the EBT customer service but got stuck in this endless phone menu. Help!!

•Yeah I bought groceries with the CalFresh part no problem. It's just the Cash Aid part that won't let me withdraw at ATMs. I need actual CASH for my rent!!

This happened to me last month. There are a few possible issues: 1. Did you recently change your PIN? Sometimes it takes 24-48 hours to fully activate in the system for cash withdrawals. 2. Are you trying to withdraw at ATMs that are surcharge-free for EBT? Not all ATMs allow EBT cash withdrawals. Bank of America, MoneyPass, and AllPoint ATMs usually work with CalWORKs EBT cards. 3. There might be a daily withdrawal limit that's lower than your total balance. 4. Sometimes there's a temporary system outage affecting EBT cash withdrawals. Try going to a grocery store like Food 4 Less or Walmart where you can request cash back with a purchase. That often works even when ATMs don't. You can usually get up to $200 cash back per transaction.

•Thank you! I've had this PIN for months so that's not it. I tried both the ATM at my regular grocery store (that normally works) and two bank ATMs. I'm going to try the cash back with purchase idea. Can I do multiple transactions to get enough for my rent?

Check if your card is damaged!! My card stopped working at ATMs when the magnetic strip got scratched. I could still buy stuff but couldn't get cash. Had to request a replacement card. Also check if your monthly withdrawal limit has been reached - sometimes if you've done a lot of small withdrawals you hit a monthly max. The EBT customer service number is TORTURE to get through on. 😫

•My card looks fine, no scratches or anything. And I haven't made any withdrawals yet this month so I shouldn't be at any limit. Why do they make it so HARD to access our own money??

The EBT system was down in some areas yesterday according to the news. Maybe try again today?

This is usually a temporary issue, but since your rent is due soon, you need a quick solution. Here are steps to try: 1. First, try the cash back method at stores others mentioned. You can do multiple transactions if needed to get enough cash. 2. If that doesn't work, you need to speak with someone at your county CalWORKs office immediately. They can verify if there's a hold on your account or another issue preventing cash access. 3. If it's a system-wide issue, they can document your situation and sometimes provide emergency assistance so you don't fall behind on rent. The most important thing is to get through to a real person at your county office. I was having the same issue getting through their phone lines until I tried Claimyr. It's a service that gets you through to a live person at the CalWORKs office without waiting on hold for hours. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE and sign up at claimyr.com. It saved me when I had an urgent issue with my benefits last month.

•Thank you for the detailed advice. I'm going to try the cash back method right now. If that doesn't work I'll check out that Claimyr thing because waiting on hold forever isn't an option with my toddler. Really appreciate the help!

THE COUNTY ALWAYS DOES THIS!!! They put some kind of freeze on our accounts without telling us and then we can't pay our bills on time and get late fees and eviction notices. I bet if you finally get through to someone they'll say "oh yeah we needed some verification" that they never bothered to tell you about. The whole system is designed to make us fail I swear.

•I don't think I'm missing anything... I just did my SAR7 last month and my WTW hours are all reported. I'm gonna have to see if I can get through to someone. This is stressing me out so bad.

Just checking back - were you able to get cash back at a store or get through to someone at the county? If multiple locations are having the same issue, it's likely an account-specific problem rather than a general system outage.

•UPDATE: I was able to get cash back at the grocery store!! Had to do 3 separate small purchases to get enough for rent, but it worked! So weird that the ATMs aren't working though. Thanks everyone for your help!
