Confused about CalWORKs EBT cash withdrawal limits/holding periods - need help ASAP
Hi everyone, I just got my CalWORKs payment deposited yesterday on my EBT card and tried to withdraw the cash today but the ATM wouldn't let me take it out. I've never had this problem before. Does anyone know if there's some kind of waiting period now before you can withdraw cash from your EBT? I have rent due in 3 days and I'm starting to panic. Called the EBT customer service number but after 40 minutes on hold I gave up. The county office is closed until Monday and I really need this figured out before then.

•Thank you! I'll try again tomorrow morning. Do you know if all the money becomes available at once or is there a daily limit on cash withdrawals? I need to take out almost all of it for rent.

There's usually a 24-hour holding period after your Cash Aid is deposited before you can withdraw the full amount. This is a security measure implemented in 2023. However, there are also daily withdrawal limits which vary by county (typically $500-$1000). Make sure you're using an ATM that's CalWORKs-approved to avoid fees. The surcharge-free ATM network includes Bank of America, Chase, MoneyPass, and AllPoint locations. If you need immediate assistance with verifying when your funds will be fully available, you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a county representative. They have a service that helps you skip the phone queues. I used it last month when I had a similar issue and got through in minutes instead of hours. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE

•I had no idea about the 24-hour hold! Thank you for explaining that. I've been on CalWORKs for 2 years and this is the first time I've had this problem, but I usually don't try to withdraw the money right away. I'll look into those ATMs. If I can't get it tomorrow I might try that Claimyr thing because I absolutely can't be late on rent again.

Are you trying to take it all out at once??? That might be the problem. I think theres a limit like $500 per day or something. Try taking out smaller amounts if you need a lot.

•You're right, there are daily withdrawal limits. In most California counties, the standard daily ATM withdrawal limit for CalWORKs EBT cards is $500, though some counties have raised it to $800 after the recent benefit increase. The 24-hour holding period is also standard policy, though it's not always enforced consistently which is why some people don't notice it. Today is Saturday, so if you got your deposit Friday, you should definitely be able to access funds by Sunday. Make sure to check your balance through the EBT mobile app or by calling the number on the back of your card before attempting withdrawal again.

My cousin had this exact same problem last month!! The county changed somthing in the system and didnt tell anyone. So frustrating how they expect us to pay bills on time but then they hold our money!!! Make sure you keep your withdrawal receipt because sometimes the ATM says it gave you money even when it doesn't and then you have to file a dispute which takes FOREVER to resolve.

•THIS!!! The county is always changing rules without proper notification! I've been on CalWORKs for 5 years now and they've changed the cash withdrawal process THREE TIMES. First they added the 24-hour hold, then they reduced the daily limit amount, now they've added some new verification step at certain ATMs. It's RIDICULOUS when they know we need this money for essential bills!! OP, if you're in a real bind and Monday is too late, you might qualify for emergency assistance through your county office. Some counties have weekend emergency lines specifically for these situations. Check your approval notice for emergency contact info.

sometimes its not about the waiting period but about which atm ur using. not all atms let u get cash from ebt even if they accept the card for balance checks. ive found that walmart money centers and bank of america atms always work for me but the random ones at gas stations are hit or miss.

Update from 2025: CalWORKs implemented some new security measures for cash withdrawals. Here's what you need to know: 1. 24-hour holding period after deposit before full withdrawal is available (security measure) 2. Daily withdrawal limits (usually $500-$800 depending on your county) 3. First withdrawal of a new benefit month may require additional verification If you want to avoid ATM fees, use: - Bank of America ATMs - Golden 1 Credit Union ATMs - MoneyPass network ATMs - Select grocery stores that offer cash back with purchase You can check if your funds are available for withdrawal by: - Checking the CalWORKs EBT Mobile App - Calling the EBT Customer Service line (early morning or late evening has shorter wait times) - Checking your balance at an ATM (this doesn't always show if funds are on hold though) If you need the money urgently for rent, some counties offer emergency assistance to prevent eviction. Call your caseworker on Monday if you still can't access your funds.

•Thank you for this detailed information! I tried again this morning and was able to withdraw $500, so I think it was both the holding period and the daily limit causing my problem. I'll get the rest tomorrow which will still be in time for rent. Really appreciate everyone's help!

•@Fatima Al-Qasimi So glad you got it sorted out! For future reference, you can also set up text alerts through the EBT app to notify you when your benefits are deposited AND when they re'fully available for withdrawal. This way you won t'have to guess about the timing. Also, if you ever need to withdraw large amounts for rent, some counties allow you to request a temporary increase to your daily withdrawal limit if you call ahead and explain it s'for housing costs.

I'm glad you got your money sorted out! This is such a common issue and it's frustrating how the system works. For anyone else reading this thread, I wanted to add that if you're ever in a similar situation where you need emergency cash access, some counties also have agreements with certain check cashing places that will advance you a portion of your benefits for a small fee. It's not ideal because of the fees, but it can be a lifesaver when you're facing eviction. Also, if you have a good relationship with your landlord, many will accept a screenshot of your EBT balance as proof that payment is coming and give you a day or two extension. The key is communicating with them before you're late rather than after.

•This is really helpful advice! I had no idea about the check cashing advance option or that landlords might accept EBT balance screenshots. Communication is definitely key - I've found that most landlords are understanding if you reach out proactively rather than waiting until after you're late. It's also worth noting that some counties have tenant assistance programs that can help with emergency rent payments if you're still having trouble accessing your benefits. Thanks for sharing these practical tips!

As someone who's been navigating CalWORKs for a while, I wanted to add that it's really important to keep track of when your benefits are deposited each month because that 24-hour hold period is pretty consistent now. I started marking it on my calendar so I know exactly when I can access the cash. Also, if you're ever worried about ATM fees eating into your benefits, some grocery stores like Vons and Safeway let you get cash back when you buy something small with your EBT card - just make sure to ask if there's a fee first. The whole system can be confusing and they definitely don't make it easy to understand all the rules, but this community has been so helpful for figuring things out!

•That's such a smart idea to mark the deposit dates on your calendar! I never thought of tracking the 24-hour hold period that way. The grocery store cash back tip is really good too - I've been losing so much money to ATM fees without realizing there were alternatives. It's really frustrating how they don't explain any of these rules clearly when you first get approved for benefits. You just have to figure it all out through trial and error or by finding helpful communities like this one. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Just wanted to add that if anyone is having trouble getting through to the EBT customer service line, the best times to call are usually right when they open (around 7 AM) or later in the evening before they close. I've noticed the wait times are much shorter then compared to calling during the middle of the day. Also, if you're ever stuck in a similar situation on a weekend, some 24-hour grocery stores like certain Walmarts have customer service desks that can help you check your EBT card status or even call the EBT line on your behalf. Not all locations do this, but it's worth asking if you're really desperate. The whole system definitely needs better communication about these policies!

•Those are really great tips about the best times to call! I had no idea that some Walmart customer service desks would help with EBT issues - that's actually amazing and could be so helpful in emergency situations like this. It's honestly ridiculous that we have to figure out all these workarounds just to access our own benefits. The lack of clear communication from the county about policy changes is so frustrating. Like, they'll change withdrawal rules or add holding periods but never send out any kind of notice to let people know what's happening. Thank you for sharing these practical solutions - this whole thread has been incredibly helpful for understanding how the system actually works versus how it's supposed to work!

I work at a county office and can confirm that the 24-hour hold is now standard across most California counties as of 2023. It was implemented to reduce fraud and give the system time to verify deposits. The policy should have been communicated better to recipients, but unfortunately many counties didn't do a good job with outreach. A few additional tips that might help others: - If you're ever completely unable to access your cash benefits due to a system error, you can request an emergency replacement card at your county office, but this usually takes 7-10 business days - Some counties offer emergency cash assistance if your EBT card is compromised or if there are system-wide issues preventing access to benefits - Always keep your receipts when withdrawing cash - if an ATM malfunctions and doesn't dispense money but shows a withdrawal, the receipt is crucial for filing a dispute The system definitely isn't perfect and I understand how stressful it can be when you need access to your benefits immediately. I'm glad you were able to get your money sorted out for rent!

•Thank you for the insider perspective! It's really helpful to hear from someone who works at a county office and can confirm these policy changes. The 24-hour hold makes sense from a fraud prevention standpoint, but you're absolutely right that the communication to recipients has been terrible. I had no idea about the emergency replacement card option or that some counties offer emergency cash assistance for system issues - that could be a lifesaver for people in desperate situations. It's frustrating that we have to learn about these options through community forums rather than official channels. Do you know if there's any plan to improve the notification system when policies change? It seems like a simple email or text alert system could prevent a lot of the confusion and panic that people experience.

I've been dealing with CalWORKs for about a year now and I just want to say how grateful I am for communities like this where we can actually get real, practical help from each other. The official channels are so hard to navigate and half the time the county workers don't even seem to know about policy changes themselves. Reading through everyone's responses here taught me more about how the EBT system actually works than anything I ever got from my caseworker. It's really sad that we have to crowdsource basic information about our own benefits, but at least we have each other. For anyone new to CalWORKs reading this - bookmark this thread! The tips about timing, ATM locations, daily limits, and emergency options are gold. And definitely consider setting up those text alerts someone mentioned - I'm going to do that right now.

•I completely agree! This thread has been incredibly eye-opening and shows just how much we rely on each other to navigate these systems. It's honestly shocking that basic information about withdrawal limits, holding periods, and emergency options isn't clearly explained when you first get approved. I've been on CalWORKs for about 6 months and my caseworker never mentioned half of this stuff - like the text alerts, the grocery store cash back options, or that some counties have emergency assistance for system issues. It really shouldn't be this hard to access our own benefits! Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and tips, especially @Kylo Ren for the insider perspective from the county office. This is exactly the kind of real-world information that should be standard in orientation materials but somehow never is. Definitely bookmarking this thread and setting up those text alerts too!
