Can't change date on ESD appeal form - error won't let me type anything

I just got disqualified for benefits and tried to file an appeal right away, but I'm running into a weird technical issue. When I get to the appeal form online, there's a field for 'date of determination' that's completely locked - I can't type or change anything in it. I've tried on both my phone and laptop, cleared cache, tried different browsers, nothing works. The form won't let me proceed without this information. Do I actually have to wait until that specific date before I can file my appeal? The deadline is only 30 days and I'm getting nervous about missing it. Has anyone else had this problem with the appeal form? Any workarounds?

Had the same issue last month! So annoying. The date of determination is supposed to be the date on your disqualification letter, not today's date. But the ESD website is super glitchy and sometimes that field gets stuck.

Thanks for replying! The date on my letter is already showing in that field, but it's locked so I can't change it or even confirm it. It won't let me click 'next' either. Did you eventually get yours to work?

You don't need to change the date of determination - that date should be pre-filled with the date ESD made their decision from your disqualification letter. It's locked by design. Are you able to complete the rest of the form? Sometimes there's another error somewhere else that's preventing you from submitting, but the system doesn't tell you clearly what's wrong.

Ahh, that explains it. No, I can't get past this screen at all. There's a red error message saying "Please enter determination date" even though it's already filled in and I can't edit it. So frustrating!

Classic ESD website fail!!! I ran into this EXACT problem when appealing my denial last year. Their website is GARBAGE and hasn't been updated since like 2010!!! The problem is probably that the date format in their system doesn't match what you're trying to enter, or there's some hidden field you're missing. WA state tech is a JOKE!!

This is actually a common issue with the ESD appeal interface. Here's what's happening: the date field is supposed to be pre-filled with your determination date from your disqualification notice, and it's locked by design. The problem is that sometimes the system doesn't properly register that the field is already filled. Try these troubleshooting steps: 1. Make sure you're entering the exact claim ID from your disqualification notice 2. Try using Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer (the ESD site works better with these) 3. Make sure you've completed all other required fields on the page If none of that works, you have three options: 1. Call ESD directly (good luck getting through) 2. File your appeal by mail using the paper form 3. File your appeal by fax if you have access to one Remember, you have 30 days from the date on your determination letter to file, so don't wait too long trying to fix the website issue.

Thank you so much for these detailed suggestions! I've tried steps 1-3 already with no luck. I guess I'll have to do the paper form as a backup. Do you know if I can download that somewhere or do they have to mail it to me?

I had this EXACT same problem two weeks ago! Tried everything to get the online form to work and wasted like 3 days. I finally just gave up and used Claimyr to get through to an actual ESD agent by phone (https://claimyr.com). They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent told me there was a known glitch with the appeal form and helped me file my appeal over the phone instead. Saved me so much stress since I was already at day 20 of my 30-day window!

Oh wow, I didn't know this was a service! I'll check it out. At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything because I really need to get this appeal filed. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, I might have to do that. Do you remember how long the paper appeal took to process compared to the online one?

To answer your question about the paper form - yes, you can download it directly from the ESD website here: https://esd.wa.gov/unemployment/appeals The paper form is actually processed in the same timeframe as the online submissions once they receive it. Make sure you include a copy of your determination letter and send it certified mail so you have proof of when you submitted it. One other thing to note - when you file an appeal, you should continue filing your weekly claims during the entire appeal process. If you win your appeal, you'll only get paid for weeks you properly claimed.

Thank you! I didn't realize I needed to keep filing weekly claims during the appeal. That's super helpful to know. I'll download the form right now and send it certified mail tomorrow.

For those asking if Claimyr works - yes! I was skeptical too but it saved me hours of frustration. The ESD agent I finally talked to said they're getting a lot of reports about the appeal form glitch but their IT team is backed up with other issues. She said they're prioritizing phone appeals right now because of the website problems.

I wish I'd known about this before I spent 2 weeks trying to get through! Definitely saving this info for next time (though hopefully there won't be a next time lol

Just wanted to add that I spoke with an ESD representative last week about a different issue, and they mentioned this appeal form problem is happening because they're in the middle of a system update. Apparently it's affecting about 15% of users trying to file appeals online. They're aware of it but don't have an estimated fix date yet. They recommended either calling in or using the paper form as others have suggested here.

Thanks for the insider info! At least it's good to know it's not just me doing something wrong. I've mailed in the paper form today and will try calling as well.

UPDATE: The same thing is STILL happening in 2025!!! I just tried to help my brother file an appeal and the EXACT SAME error is there. Washington ESD is absolutely INCOMPETENT!!! THREE YEARS and they can't fix a simple form error?? This is why people give up on getting benefits they deserve!!
