Do you need to pay taxes on Washington ESD unemployment benefits?

I've been getting unemployment benefits from Washington ESD for about 2 months now and just realized I haven't been thinking about taxes at all. My friend mentioned that unemployment is taxable income but I'm not sure if that's true in Washington state. Do I need to worry about owing taxes on my UI benefits when I file next year? Should I be having taxes withheld from my weekly payments or setting money aside? I don't want to get hit with a huge tax bill later.

Yes, unemployment benefits are definitely taxable income at the federal level, regardless of which state you're in. Washington doesn't have state income tax so you don't need to worry about that part, but you'll still owe federal taxes on your UI payments. You can have taxes withheld from your benefits through your Washington ESD account online.

Oh wow I had no idea! How do I set up the withholding through my account?

Go to your SecureAccess Washington account and look for tax withholding options in your benefit settings.

I made this same mistake last year and ended up owing like $800 in taxes that I wasn't prepared for. Definitely set up the withholding now before you get too far behind. The standard federal withholding is 10% I think.

Yikes that's a lot! Did you have to pay penalties too or just the tax amount?

0 coins

Just the tax amount thankfully, but it was still a shock to my budget.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to set up tax withholding, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach ESD agents on the phone. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made it way easier to get my tax withholding sorted out instead of trying to call for hours.

How much does something like that cost? Seems like it might be worth it if it actually works.

They focus on the value of actually reaching someone rather than pricing details. For me it was worth it just to avoid the endless busy signals.

The tax withholding is optional but highly recommended. If you don't do it, you need to set aside about 10-22% of each payment depending on your total income for the year. Unemployment benefits are taxed as ordinary income, so it gets added to whatever other income you have.

So if I made $30k at my job before getting laid off and then get $15k in unemployment, I'd be taxed on the full $45k?

0 coins

Exactly right. The unemployment gets added to your other income for tax purposes.

wait I thought unemployment wasn't taxable because its a government benefit? like food stamps aren't taxable right?

0 coins

Different types of benefits have different tax rules. Unemployment compensation is considered taxable income by the IRS, unlike some other assistance programs.

that's so confusing, wish they made this stuff clearer when you first apply

I'm in the same boat - been on unemployment for 3 months and just found out about the tax thing. Does anyone know if there's a deadline for setting up the withholding or can I do it anytime during my claim?

0 coins

You can set it up anytime during your claim. It will only apply to future payments, not retroactively to payments you already received.

Good to know, thanks! Better late than never I guess.

Update: I tried logging into my Washington ESD account to set up withholding but the website keeps timing out. Anyone else having issues with the site today?

The site has been super slow lately, try early morning like 6-7am when fewer people are online

0 coins

Yeah the ESD website is pretty unreliable, especially during peak hours

This is exactly why services like Claimyr are helpful - when you can't get through online and the phone lines are jammed, having a way to actually talk to an ESD representative makes all the difference for things like tax withholding setup.

I'm usually skeptical of third-party services but honestly the ESD phone system is so broken that I might try it

I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Much better than spending hours on hold just to get disconnected.

Just want to add that if you're doing gig work or part-time work while on unemployment, that income is ALSO taxable and needs to be reported both to ESD and on your tax return. Don't forget about that income when calculating what you might owe.

Good point, I did some freelance work last month that I reported to ESD but didn't think about the tax implications

Finnegan Gunn

Yeah you'll get 1099s for that income in addition to the 1099-G from ESD for your unemployment benefits

Does anyone know if the extra $600 weekly payments from 2020-2021 were taxable too? I'm still sorting out some old tax stuff.

0 coins

Yes, all unemployment compensation including the federal supplements was taxable income. There was a special exclusion for 2020 but that was just for that tax year.

Ugh okay thanks, I was hoping those were exempt

Pro tip: even if you set up withholding, still save a little extra money for taxes just in case. The 10% withholding might not cover everything depending on your total income and tax situation.

How much extra would you recommend saving?

Ashley Simian

Maybe another 5-10% if you can afford it, just to be safe. Better to get a refund than owe money.

The IRS website has a withholding calculator that can help you figure out if the 10% is enough or if you need to save more. It takes into account your other income and deductions.

That's really helpful, I'll check that out. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've been setting aside 15% of each unemployment payment in a separate savings account. Haven't set up official withholding yet but at least I know I'll have money for taxes. Sometimes doing it manually gives you more control.

•

That's smart, I should probably start doing that too. Do you just transfer it right when you get paid?

0 coins

Ella Cofer

•

Yeah, as soon as the money hits my account I transfer the tax portion to savings. That way I'm not tempted to spend it.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD about tax withholding or other account issues, I'll mention Claimyr one more time - it really did help me avoid the phone runaround. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ if you're curious how it works.

I tried it last week and actually got through to someone in like 15 minutes instead of calling for hours. Worth it just for the time savings.

Don't forget you'll get a 1099-G form in January showing how much unemployment you received during the tax year. Keep that for your records and make sure the amount matches what you actually received.

Good reminder! I'll make sure to watch for that in the mail.

You can usually access the 1099-G online through your ESD account too, don't have to wait for the mail

This thread has been super helpful! I had no idea unemployment was taxable and I've been getting benefits for 4 months. Definitely going to set up withholding ASAP and maybe save some extra money too.

Same here, really glad someone asked this question!

Yeah I'm relieved I found out now rather than at tax time next year. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!
