ReliaCard spending limits preventing rent payment - ESD debit card restrictions?
Really frustrated right now. I tried to use my ReliaCard to pay my $1850 rent today and discovered there seems to be some kind of spending limit. I managed to get about $1200 in money orders yesterday, but today when I tried to get the remaining $650 either as cash or another money order, the transaction keeps getting declined. The balance is definitely there - I checked online and by phone. This has never happened before and my rent is due TODAY. Does anyone know if ESD ReliaCards have a 24-hour spending limit? The customer service wait time is 2+ hours, and I can't afford late fees on my rent. Any advice on how to get the rest of my money off this card ASAP?

•Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. My landlord isn't exactly the understanding type. Do you know if there's any way to get an emergency override or something?

The ReliaCard does have daily transaction limits. For ATM withdrawals, it's typically $1,000 per day. For purchases and over-the-counter withdrawals at banks, it's usually $5,000 per day. However, money orders often have their own separate limit category which can be around $1,500-$2,000 per day depending on your card settings. That's probably why you're running into this issue. Two possible solutions: 1. Try going to a bank that accepts Visa and request a cash advance over the counter instead of a money order 2. See if your landlord will accept a partial payment today and the remainder tomorrow when your limits reset You can also call the number on the back of your ReliaCard to request a temporary limit increase, but that usually takes 1-2 business days to process.

•Thank you! I'll try the cash advance option right now. Do I need to go to US Bank specifically or can I try any bank?

•Any bank that accepts Visa should be able to process a cash advance from your ReliaCard. Just bring your ID and know that some banks may charge a small fee if you're not a customer there. Good luck!

I HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM last month!!!! The stupid ReliaCard limits are ridiculous when you're trying to pay important bills. I spent 3 HOURS trying to get someone on their customer service line with no luck. I ended up having to split my rent payment which made my landlord super mad and he charged me a late fee anyway. The whole system is designed to make things harder for people on unemployment!

•That's exactly what I'm worried about. My landlord already gives me attitude about being on unemployment. Did you eventually get through to customer service? Was there anything they could do?

•I finally got through the next day and they said they "couldn't do anything" about the limits and that I should have "planned better" for my expenses. SO FRUSTRATING!!!

I work at a financial services company and deal with these prepaid cards often. The ReliaCard typically has these limits: - ATM withdrawals: $1,000/day - Purchase transactions: $5,000/day - Money orders specifically: Often limited to $1,000-$2,000/day The issue is that money orders are categorized differently than regular purchases. Your card isn't seeing the total spending, it's specifically limiting the money order category. Try these workarounds: 1. Go to a US Bank branch specifically (they issue the ReliaCard) and request a cash withdrawal 2. Use the card directly to make a payment if your landlord accepts card payments (even with a fee, it might be worth it) 3. Transfer the funds to a personal bank account through the ReliaCard app/website if you have that set up The limits should reset at midnight, but that doesn't help with today's deadline.

Have you tried calling your landlord to explain the situation? I've been a property manager and usually if someone communicates BEFORE the rent is late and has proof they're trying to pay (like your receipt for the partial payment), most landlords will waive the late fee. Worth a shot!

•I just tried calling him and left a voicemail with my situation. Fingers crossed he's reasonable about it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've been helping people with ESD issues for months now, and the ReliaCard limits are a common frustration. If you're really stuck trying to reach customer service, you might want to try Claimyr.com - they can get you connected to a live agent much faster than waiting on hold. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 showing how it works. It saved me hours when I had a similar issue with my card being locked after trying to make a large purchase. Worth considering if you're in a time crunch with that rent deadline.

•Thanks, I might check that out if I can't get this resolved soon. Did they actually help with your ReliaCard issue or just with regular ESD questions?

•They got me through to U.S. Bank's ReliaCard department which is the same customer service line you'd call directly, but without the 2+ hour wait. The service just helps you skip the hold time, then you talk directly to the same agents who can help with limits, card issues, etc.

doesnt help u right now but for next time try setting up direct deposit to ur regular bank account instead of using the reliacard. way less hassle and no stupid limits

•Yeah, that would definitely be better. I didn't realize the ReliaCard would be such a pain when I first set up my unemployment.

•Update: I took everyone's advice and tried multiple things. First, I did get through to my landlord who agreed to waive the late fee if I pay the remaining amount tomorrow. Then I also went to a US Bank branch and was able to get a $500 cash advance over the counter (they said that has a different limit than money orders). So I'm getting most of the remaining amount today after all! Thanks for all the help everyone!

Glad you got it mostly sorted out! Just a heads up for anyone else dealing with this - you can also try using the card for bill pay through your bank's online system if they offer that service. Some banks let you pay rent directly with a debit card and it might bypass the money order limits. Also, Walmart and some grocery stores have different daily limits for money orders than other places, so if you're stuck again you could try shopping around. The whole ReliaCard system is definitely frustrating when you need access to your own money!

•That's really good to know about the different limits at different stores! I had no idea Walmart might have different money order limits than other places. This whole experience has been such a learning curve - I never expected so many complications just trying to access my own unemployment funds. The bill pay option through online banking sounds like it could be a game changer for future rent payments too. Thanks for the additional tips!

Just wanted to add another tip that might help others - if you have a credit union account, they're often more flexible with cash advances from prepaid cards than big banks. I had a similar issue with my ReliaCard last year and my local credit union processed a $800 cash advance with no fees, while Chase wanted to charge me $10. Also, if you're really desperate and have a trusted friend or family member, you could potentially use the card to send them money through apps like Venmo or PayPal (though check the limits first) and have them give you cash back. It's not ideal but could work in a pinch. The ReliaCard system really needs to be more user-friendly for people who need to access larger amounts for essential expenses like rent.

•This is such great advice! I wish I had known about credit unions being more flexible - that could have saved me a lot of stress today. The Venmo/PayPal idea is really clever too, though I'd be worried about those apps also having daily limits. It's crazy how many hoops we have to jump through just to pay basic expenses like rent when we're already dealing with unemployment. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and workarounds - this thread is going to help so many people who run into the same issue!

Another option that worked for me when I had this exact same issue - try going to different ATMs throughout the day. Some people don't realize that the $1000 ATM limit might reset at different times depending on when you first used it, not necessarily at midnight. I was able to get an extra $400 out by trying an ATM at a different bank around 6pm after hitting my limit that morning. Also, if you have any local check cashing places, they sometimes have higher daily limits for money orders than grocery stores or post offices. It's worth calling around if you're really stuck. The ReliaCard situation is honestly ridiculous - they should have emergency overrides for essential expenses like rent!

•That's really interesting about the ATM limits potentially resetting at different times! I never would have thought to try that. The check cashing place tip is smart too - I'll definitely keep that in mind for the future. You're absolutely right that there should be emergency overrides for essential expenses. It's frustrating enough being unemployed without having to jump through all these hoops just to access your own benefits money when you need it most. Thanks for sharing what worked for you!
