CalWORKs benefits not accessible at Bank of America - can't withdraw cash for rent tomorrow
Super stressed because I can't access my CalWORKs cash aid from my EBT card at Bank of America today. I tried 3 different ATMs and even went inside the branch. They said something about a system issue but couldn't give me any details! I've got rent due tomorrow and literally have no way to get my money. Called the number on the back of my EBT card but it's just automated messages that don't help. Has anyone else had this problem today? What do I do if I can't get my money out by tomorrow? My landlord only takes cash and I'm already on thin ice with him for late payments. If I miss rent again he said he's serving me with eviction papers!!

This happened to me last month! Check if you've hit your daily withdrawal limit. BofA only allows $1000 per day from EBT cards. If your rent is more than that, you might need to wait until tomorrow to withdraw the rest. Another possibility is that your semi-annual report (SAR7) wasn't processed on time and your benefits got put on hold. The county sometimes doesn't process them right away even if you submitted everything on time.

•My rent is only $925 so I don't think it's the daily limit. And I just did my recertification interview like 3 weeks ago so everything should be fine with my case. I even got the approval notice in the mail last week! It's just so frustrating that there's no one to actually TALK TO about this.

•I tried buying something at Target with cash back and it still didn't work! The card got declined completely. Did yours work anywhere?

There's a system-wide EBT processing issue happening today. It's not just your card - it's affecting thousands of people across multiple counties. I work at a nonprofit that assists CalWORKs recipients and we've been getting calls about this all day. The state is aware and working on it, but no ETA for resolution yet. Unfortunately, the county workers don't have any more information than what I just shared. For your immediate rent situation, you might want to: 1. Notify your landlord immediately and show proof of your benefits if possible 2. Check if your county has an emergency assistance program 3. Call 211 to see if there are local rent assistance programs that can help

•Thank you so much for explaining what's going on! At least now I know it's not just me. I'll definitely call my landlord and explain, but honestly he's not very understanding. Do you know how long these system issues usually take to get fixed?

I've been dealing with CalWORKs for 6 years and this happens AT LEAST twice a year. The system goes down and nobody bothers to tell us until we're panicking about paying bills. Last time my car got repossessed because I couldn't make my payment on time. They NEVER compensate us for late fees or the stress they put us through. It's ridiculous!!!

Have you tried calling your county worker directly? Sometimes they can issue emergency aid or at least give you a letter explaining the system issue that you can show your landlord. The problem is getting through to them - the phone lines are always jammed. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) last time I had an urgent issue and couldn't get through on the regular line. They have this system that waits on hold for you and calls you back when a worker answers. Saved me hours of waiting. Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Worth a try if you need to talk to someone at the county asap about getting emergency assistance while the system is down.

•I'll try anything at this point! I've been trying to call my worker all day and it just goes to voicemail. I'll check out that service. I really need someone at the county to help me figure this out before tomorrow.

Something similar happened to me and it turned out there was a fraud hold on my account. Someone had tried to use my card number in another state! You should definitely call the EBT customer service line (not the automated system). Press 0 repeatedly until you get a human. The wait might be long but they can tell you exactly what's happening with your card.

•Oh that's scary! I've been pressing 0 but it just keeps cycling me through the menu. I'll keep trying though. I really hope it's not fraud 😫

•Yes I checked online and my benefits are definitely there! That's what makes it so frustrating. I can SEE my money but can't access it!

UPDATE: The state just announced the EBT system should be back online within 24 hours. They're prioritizing cash aid access. In the meantime, if you need emergency help with rent, call your county office and ask specifically for the "immediate need" program. This is designed for situations exactly like yours. Make sure to document everything - take screenshots of failed ATM transactions, save any error messages, note the times you tried to access your benefits. This will help if you need to file for any assistance with late fees.

•Thank you so much for the update! I managed to get through to my worker using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above. They confirmed it's a system issue and are sending me an email I can show my landlord explaining the situation. They also said they can help with late fees if my landlord charges me. Such a relief!

I hope everyone affected by this files a complaint with the state. Go to cdss.ca.gov and find the complaint form. The more of us that complain, the more pressure there is to fix these ongoing system problems. They can't keep leaving families stranded like this!

•This is really good advice. I also recommend contacting your county Board of Supervisors. They have more power to address systemic issues than individual caseworkers. The squeaky wheel gets the grease when it comes to CalWORKs problems!
